Letter from Birgmingham

...makes use of logos throughout his letter. He clarifies all of the reasons for his opinions and supports them well. His points of view are also logical in their appeal. For example, in the beginning of his letter he gives a response to the clergymen’s claim that the demonstrations were risky and early. He states that the Negro community had no substitute except to prepare for direct action. He supports this claim by saying that the Negro leaders wanted to negotiate with the city fathers, but they consistently refused to engage in good-faith negotiation. He also gives more support to his argument by writing about another confrontation in September when the Negro leaders finally got their chance to talk with the leaders of Birmingham. He states that in the course of negotiations certain promises were made by the merchants-for example to remove the stores’ humiliating racial sings. On the source of these promises, the Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and the selected of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights agreed to a halt on all demonstrations. As the weeks and the months went on, they realized that they were the victims of false promises, because the signs went back up. Due to the reality that their hopes were yet again blasted they were forced to resort to direct action. This is just one illustration of many others in which Martin Luther King makes excellent appeals to logos. Martin Luther King channels a high sense of ethos in his letter. He establishes this from the...

Letter from Birmingham Jail

...Nick Genaris Professor Ngoh Protest Literature 21th October 2015 Letter from Birmingham Jail-Rhetorical Analysis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” in order to address the biggest issue in Birmingham and the United States at the time (racism) and to also address the critics he received from the clergymen. The letter discusses the great injustices happening toward the Black community in Birmingham and although it is primarily aimed at the clergymen King writes the letter for all to read. In his “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” Martin Luther King Jr. uses logos, alliteration/repetition, and ethos to back up his belief that nonviolent protesting and disobedience is the most effective means to protest anything that needs to be changed, in this case segregation. After reading King’s letter I, and almost anyone, would come to the conclusion that King is deeply motivated to help against any injustice in the US. Who else would go to such lengths if they didn’t? He knows how persuasive he can be by using his knowledge of the English language, and he uses this to speak out against people who doubt him (clergymen) and to incite a different way of thinking into the people in hopes of change. Dr. King’s letter is extremely effective because it provides an enormous amount of evidence to the reader that he and his company are being treated unjustly and also that King truly cares about making a change for the good of the city. It also re-directs attention...

So the letter was made for everyone, which is a pretty big audience, King just wanted people know what he was truly feeling during his time in his jail cell. Rhetorical Analysis: “Dear A.I.G. I Quit”

...what was best for the country. The government bailed out many companies and it was then up to the companies to make ethical choices on how they pulled their company back up. A.I.G., an American insurance corporation, is a prime example where the taxpayers provided money in government support to A.I.G. and the corporation used a large percent of the money towards employee treatment. Many employees in the company were both positively and negatively affected and one in particular, Jake DeSantis vice-president of AIG’s financial products unit, took action in his op-ed titled, “Dear A.I.G., I Quit.” DeSantis’ open-letter is a letter of resignation to the company he was employed for, AIG. Through his letter DeSantis claims that, AIG should not be penalizing the employees who had nothing to do with bringing down AIG and that anyone who was not involved with Credit Default Swaps should be entitled to the bonuses that they had been promised thorough a contract. In the first three paragraphs DeSantis begins by stating his resignation and the main reason for why he is resigning. Throughout the next couple of paragraphs DeSantis provides the readers of the New York Times with his reasons to why he is resigning. In the beginning portion of the body of his open-letter DeSantis explains that when he first started at the company eleven years...

Bg vs. Lc

...Bank guarantee Vs Letter Of Credit A bank guarantee and a letter of credit are similar in many ways but they're two different things. The main difference between these two credit security instruments is the position of the bank relative to the buyer and seller of a good, service or basket of goods or services in the event that the buyer defaults. These financial instruments are often used in trade financing when suppliers, or vendors, are purchasing and selling goods to and from overseas customers with whom they don't have established business relationships. A bank guarantee is a guarantee made by a bank on behalf of a customer (usually an established corporate customer) in case it fails to deliver the payment, essentially making the bank a co-signer for one of its customer's purchases. A guarantee is a written contract stating that in the event that the borrower is unable or unwilling to pay its debt to a merchant, the bank will act as a guarantor and step in to pay that debt. The initial claim is still settled primarily against the bank's client, and not the bank itself. This is a type of contingent guarantee. A bank guarantee is more risky for the merchant and less risky for the bank. But this is not the case with a letter of credit. While a letter of credit is similar, the principal difference is that it is a potential claim against the bank, rather than a bank's client. For example, a seller may request that a buyer be provided with a letter of credit, which must...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Martin Luther King's Letter From Birmingham Jail

...In “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr. King uses a variety rhetorical devices in order to counter claims made by the clergymen who wrote him a letter while he was in jail. The purpose of King’s letter was to defend not only his actions but the actions of other fellow African Americans. According to Dr. King, Birmingham was the most segregated city in the south. Blacks were forced to adhere to laws that would be considered inhumane and unlawful in modern times. The continuation of these laws caused King to eventually turn his focus towards Birmingham. His method of non-violent direct action landed him in jail numerous times. After receiving the letter from the clergymen he decided to write his own letter in response to theirs. Throughout the letter there are many examples of pathos, logos, and allusion that are used to advance his argument. Dr. King was able to effectively use pathos in order to pull out sympathy from its reader. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, the African American race faced many political and social injustices that hindered their progression in society. Groups such as the KKK caused African Americans to operate in fear. In order to make his audience feel the pain that African Americans went through, in...

Summary Of Martin Luther King Jr Letter From Birmingham Jail

...referenced by many political leaders to remind people of what the United States can be with peace between citizens. Another widely known project by Martin Luther King Jr. is the “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Martin Luther King Jr. created this letter to respond to a public statement of concern by eight clergymen of the South. Dr King’s intentions were to defend the strategy of the nonviolent resistance to racism. Although some of his arguments fail, overall Dr. King provides valid arguments to these criticisms that use logic and credibility. In his letter, Dr. King. begins by stating that he does not usually address criticisms but he will answer to them because of their seemingly genuine intentions. Dr. King immediately makes it his duty to attack the notion that he and his associates should be considered “outsiders.” The clergyman state, “However, we are now confronted by a series of demonstrations by some of our Negro citizens, directed and led in part by outsiders” (Public Statement by eight Alabama clergyman 1). Dr. King establishes credibility to this opposition that he is indeed not an “outsider” by mentioning that he serves as the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and he also includes that, “We have some eighty-five affiliated organizations all across the South” (Letter from Birmingham 1). He states that his purpose in Birmingham is because of his...

Letter From Birmingham Jail By Martin Luther King Jr.

...MLK Argument Essay Lubna Al Sindy Period 5 4/26/17 Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” on April 16, 1963 in order to respond and address the judgements made by the white clergymen. In his letter, Martin Luther King, Jr. claims that privileged groups are unlikely to give up their privileges voluntarily. He also argues the concept of mob mentality and how groups tend to become more immoral than individuals. I agree with MLKs’ claim because if privileged groups gave up their privileges voluntarily, a revolution would not be necessary. If that had been the case, privileged groups would have given up their privileges without the need of MLKs’ actions. The fact that MLK had to...
