In Defense of Identity Politics
The article "in defense of identity politics" was written by Christine Emba. It is about "Identity Politics," and was written a month after the 2016 Presidential election. She begins with the idea that Hilary Clinton lost the presidential election because the democrats spent too much time focusing on getting votes from 'interest groups," i.e. “women, minorities, and LGBT, voters.” (Emba, Christine.) She mentions that white nationalists are fed up with these interest groups and their “identity politics.” She then suggests a solution, to abandon appeals to identity and focus on a larger vision, values that all American's can agree on.” “Rather than thinking about things that might divide us, let's join hands and proclaim that All Identities Matter -- or …show more content…
She then goes on to say, “many on the left are still trying to figure out how Hilary could have lost to Donald Trump.” Mentioning that the “United States grows more diverse and its citizens grow more vocal” (Emba, Christine), also builds credibility because the author uses an idea that everyone knows and therefore will agree with. She builds trust by mentioning that “the cycle of grief has moved from denial to anger,” (Emba, Christine). So, she is appealing to democrats and people who do not like our selfish politicians by hinting at not liking them herself.
She uses pathos, emotion and imagination, by giving the audience emotional definitions. She chose to use African-American and freedom in the same sentence, which makes the reader immediately think of how difficult times were for African-Americans and what they have gone through to get to today. “If African-Americas find it disproportionately difficult to take advantage of liberal promises of life, freedom and economic opportunity because of their identity, it stands to reason that identity remains a concern.” (Emba,
