Abstract

The company I chose from the list is the Chipotle Mexican Grill. I chose Chipotle because I admire the company’s code of conduct. In this paper, I will select key areas of Chipotle’s code of conduct that are of significant importance to the business. Next, I will explain the key steps that Chipotle should take to ensure that employees follow the code of conduct. Finally, I will suggest three ways in which Chipotle can engage in socially responsive activities in the community within which it operates.

Describe key areas of the selected company's code of conduct that are of significant importance to the business, and explain why.

Within every company, CEOs take on numerous responsibilities to ensure that their business or company is successful. According to Stever Robbins, “The CEO’s second duty is building culture” (Robbins, 1999). Since many companies embrace diversity, CEOs must ensure that all employees follow and understand the company’s code of conduct which in turn becomes part of the company’s culture. Ethics, values, integrity are usually presented within these codes of conduct. Each section of a company’s code of conduct policy addresses all rules and any issues that an employee may have.

As the CEO of Chipotle Mexican Grill, I take pride in our company’s code of conduct. At Chipotle, our seniors and employees strive to be compliant with our code of conduct policy. There are key areas of Chipotle’s code of conduct that are of significant importance to this business. These areas include professionalism, Chipotle’s Ethics and Conflicts of Interest Policy, ethical communications, outside business activities/investments, electronic communications and information, recording and reporting information, our Anti-Discrimination, Harassment and Sexual Harassment Policy, and compliance with the Code. These are the key areas that make Chipotle successful.
When being involved in a business, it is extremely important to practice professionalism. Professionalism shows character.

Ethical communication states that our employees must not partake in and avoid exaggeration, colorful language, guesswork, and derogatory characterizations of people and their motives. Chipotle’s Ethics and Conflicts of Interest Policy states that employees are expected to use good judgment, adhere to high ethical standards, and avoid situations that create an actual or perceived conflict between your personal interests and those of Chipotle (Code of Conduct, 2010).

The reason professionalism, ethical communication and Chipotle’s Ethics and Conflicts of Interest Policy are important because each employee is a reflection of the company; and we put a lot of trust in our employees to do the right thing, utilize appropriate language, and tell the truth. Outside Business Activities/Investments, Electronic Communications and Information, Recording and Reporting Information is also key for Chipotle.

As an employee, you must not receive compensation from competitors, suppliers, vendors, or business entities with whom you are conducting business on behalf of Chipotle. You must avoid financial involvement, outside employment, or any other business undertaking that is competitive with, or prejudicial to, the best interests of Chipotle. Our records are critical in meeting our financial, legal, and business obligations. Dishonesty or carelessness in recording or reporting information, either inside or outside the Company, is not only strictly prohibited, but could lead to civil and criminal liability for you and for Chipotle (Code of Conduct, 2010). These three key areas are important because they require commitment to the company and involves financial, legal, and business integrity.

The last key areas that is part of our code of conduct is our Anti-Discrimination, Harassment and Sexual Harassment Policy, and Compliance with the Code. At Chipotle’s, we do encourage nor tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment. We strive to make this company a safe and friendly environment for not only our customers, but also our employees. Ultimately, compliance with the code is critical because it shows that the applicant or employee understands the rules and policies within Chipotle.

Explain the key steps that the company should take to ensure that employees follow the code of conduct.

For Chipotle, there are key steps that we should take to ensure that our employees follow the code of conduct. The steps I would utilize are the induction package, one-on-one training, online training courses, company intranet, employee handbook, conduct feedbacks from the employees, and have the employees sign a documentation stating that they understand and comply with the policy.

Induction training is a chance for employers and new employees to review and understand expectations and requirements. With one-on-one training, a business representative could work through the code of conduct and other requirements and expectations with existing employees. With an online training course, codes of conduct can be delivered online in a format that allows staff to work through topics at their own pace. Company intranet provides the code of conduct on the company intranet and allows all staff to access it when they need to. The employee handbook will provide staff easy access to the code of conduct when required. When it comes to understanding the code, conduct feedbacks from your staff to ensure that they understand the code of conduct and what is expected of them. Lastly, ask the staff to sign a document to say that they agree to abide by the code of conduct (Implementing a Code of Conduct, 2014).

Suggest three (3) ways in which the restaurant can engage in socially responsive activities in the community within which it operates.

As a family oriented restaurant, Chipotle strives to support their local community. Our code of conduct states, As concerned and responsible citizens, employees are encouraged to participate in community activities. Chipotle functions as an integral part of the local communities in which we conduct our business operations. Chipotle is keenly aware of the benefits the Company and its employees receive from participating in activities that improve the health, well-being, education, and culture of the community. As partners with our communities, we have a responsibility to support and share in the development of social and civic activities to enhance our quality of life (Implementing a Code of Conduct, 2014).

Three ways Chipotle can engage in socially responsive activities within our communities are by hosting fundraisers for local charities and events, recycling, and volunteering at food banks.

When you look at everything as a whole, Chipotle is a great restaurant that embraces reasonable codes of conduct and community awareness. Chipotle’s code of conduct points out key areas that help this business be successful. In order to have a successful business, there are steps that should be taken to ensure that employees follow the code of conduct. Finally, three ways Chipotle can engage in socially responsive activities within our communities are by hosting fundraisers for local charities and events, recycling, and volunteering at food banks.
