Christopher Chavez is 17 years old male adolescent on the precipice of his 18th birthday and High School graduation. His father was born in Mexico while his mother was born in Calexico, California the border town of Mexicali, Baja California. At the time of his birth he was the youngest and only child of his father and the youngest second child of his mother. The siblings shared a nine-year age difference. His parents never married and went on to separate four years after his birth. He was raised by his single mother with help from relatives. His father went on to marry and have a second son three years later. When he would visit his father or paternal grandmother sporadically he was considered the oldest sibling. These stages start from the day the child is born through into adulthood. The sensorimotor stage begins at birth and lasts through 24 months of age. When the infant has reached 24 months they proceed into the pre-operational stage, which is from 24 months old through the age of 7. When the child reaches the age of 7, they enter the concrete operational stage, which continues until the age of 11 years old. When a child hits the age of adolescence, they reach the final stage of development, known as the formal operational stage, this spans through adolescence onto …show more content…
This stage of development also includes two substages. The first substage of preoperational thinking is Preoperational Phase which occurs from 2 to 4 years the child, at this stage the child engages in symbolic play (McLeod, 2014). For example, Christopher had a rubber sword he would flare around claiming to be a Pirate. At this stage the child also exhibits egocentrism and centration where the child tends to only focus on one aspect of a situation or problem or object (McLeod, 2014). When Christopher was a child he loved juice and would always demand more, in order to limit his daily juice intake and appease him we made a habit of serving him juice in a smaller kids cup, in his mind he only focused on the fullness of his cup in comparison to the larger cups the adults drank from and he believed he was getting more juice than anyone else this is example of centration. The second substage of preoperational thinking is the intuitive Phase which spans from age 4-7 years, in this phase children are speech becomes more social and less egocentric and the concepts they form are rudimentary and unalterable (Cobb, 2010).
