Project Title: Green Computing Research Project
Project Start Date: October 18, 2011 Projected Finish Date: April 20, 2012
Budget Information: The firm has allocated $500,000 for this project. The majority of costs for this project will be both internal resources and external resources (if needed) providing the skill sets needed to provide expertise in green computing solutions.
Project Manager: Greg Smith (757) 713-4425, gregosmith@myemail.com
Project Objectives: Develop an effective solution in providing more cost effective, energy efficient means of producing computer products and meeting the energy needs of the data center in an effort to reduce the energy cost. Find ways to reduce data storage issues by considering cloud computing to reduce costs in additional storage hardware and labor hours required to maintain physical data storage usage. External consultants will be utilized as subject matter experts in green computing contributing ideas in the initial planning and development stage in assisting in providing technological concepts used to facilitate a green computing environment. The company will also consult with members of the Green Grid in providing green technology solutions to datacenters.” As business demands increase, so does the number of data center facilities which house a rising amount of powerful IT equipment. Data center managers around the world are running into resource limits related to power, cooling, and space, making the resource efficiency of data centers an important topic of discussion.”(Unknown, 2011) With the assistance of the Green Grid, We Are Big, Inc hopes to find green computing solutions for data storage, cooling, and finding effective energy cost solutions. Research data on effective green computing solutions by other companies and measure the effectiveness of cost of energy and virtualized data storage within their IT infrastructure. Find ways to integrate thin client computers within the network to provide a centralized processing and storage solution requiring less decentralized hard drive maintenance for each computer on the network reducing administrative and technical support costs needed to maintain those hard drives.
Main Project Success Criteria: Project should pay for itself within the first 6 months after completion providing energy cost savings for data centers.
Approach:
* Perform research and trend analysis on energy consumption for all datacenters through energy bills received within the last year to be used as a baseline. * Determine what information technology appliances (both hardware and software) offer reduced energy consumption and cooling requirements. * Research thin client hardware and determine whether centralized data storage using cloud computing is better suited for the company. * Research cloud computing and examine how security and protection of data will affect the company, both from a technology and legal standpoint. * Report energy cost savings to senior management to justify implementing green technology solutions to the company.

In a global, technologically driven society, however, the very idea of time has changed. Having once implied a spanning space between the hours of “nine to five” relative to the person or organization from whose vantage money was viewed, time is now irrespective of person, organization, or location; it is, literally, “24/7.” With this shift in perception, organizations, especially, have taken on the greater challenge of ensuring efficiency in their operations, allowing their customers the freedom and peace of mind to have access to the products or services they purchased without interruption. Working behind the scenes, as it were, are the IT companies that make the realization of this freedom and peace of mind possible. In the scenario with Fiction Corporation, it is quite evident that the role of IT is paramount to the success of the business, in general, and to the company’s decision to- move, in particular.
