Pesticides
Insects are a part of the natural cycle of the planets ecosystems. They are present in every environment on the planet and perform vital functions to the habitats they inhabit. Insects help to aerate the soil, pollinate blooms, decompose dead organisms thus adding minerals and nutrients back into the soil, and even help with controlling the levels of other pests that exist in their individual ecosystem. Unfortunately for humans, many insects can also be very troublesome and invasive to farmer’s crops due to their destructive nature, or toxic to humans by spreading disease.
In efforts to control the damage that these insects do the environment, humans have developed chemicals to kill infestations and the more irksome of insects that can be damaging to the habitats human establish for themselves. Unfortunately these pesticides are sometimes much more damaging to the environment and human life than we understand before it is too late.
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, more commonly known as DDT, was a pesticide first used in 1940’s to help prevent the spread of malaria and typhus as well as other insect spread diseases amongst the military and civilian populations as well as to control the spread of insects in crops, homes, gardens, and other places (EPA). DDT was used as a pesticide for many years until the government started to regulate its use in the 1950’s and 1960’s. As a synthesized toxin, DDT did not break down easily in the environment. DDT does not break down easily and can take up to 15 years to begin to break down. Even when this begins, the resulting chemicals left over are incredibly toxic.
