Interoperability of OSPF
OSPF offers all the functionality of RIP, plus: * Variable-length subnet mask (VLSM) support * Routing updates without the 30-second "hold-down" period required by RIP * Bandwidth optimization including less frequent routing updates and a choice of metrics for defining the best links between routers * Up to 255 routed segments between routers * Packet authentication of routing updates with both simple password and MD5 authentication * OSPF can effectively support much larger networks. * OSPF autonomous system has been correctly divided into multiple areas, OSPF updates create much less overall burden on network performance. * OSPF supports variable-length subnet masks that recognize subnets of any size.

How migrating EIGRP to OSPF
1) Design the OSPF network, like how to divide the areas, what’s the routing policy.
2) Configure OSPF routing protocol on the EIGRP network, make the precedence of OSPF lower than precedence of EIGRP, then put the interfaces into OSPF areas.
3) Complete the configuration followed the second step, because the precedence of EIGRP is higher than OSPF, so only the EIGRP learned routes show up on routing table, OSPF learned routes do not show up on the routing table. So OSPF does not work at this time around.
4) After making sure everything is fine, changes the precedence of EIGRP and OSPF, and makes the precedence of EIGRP lower than OSPF. Because the precedence of OSPF is higher than EIGRP, so the routing table change to OSPF learned routes, EIGRP learned route will disappear, and OSPF will be the working routing protocol.
5) After having made sure the OSPF routing table is perfect, we can delete the EIGRP configuration, and change the precedence of OSPF back to default value. After have done that, the migration is completed.

Given the criticality of the data, these networks are typically constructed with a high degree of redundancy. While such redundancy is desirable, its effectiveness is dependant upon the ability of individual network devices to quickly detect failures and reroute traffic to an alternate path. This detection is now typically accomplished via hardware detection mechanisms. However, the signals from these mechanisms are not always conveyed directly to the upper protocol layers.
