San Francisco Chinatown after the 1906 earthquake. Before I heard about the San Francisco encountered with the big earthquake and the Chinatown in SF was rebuilt. From the Richard Gonzales works as a writer in National Public Radio news website, in his article, Rebuilding Chinatown After the 1906 Quake, he mentions that, “But no one knows how many people died in the densely packed blocks of Chinatown, with an estimated population of 14,000.Racism against the Chinese was rampant in that age. Chinese immigrants had come to work in the railroads and mines and were widely viewed as a competitive threat to the working class, says California historian Kevin Starr”(Gonzales). 14,000 is a big number in that period because in the 19th century, it’s hard for Chinese people going abroad and working in another …show more content…
The gateway was built in 1970, and carries a quote by Dr. Sun Yat-sen saying, “All under heaven is for the good of the people”(SF ToDo) . From the Chinese meaning to translate these four words, I think that, “天下为公” means that the society if equal for everyone and the common people can live under the fair official society. These four words encourage the official to work harder and deal the things equally for the common people. As we know, Sun Yat-sen is a famous people during China, using his quote as the gateway for San Francisco’s Chinatown, means that he is still respected by others and his words still useful for the Chinese. Not in the 1970, these four words shows up the common people’s wish is that they could be treated equally and they can live well in the peaceful world, but also in the current society, the common people still hope that living in the peaceful world and treated equally by the
