...of music. Little did I know that it would be life-changing. My story begins in 2001. My mother asked if I would be interested in singing. I hadn’t given it much thought. She suggested I join the Phoenix Boys Choir. She explained what it was and how successful it had always been. I decided to try out. When I arrived, I met the conductor in charge of the younger boys. She had me sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” A few moments later the conductor announced that I had passed my audition and would soon be a member of the training choir. I was so thrilled I couldn’t say a word. This would turn out to be one of the most memorable moments of my life. I was going to be a member of the internationally known Phoenix Boys Choir! I moved up through the levels of the choir quickly. Every boy longs to be in the most elite group – the Tour Choir. After two years, I made it. At 11 I had learned more about music than I could possibly have imagined. I learned music theory and how to read music. By the end of seventh grade I had been to Spain, Italy, and France. In Rome we performed at Saint Peter’s Basilica. It was a blessing to be able to sing in such a holy setting. We also sang in the Florence Cathedral. During his endeavor at the church, he experimented with the polychoral style, which had already been a feature of the works of earlier Venetian composers, Andrea Gabrieli, his uncle, being one of the composers. The cathedral was massive in size; the architecture of the building gave way for the stereo effect that Gabrieli experimented with. this was because of the huge balconies on both sides of the church. Gabrieli wrote a large number of pieces for cori spezzati, broken choirs, each having a call and effect type between the two choirs, and joining together during the climatic part. his most famous piece was written in 1597, gathering both choirs and instrumentalist to perform what we know as the Sacrae Symphoniae (sacred symphony), this which included the famous Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Pian’e Forte was the first piece in its time to specify the dynamics the composer wanted. The 1597 Sacrae Symphoniae is Gabrieli’s best work that represents his earlier works of music as the organist of the Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, his job that he held from 1585 until his death in 1612. “Gabrieli’s years at the great Byzantine basilica coincided with the most brilliant period of its instrumental ensemble”. Cardiff's "Forty Part Motet" won the National Gallery of Canada's Millennium Prize in 2001. This installation was a reworking of the renaissance choral music "Spem in Alium" by the English composer Thomas Tallis (1514 - 1585) the 40-part choir was designed to mark the 40th birthday of Queen Elizabeth I. The forty voices are grouped into eight choirs of five voices. Each voice was recorded separately and is played back through 40 separate single loudspeakers. My sophomore year we went to Orlando Florida, and my senior year we went to New York City. While both trips were fun, the Florida trip was more focused on the competition and the New York trip was more sightseeing. To raise money for the trips, we had to do many fundraisers. These fundraisers included That’s my Pan, where you can choose what kind of pan you want, the color of the lid and also the design and saying on the lid. There is also personalized utensils you can get and cutting boards. We also sold pizzas, candy, chocolate, and cookie dough. We also had a car wash to raise money. On the Florida trip it was nice to have more freedom to go where we wanted to go. During that week, we stayed at one of the hotels on Disney world grounds so we were able to get up when we wanted and take a bus to which resort we wanted to go explore. During the Florida trip, we spent most of our time at the resorts but we slept in when we could. When we went to each of the resorts, to be safe we had to be in a group of three or four people. ...Prior to joining the RHS Orchestra and Choir, my musicianship was rudimentary. I was not self-reliant in my performances and found myself almost always following others, lacking confidence in myself. I enjoyed playing with others, but everything changed when I came to Reading High. One of my first classes in tenth grade included Orchestra/Choir. I remember distinctly walking into Mr.Richards office. The minute I realized I was the only second violin, I chose to sit in the back by myself as far from Mr.Richards as possible. I was afraid of making a mistake in the midst of a class filled with upperclassmen, and I kept to myself. I did not want to be noticed, especially being surrounded by violinists and cellists who played much better than I did. Naturally, I also struggled with singing out in choir rehearsal when I knew the notes fairly well because of this fear of making a mistake or being wrong. ...The Concert Environment: The National Lutheran choir’s performance is located in a church setting. There are statues and trees that give a very nice background. The choir, as well as the conductor, is dressed in black robes. The Mormon Tabernacle choir’s performance also seems to be in a church setting. The choir is dressed in white and the people playing instruments, as well as the conductor, are wearing black. The Marine Band’s performance is set in a high school gym. There are tables behind them to reflect the sound toward the audience. The whole band, including the conductor, is dressed in their marine uniforms. The Music, the composition I liked best: Personally, I enjoyed the National Lutheran choir’s playing of “Salvation is Created” the most. I liked this piece the best because I felt like it was done the best of the three. I felt very calm and relaxed while listening to this piece. It sets a very peaceful and relaxing mood. ...The performance was put on by the gospel choir of NCSU, and they were accompanied by a keyboardist, two guitarists, and a drummer. The lead guitarist was a good player, as well as the keyboard player (I hope to be there one day). Early on the audience section wasn't very full, but as things began to get started some late comers filtered in. The choir director encouraged the audience to participate in the performance rather than simply being spectators. I really enjoyed the performance having grown up going to churches that sing gospel music. It was also fun to see some of my fellow students displaying their talents, and to see the audience members stand and enjoy the show as well.
