During an automobile accident, the body is thrown frontwards and sideward that could cause harm mostly to the chest, abdomen & shoulders. This will of course have an effect on the body and in occasional cases, can cause internal injuries as well such as spinal cord injury (Achildi, et al., 2007), aortic separation, and intra-abdominal trauma such as colon perforation or mesentery rupture; even though they may feel uninjured. There is less likelihood to be seriously injured if a seat belt is being worn than if no seat belt is utilized at all. A common sense approach can lead to a reduction in injuries. Driving safely including the proper use of seatbelts or car seats, removal of plastic bags from young children, teaching swimming and supervision when in water, removal of house hold toxins, fire safety, and use of bicycle helmets are taught in school to kids (HHS). The CDC calls for efforts to reduce injuries by focusing on what term the 3 P’s; education, enforcement, and engineering. Education is used by the schools to teach children basic safety. New parents are often taught the proper way to use child restraint seats in the car. Locally, in my area the state police have no fault safety checks in which your car seat and the use of it can be examined for proper fit. These clinics are conducted in a big box retailer’s parking lot so that all a parent needs to do is drive up. If fault is found in the use of the car safety seat, education is given out rather than a citation. The second E is enforcement. This is been a hot topic that has had a lot of proposals, none of which seemed to be acceptable to Michigan lawmakers until the fate of Michigan motorcyclists was dangling in one man’s hand. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder made the difference when he voted yes to not enforcing motorcyclists to wear helmets. Since this decision there has been a substantial increase in fatalities of the motorcyclists. Michigan no longer requires motorcyclists to wear protective head gear. The new law basically states that if a rider chooses to not wear a helmet you are to have a $20,000 insurance policy that is supposed to cover your medical and other costs, in the event you are injured in an accident without a helmet on. It has been proven time and time again that $20, 000 will not cover even one day in a critical care unit at a local hospital. Michael Dabbs, president of the Brain Injury Association of Michigan, said the $20,000 insurance coverage that riders are required to buy “would probably buy a part of the day in the ER and intensive care and not much more”.
