If America hadn’t had divided itself, than would The Civil War have even occurred. The Civil war was a time when America was divided into the North and the South. The Missouri Compromise stated that for every free state, there must be slave state. After The Missouri Compromise was made official, America started to divide itself. The Civil War was caused by many economic, political, and social reasons such as how the North and South relied on each other for supplies, the growth of slavery and how the people viewed it, and how slavery was treated in the South. First, the North and South relied on each other frequently for supplies. Both sides traded supplies to frequently that their economy was based on their trades. The South did many things to improve the way slavery was viewed so that it would improve. Many slave owners lied about slavery and how the slaves are treated. In a book written by George Fitzhugh it stated that “The Negro slaves of the South are the happiest, and, in some sense, the freest people in the world.” (George Fitzhugh, Doc 1). George Fitzhugh advertised slaves as the freest and happiest people in the world. Negro slaves had to work 24/7 in the scorching heat everyday with no breaks, food, or water. The master’s would take advantage of the women and would blame the abuse on the husband. Fitzhugh lied to get citizens to become pro-slavery. The South portrayed slavery as the start of civilization. In a review about a debate in Virginia, Thomas Dew stated that Virginia would be nothing without slavery. Thomas Dew believes that since the South wouldn’t survive without slavery, it shouldn’t be taken away. The Missouri Compromise states that for every free state, there is a slave state. The problem was there was more room for free states since everything above the border is free. The South realized that the North had more so they expanded slavery western.
