...Throughout history there have been leaders and famous people for that matter that have been looked at as leaders. A leader is someone who people choose to follow and influences others to do things that they may not otherwise do. Ideally one would expect the effective leader to be a person of integrity. But is that really always the case? There are five different leadership styles that would apply to leaders of yesterday as well as today. The first theory would be the trait theory. An example of a leader that falls into the trait theory would be motivational speaker Tony Robins, because he has charisma. The attributes that give off his persona of charisma is his magnetic personality, paired with superb communication skills. His approach to this is pulling people in with his smile. When he takes the floor, people listen. He proves to have the magnetic personality as he speaks people attract to him as if they were metal being drawn to the magnet. Of the five leadership styles, the trait theory is more salient for Tony Robbins because with the charisma the he exudes it does not matter. For example the type of behavior he presents good or bad for that matter gets over looked once he begins to speak. He takes on the Autocratic approach as what he “preaches” is the belief that he expects his listeners to take on. That is the right way and the only way it should be done. Ronald Reagan “the people’s president,” would be an example of the contingency theory. He would be categorized...

Management Leadership

...lead by attending classes, workshops, and seminars. Some companies offer tutorials on leadership skills for management because not all managers are leaders. Leaders, on the other hand are naturally born with the gift, they are creative and able to lead, guide and encourage people to do well. Leaders may also be an asset to the organization and in life by nature. Leaders can also help an individual or a group to overcome their fears, or whatever obstacle they may face, leaders also provide creative incentives and motivational opportunities to encourage. Not all leaders are managers; most leaders who have a positive attitude and an inner determination to know how things can be done this person happen to be excellent managing a group. A leader’s role in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational structure is to motivate the group to work together to produce an outcome of progress. A leader creates an incentive that can give each follower a reason to want to do well. This gives an individual something to look forward to. Some of the incentives a leader uses to motivate are: a week to wear jeans if the group or individual completes an assignment before its deadline or maybe the one that does not miss any days of work for the month will receive a free dinner. If a leader can do or say something to help an individual resolve an issue, then the management team can also allows one to keep believing in what it takes...

Mya Angelou: Becoming An Effective Leader

...When you learn, teach- Mya Angelou… Most of my youth and young adult years I spent struggling with accepting the label of leader, or teacher, or even mediator. I imagine two possible reasons why standing in this light is such a challenge. Part of the reason could come from societies dictation that minimizing one's greatness is a desirable sign of humility, especially for women. A more introspective response would say that I was/am simply afraid to accept that I have been gifted with the ability to lead, guide, and nurture others for fear of being misunderstood and rejected. In the past 4 years, I have grown to accept and appreciate my innate ability to relate to and lead diverse groups of individuals in various capacities. When fate and timing...

New Age Spirituality

...called occultism (Martin, 1989, pg. 14-15). We will see that this spirituality movement is merely a clever attempt made by depraved mankind in his ongoing quest to be his own God. I will examine the opinions of scholars and come to the conclusion that the New Age Religion is actually the Old Religion repackaged. This paper will show that the New Age Religion leads to an unfulfilled life in contrast to Christianity which leads to eternal life. The New Age Spiritualism worldview is a hodgepodge of beliefs that combines many beliefs together into a sweet, appetizing, appealing sounding religion. But drinking from this “fountain” is detrimental to the soul. A little bit of cyanide in the Kool-Aid will kill (Martin, 1989, pg. 52). Cult leader, Jim Jones, was heavily influenced by New Age spiritualism. As a result of this, 915 people died in Jonestown, Guyana at his indirect hands in a standoff between authorities and his New Age cult group (Martin, 1989, pg. 47) According to Jeremiah, the New Age Spiritualism is growing faster than most religions of today (Jeremiah, 1995, pg. 18). It is the oldest form of religious cultism today and is equally as dangerous (Martin, 1977, pg. 199). Involvement in spiritualism will certainly bring the judgment of God upon those who delve into it (Martin,...

...Jaries Thomas Dr. Forrest-Carter ENG 3302-01 05 December 2011 The Research Essay Commencing in 1837, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established to serve the educational needs of African Americans. Cheney University of Pennsylvania marked the beginning of educational opportunities for blacks. Prior to the time of their establishment, and for many years afterwards, blacks were generally denied admission to predominately white institutions (PWI). As a result, HBCUs became the principle means for providing postsecondary education to black Americans. In an address made by former U.S. President George Bush, he stated: “At a time when many schools barred their doors to black Americans, these colleges offered the best, and often the only, opportunity for a higher education” (“HBCUs and Higher Education Desegregation”). Historically Black Colleges and Universities provide valuable educational opportunities for African Americans. Although there have been continual controversies concerning the place and role of these institutions within the larger framework of higher education, over the years changes have occurred in the functions and perceptions of these establishments (Roebuck and Mury 1). In Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965, Congress officially defined an HBCU as an institution whose principal mission was and is the education of black Americans (“About HBCUs”). Even after the abolition of slavery in 1865, the African American population...

...country in Africa. He endured more than 27 years in jail for trying to overthrow a white police state, becoming the world's most famous political prisoner. He led voteless black South Africans from the racist apartheid period into a democratic era in 1994. (Apartheid is an Afrikaans word meaning apartness or separateness. It is a system of segregation based on race that favors whites and restricts blacks to labor reserves.) Celebrated as an international hero upon his release from prison in 1990, Mandela will be remembered as one of the twentieth century's towering leaders. Mandela will also be remembered as the precedent-setting African head of state who announced his retirement at the peak of his power after only one five-year term in office. By retiring, he passed "the baton" to a new generation, leaving behind a reputation untarnished by corruption and brutality that besmirched so many long-term African leaders. More than anyone else, Mandela bridged African and European cultures--taking the best from each. He was an educated man, a lawyer, a democrat, a shrewd observer of human behavior, a conservative politician who led a military uprising against an inhuman system, a best-selling and wealthy author, a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, a connoisseur of food, and a president daring enough to wear colorful, dashing shirts rather than stuffy suits and ties.
