When looking at the past few weeks of my fieldwork in Academy of Accelerated Learning, there have been several instances where I have seen culture take a prominent role in the classroom. There is one instance in particular that was striking that I will be narrating and discussing in this paper.
Before I discuss the nature of what happened, I would like to discuss the demographics of the classroom. The room that I am in is a 1st grade classroom with about 32 students. This is a diverse classroom with about half of the students being Caucasian, ¼ being Asian or Mung, ⅛ being Hispanic, and there are only 3 African American students. There are a handful of ELL students in the classroom who come from refugee camps and barely speak English. …show more content…
I am only in my first round of fieldwork and I have already learned a lot about what I would change if I was in this teacher’s position and what I would keep the same. I am going to be discussing several comments that were addressed to me and one instance in particular that was very unsettling. I am going to reflect on this instance and hopefully shed some light on culture and identity along the way.
Last week on Valentine’s Day, the children were extremely energetic and talkative. From the moment I entered the classroom I could tell that the teacher was not enthusiastic and did not want to be teaching. “Teachers hate Valentine’s Day, or any holiday for that matter. I can guarantee that the kids are going to be off the walls crazy today. Trust me when I say that you are going to hate these days,” my teacher said to me. After the day was finished and I had gone home, I had been thinking about the comment the teacher had made for quite some time. I realized that my teacher resembles a lot of aspects in Ms. Nicholi from Marsh’s The Shaping of Ms. Nicholi: the Discursive Fashioning of Teacher Identities. In this article, Marsh reflects on Ms. Nicholi’s teachings and refers back to a discourse of normalization and how Ms. Nicholi’s identity shifted along in her career. “Recall that initially Ms. Nicholi had attempted to position herself as a learner-centered teacher who valued freedom and choice for the children in her care. As she worked with the children, however, she found that they did not possess the ways of thinking, speaking, and acting that would be considered “normal” within the discourse of normalization and deemed them “developmentally unready” to handle the type of teaching that she offered. In response to the children, Ms. Nicholi’s identity shifted as she became a much more teacher-directed authoritarian force in the classroom. Since none of the children met the criteria of the “ideal kindergartner,” a hierarchy of deficits emerged as children’s identities were shaped in relation to Ms. Nicholi and one another. ...Classroom Observation: Practicum/Field Experience Reflection When doing my observation hours for this class I went to a local elementary school in Frederick County where I live. The elementary school is called Waverly Elementary and while there I observed the ELL teacher Mrs. Megan Taylor. In Mrs. Taylor’s class there were 4 students each day that I observed. While there I noticed a lot of SEI strategies and accommodations that were used. From the time that I walked into the classroom I noticed some SEI strategies that were being used. When Mr. Taylor started teaching her lesson she always reviewed what they had learned the day before. Once they were done reviewing from the day before it led into what they were going to be doing for that day. As she taught her lesson she always referred back to what was already taught to the students. There were also many accommodations that were used in the lessons that I observed. One thing that I noticed was that if they were having trouble saying it in English she would say the word in Spanish. When this was done the students better understood what word was trying to be said. One thing that they did was use note cards to learn the words for the lesson. None of the options I felt were going to be one hundred percent fool proof so I decided to stick with my original plan and for the majority of the students it seemed to work out fine. ...My chosen career is to become a Social Worker dealing with kids and their families. I have so much love for kids that I just want to see smiles on their faces. I want to start as a Social Worker and work my way up to become a Child Protective Specialist. ...Reflection While completing my observing and participation hours I got the chance to observe and participate in three different classes. The first classroom I had the chance to be a part of was Mr. Ruttlers classroom. Mr. Ruttlers classroom was children of seventh and eighth grade. The students in the classroom had moderate disability, majority of the students had autism or ADHD. The second classroom I was able to observe  and participate was in Ms.Barberro classroom. No matter what academic level each student who walks into my classroom is at, learning cannot take place unless I first establish a positive learning environment.
