Chevrolet
Chevrolet Motor Company was founded by Louis Chevrolet and William Durant. Durant was a General Motors founder and was ousted in 1910. At that time he united with Louis Chevrolet. In 1916, Durant purchased a portion of GM and regained the leadership standing once again. At that time he brought Chevrolet Motors into GM as a new division (Chevrolet, 2012).
Building Chevrolet Motors into the large corporation seen today did not come easy nor overnight. Many trials and hurdles were encountered prior to establishing profits. Long-term and short-term goals were developed.
Planning Function of Management
Planning is looking ahead and sketching out future courses of action to be followed. It is a methodical action that determines when, how, and who is going to perform a specific job. This is a comprehensive timetable outlining future courses of action. The managers at Chevrolet have engaged in the basic planning process to ensure that the company remains profitable and a competitor. When a concept is presented, the management team begins to gather, interpret, and summarize the information that pertains to the idea. Part of the process is to study past events, examine current conditions, and forecast future trends. This is known as situational analysis (Bateman & Snell, p. 132, 2009). Included in the analysis is detailed research pertaining to the automobile market such as current trends in automobile buying, what age bracket the new automobile going to target, and current economic conditions such as gas prices. From this analysis management can set specific goals such as an implementation timeline to produce the new automobile.

Legal, Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility
Chevrolet has several internal and external influences that are considered on a day to day basis. Legal issues, ethics, and corporate social responsibility are key factors that are reviewed when determining a course of action.
To minimize legal issues Chevrolet maintains business standards by following government laws and regulations. These can pertain to local, state, and federal laws. Automobile regulations can be obtained in the Federal Vehicle Standards and the National Traffic Safety Association. The standards provide guidelines for automobile makers that must be adhered to or else a company is subject to fines and penalties.
Within the organization, Chevrolet maintains a workplace environment that does not permit discrimination or harassment. Corporate policy and procedures provide guidelines addressing zero tolerance in addition to the outcome should an employee not adhere to the policies.
Ethical responsibility is another key factor Chevrolet takes into account on a daily basis. Chevrolet’s approach to ethical responsibility from top executives to employees who work in the factory is “Winning with Integrity” (Retail Industry, 2012). It is apparent from Chevrolet’s mission statement that ethics contributes to the organization as one of their five basic principles is “Safety and Quality First” (Retail Industry, 2012).
Corporate social responsibility is the obligation toward society assumed by business (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Chevrolet through the GM Foundation helps communities across the United States through investments in Education, Health/Human Services, Environment/Energy and Community Development (Chevrolet, 2012). The organization gives back to the communities.
Chevrolet Factors
There are several factors that influence the company’s strategic, tactical, operational, and contingency planning. Some of these factors are technological, competition, economic, and cultural. Chevrolet to remain competitive and profitable keeps up with technological trends. Over the years, Chevrolet automobiles have kept up with technology. When Chevrolet came out with the first auto it was basic; key to start the engine, window handle to open the window, etc. Over the past several years, technology has changed providing remote key entry, remote engine start, power windows, power locks, and antilock brakes.
They have also kept up with the competition by constructing automobiles with the appearance of elegance often by changing the style (round back versus square) and offering newer colors. The economy over the past years has changed. People at the present time are watching what they spend and are looking for fuel efficient automobiles. Chevrolet, through innovation has created the Chevrolet Volt which is one of 10 models that is fuel efficient.
Through strategic planning, innovation and creativity Chevrolet has built an organization that is profitable. Managers create specific planning steps and go through several decision making stages to ensure that the company goals are attainable.
