Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to see what colors are used in our food. With this experiment we are able to use salt solvent to identify what colors are used in different dyes.
Procedure:
1. Gather paper, dyes and pencil. 2. Mark a baseline and 1.5cm dividers and label the colors between the lines. 3. Use the toothpick to put on the color. 4. Mix salt and water and stir until dissolved. 5. Put water and salt mixture in a dish and make sure that the water is not touching the baseline. 6. Let the paper sit in the water until it gets wet 2cm from the top. 7. Take the paper out and measure the distance of the color from the baseline. 8. Record the measurements in data tables and calculate Rf using the formula.

A.What might happen you used a pen to mark the baseline on the chromatography paper?

The pen might mix with the colors B.What would happen if you did not stop the chromatograph before the solvent reached the top of the paper?

Because color continues advancing while the paper is drying

Conclusion: In this lab exercise I have learned how different colors are used to from different dyes on our food. I have learned how to use chorography to see what color samples match in food dyes that we eat in our candy.

Make one dot with each marker on each piece of chromatography paper along the line traced around the center, as illustrated on the board. 6. Use pencil to label these dots with the color and “P” for permanent. 7. Remove the papers from the solvents when the solvent has moved to within 2 cm of the edge of the paper....
