How Does Sociology Help Us to Understand 'Class' as an Important Social Phenomenon?

...How does sociology help us to understand 'class' as an important social phenomenon? Sociology emerged in the nineteenth century as an attempt to understand the transition from traditional to modern society.  Many argue that class is no longer important as a social phenomenon as an individual’s identity are based more on status and cultural factors such as lifestyle, values, intelligence, education. Others argue that class is still a central influence on people’s lives, that it affects their life chances. They argue that class inequality exists and that such inequalities are widening rather than narrowing. The major perspectives historically have been Marx and Weber who have provided their views and support for the idea that society is class-conscious. Other theorists, such as Clark and Lipset challenge Marx and Weber theory and believe that class is not an important social phenomenon. The common stratum model of class divides society into a simple hierarchy of working class, middle class and upper class. Class is an important social phenomenon that exists in society and through sociology we are presented with a variety of concepts and theories that contribute and support our understanding of the classes.  A class system “refers to a social group, defined in terms of its economic position in a hierarchy of inequality and with material interests that differentiate it from other classes.” (Van Kriken; Habibis; Smith; Hutchins; Martin; Maton, 2014, P.205).  The most common...

The Help: Chapter 1

...The Help: Chapter 1 Set in Mississippi in the early 1960′s, “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett is told from three alternating viewpoints. One narrator is Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a progressive young college graduate from an upper middle-class, white family who dreams of becoming a writer. Another narrator is Aibileen, a middle-aged African American woman who has been a maid her whole life and who has raised no less than 17 white children in the process. The last narrator is Minny, another African American maid in her thirties. Minny is Aibileen’s best friend, despite the fact that the two women could not be more different. All three women narrate around the same event: the publishing of Skeeter’s novel about working for white women. The story commences in August of 1962 in the kitchen of Elizabeth Leefolt. Aibileen is caring for Leefolt’s plump, two-year-old, Mae Mobley Leefolt, whom she calls Baby Girl. Aibileen's own son, Treelore, was killed months before she began working at the Leefolt residence. Treelore fell from a loading dock and was crushed under a tractor trailer. When the story opens it is the fourth Wednesday of the month, bridge club day, and Aibileen straightens up the house, manages Baby Girl, serves the women food, and overhears their conversation. The women discuss the upcoming Junior League Benefit, and Miss Hilly tells the women present, Elizabeth, Skeeter, and Hilly's mother, Miss Walter, about the Home Help Sanitation Initiative, a bill that requires a separate...

Help

...they were charged with feeding, rearing and caring for their children. Theirs is an American story that is rarely told on any grand, meaningful scale—not one, at least, that defies stereotype and caricature. But recently, “The Help,” a film based on Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling book of the same name, became a cultural touchstone when two of its lead characters, both African-American maids in the then-staunchly segregated Mississippi, challenged viewers to walk their journey—to see, as lead protagonist, Abileen Clark, said, “what it felt like to be me.” To me, ‘The Help’ is this year’s most outstanding and socially relevant motion picture; Viola Davis’ quiet but powerful portrayal of Abileen made us all take notice of a historically invisible class of women and Abileen’s story, along with those of the other maids who rallied with her to tell it, remind us that when we speak, if only in a whisper, momentous things can happen. Of course, the movie, does not come without its controversy: while so many, myself included, questioned then embraced Stockett’s story and actresses Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer earned Academy Award nominations for their roles as the maids who conspired with a young white woman to canonize their life stories, others question why, 70 years after Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar for her portrayal as the affable, sassy slave maid Mammy in Gone With the Wind, Hollywood ushered to the screen a movie feting the Jim Crow subjugation of black women. What is lost...

...and why it would be worth your time and resources. Find two concepts in your text that relate to the change/improvement you envision and use those within your answer. Highlight your terms/concepts with bold or highlighter. Your answer must be at least 250 words. I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My family still lives there I just decided to move away from home for a couple years but will be returning next spring. Unfortunately in Milwaukee the crime rate and poverty has increased over the years. Every morning once you turn the television on the news is talking about the three murders the evening before. With the increase of crime I would like to see more organizations and people within the community coming together to help focus on those who are less fortunate. I believe this would lower crime rates and homelessness significantly. I care about Milwaukee very much, I was raised here and I hate to overhear other conversations amongst people how scary Milwaukee is, because I just don’t see it that way. In addition I am well aware of the potential Milwaukee has; events like Summerfest and Wisconsin State fair bring outsiders into the city representing Milwaukee. I would like to see more organizations like Hope’s Chest where individuals are coming together to sort out donated items to be resold at very affordable prices. If the people of Milwaukee who are struggling are able to purchase what they need at very low prices there would be no need for crime and people...

...possesses and one has to be fair and righteous to be considered a good and effective leader. A true leader sets examples for his followers to follow. He does not tell his followers how to do things but tells them what to do and let them do it with the best of their ability. Leadership is an individual influencing a group to reach a certain goal. I discovered my ability to lead others when I was in my finance class. Being an accounting student, I am required to have some knowledge of finance. Before the semester started I heard from my senior friends that it’s a very hard class. Even after working hard students end up with ‘B’ grade. Still I took the class and after working hard I end up with “A” grade . I realized after studying the material first then student have a idea what to study and what not, so student end up doing bad because when they study the material for the first time they don’t give their full attention. So after the first test most of the students drop the class. One day in the class I asked one of my classmates if she interested to do group study for this class. She agreed to it because she failed in the first test. After that we started meeting with each other once in a week and before any test if it’s possible for both of us we try to meet twice. Before the discussion day I study the materials by myself, then on the discussion day I lead the play. I make her do the problems and with her I also do the same...

Online Learning

...challenge one of my classmates and motivate them through a class or two. Some of the challenges that I will face with online learning is being disciplined enough to make time out for studying and homework. My week is packed with working, volunteering and going to the gym/yoga. I know I will have some slip ups every now and then, but setting time aside for my school work is going to be on my priority list now. Another challenge for me is that I’m use to being in a traditional classroom setting and having the teacher readily available if I need assistance or have questions. I have always been the “hands on” type for learning, so not having a teacher there will be a small challenge; I know if I had any questions then I could email my instructor and they would get back with me. The first important thing I learned in this orientation that will help me succeed in my future courses is that even though this is an online school, I have plenty of resources provided to me by Ashford, such as the writing center and the library, to help me get through each course. The second thing I learned, which is not so much a learning experience, is that there are so many people that have chosen to take a step towards taking their education to the next level. We all come from different walks of life: some of us have jobs, some of us are stay at home parents, some of us are full time students. Regardless of where we come from, we can all help each other along our educational journey. I know I will be...

The volunteer sight I went to was called Love Inc. and the Inc stands for In the Name of Christ. I was blessed to have found a volunteer service in my own community in Pullman MI. I had heard of it before and had driven pass there many times but never stopped. When I went I met some really important people who also work and volunteer there. The Coordinator was named Ann Hatfield. Prior to me going there I had called and explained to her what I needed and she immediately said YES and welcomed me to come. She is a special lady because she does her best to help anyone who calls or stops by for help even if they are not from the community and are in need they don’t turn them away. Love Inc is an organization that provides food, clothing, personal items, prayer ministry, and utility assistance, limited referrals to home repairs, Life Skills training and some other services as well. | Ann got started at Love Inc by volunteering herself for a few years before she became employed there. ...while overcoming or minimizing our weaknesses. Finally, understand how you learn things best your learning style and try and find classes and study methods that best utilize the way you learn. My first step, I want to say that we should utilize every Class. This step is not just about attending every class, though attendance is the foundation of it. Not only must you attend every class session, but you should do so with a strategy to succeed. First, you should sit toward the front of the class, because sit the front of the class make you concentrate, I think most people want to playing computer, phone, or sleeping who sit back of the class. Second, you should get actively involved in the class. This is a good way to remember the knowledge in class, So you don't have to do a hard review before the test. Finally, if you're going to make the effort to attend class, do so with the primary goal of learning which means don't be distracted reading other materials, texting, surfing the Net on your laptop, or talking to the student next to you. My second step, take a great notes. I think great notes is really important, great notes can make us getting a good grade. It's not enough to attend and be actively involved in every class, you need to also listen carefully and take detailed notes. Obviously you need to listen to take great notes, but there's more to listening than just taking notes. Many professors provide pretty strong clues...

Dealing with Neighborhood Preservation

...Preservation This all started when one day coming home from our capstone class there was a piece of paper taped to the front door. The piece of paper was from the Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation/Code Enforcement Division. It stated they were conducting inspections in our area and that our property was found to be in violation. The violations were for chipped and peeling paint on the exterior trim of the house. If the violations were not corrected within thirty days then there is the possibility of being fined up to $2,500.00. Upon receiving this, I began to develop a step by step procedure to help resolve the issue, since most of my time was already being spent on work for our capstone class. The first step was to call and talk to the Code Enforcement Inspector. This step took almost a week to complete because we ended up playing phone tag with each other. Once we were finally able to catch each other, I was able to ask a few questions concerning the violations, time frame for completion, and to notify them of my school situation on the chance that we could work something out. It just so happened that the inspector understood and we were able to stretch the completion date as long as I stayed in contact with them and updated them on my progress. The next step I took was to recruit some help from school, which ended up being my capstone group. Now, after getting the recruited help, next was to schedule...

Online Learning Versus Traditional Learning

...Whether its working or raising a family, its hard to get to a traditional class on time versus getting on your computer at midnight and doing your course work. Some people think that there is too much time being spent on electronics as it is due to the fact that it runs their lives. But without electronics, where would we be now? We couldn’t track space shuttles or satellites without the help of computers. Computers have come along way since the 50’s. They are more advanced than they were back then. Another good thing about online learning versus traditional classroom learning is that you can study at your own leisure and at your own pace. You can’t do that in a traditional classroom learning setting. People without hectic lives prefer the traditional classroom learning so they can get the help from the teacher on a one on one level and be able to turn in assignments to a person not through a computer. They prefer more structured settings and being able to ask for help from fellow students also on a one on one level. I’ve done both, and I prefer the online learning due to more time to do assignments at my own pace and I don’t feel rushed. I felt rushed in a classroom setting. With online learning, you don’t have to worry about carrying books from class to class everyday. Most books are online now for online learning. People who do classroom learning have to carry books from class to class everyday. I think in time they will get tired of carrying those books...
