Mechanics of Machines

Project 1

Introduction The clutch is simply the connection between the engine and transmission. In a vehicle with a manual transmission you need a clutch because the engine spins all the time and the car wheels don't. In order for a car to stop without causing the engine to die, the wheels need to be disconnected from the engine somehow. That's where the clutch comes in! It allows for a gradual application of engine rpms to the transmission input shaft. It also allows for an interruption of power to help shift gears without grinding.

Diaphragm Clutch

How a clutch engages and releases

When the clutch pedal is pressed, a cable or hydraulic piston pushes on the release fork, which presses the throw-out bearing against the middle of the diaphragm spring. As the middle of the diaphragm spring is pushed in, a series of pins near the outside of the spring causes the spring to pull the pressure plate away from the clutch disc (see below). This releases the clutch from the spinning engine.

Note the springs in the clutch plate. These springs help to isolate the transmission from the shock of the clutch engaging.

Parts of a Clutch

1 Clutch Disc: The disc is the assembly that helps dampen the the engagement of the engine to the transmission and as well as to connect the engine to the transmission. The centre of the disc or hub has springs that absorb the shock when you release your clutch pedal. The outside diameter of the disc is where the friction material is. This is the material that is clamped between the pressure plate and flywheel. It is also the material that wears out.

2 Pressure Plate: This component is also known as the Clutch Cover. This is the spring-loaded surface that clamps down on the clutch disc.

3 Release Bearing: Commonly referred to as the "Throw-out Bearing" Is designed to push against the fingers of the pressure plate to release the pressure on the clutch disc.

4 Pilot Bearing/Bushing: Centres the transmission input shaft and helps with support (many vehicles do not have this bearing/bushing).

The above are the four main components in a clutch,
These parts make up almost any friction clutch and many variations of each part exist
All the various parts range in price and different combinations may be used depending on the job of the clutch and the load it has to carry.

...speed and will never slip. * Dog clutches are used where slip is undesirable and/or the clutch is not used to control torque. Without slippage, dog clutches are not affected by wear in the same way that friction clutches are. * Dog clutches are used inside manual automotive transmissions to lock different gears to the rotating input and output shafts. A synchromesharrangement ensures smooth engagement by matching the shaft speeds before the dog clutch is allowed to engage. Friction Clutch: * A clutch is a mechanical device that provides for the transmission of power (and therefore usually motion) from one component (the driving member) to another (the driven member) when engaged, but can be disengaged. * The vast majority of clutches ultimately rely on frictional forces for their operation. The purpose of friction clutches is to connect a moving member to another that is moving at a different speed or stationary, often to synchronise the speeds, and/or to transmit power. Usually as little slippage (difference in speeds) as possible between the two members is desired. Cone Clutch: * A cone clutch serves the same purpose as a disk or plate clutch. However, instead of mating two spinning disks, the cone clutch uses two conical surfaces to transmit torque by friction. * The cone clutch transfers a higher torque than plate or disk clutches of the same size due to the wedging action and increased surface area. Cone clutches are generally now only used in low...

Robinson Case Analysis

...Dana parts to purchase sprag clutches for the helicopters that robinson manufactures with a specified design and hardness. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved design specification for Robinson’s helicopters required sprag clutches of a level of hardness described as “50/55 Rockwell.” Dana initially supplied parts for Robinson that complied with the design specifications. But after 12 years of continuous supply, between July 1996 and October 1997 Dana Corp manufactured and delivered clutches with a higher level of hardness namely “61/63 Rockwell” [ (Robinson Helicopter Company, INC., V. Dana Corporation, 2004) ]. During this period Dana corp did not notify Robinson corp about the changes in design specification and did not obtain the necessary certifications. During the 15-month period, Dana continued to deliver its sprag clutches to Robinson and provided a written certificate of compliance with contract specifications with each shipment. The 61/63 Rockwell sprag clutches with a higher level of hardness suffered a higher level of failure compared to the conforming parts (50/55 Rockwell) [ (Robinson Helicopter Company, INC., V. Dana Corporation, 2004) ]. Moreover Dana did not inform about the change in parts until three months after Robinson notified Dana about the high rate of clutches failure. As a result of these events Robinson was required by FAA and its British counterpart to recall and replace non conforming sprag clutches. Upon the completion of recall...

Jonathan Alter's Framing The Poor

...Do you know what it is like to be poor? The world often demonizes the poor for being too lazy and unmotivated. That assumption is often very wrong, people in poverty try their hardest to escape but it is often too hard. But what if I told you it was actually our fault, Society as a whole could be doing more to help the poor. It is society’s responsibility to help those in poverty escape its clutches. In their paper Framing the Poor, Max and Frank discuss the prominence of the pessimistic view towards the poor in recent years. They discuss Ronald Reagan and a strategy of his campaign, where he would talk about Linda Taylor, “The Welfare Queen”. She was a highly skilled con artist, who had 80 fake names and made $150,000 in illicit welfare (Max and Frank). Linda Taylor doesn't make a good name for the poor, many people despised her for cheating the system for her income while others had to actually work. However Taylor is an extreme case, and it is only probable that she had this big of a con. Taylor still became a media sensation, with many people believing that she represented the poor. This lead to a harsh attitude to the poor and the belief that they were lazy and living off welfare...

The magnitude of this force depends on the roughness of surfaces. In engineering applications friction is desirable and undesirable. We can walk on the ground because of friction. Friction is useful in power transmission by belts. It is useful in appliances like brakes, bolts, screw jack, etc. It is undesirable in bearing and moving machine parts where it results in loss of energy and, thereby, reduces efficiency of the machine. In this unit, you will study screw jack, clutches and different type of bearings. 51 Theory of Machines Objectives After studying this unit, you should be able to      know application of friction force, know theory background of screw jack, know different type of bearings, analyse bearings, and know function...

The Role Of Religion In Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass

...Along the Mason-Dixon Line, separating Pennsylvania and Maryland, lay a very big difference for African-Americans in America during the 19th century. From Pennsylvania to Maine, African-Americans were free from the harsh clutches of slavery. But from Maryland to Texas, Southerners owned slaves by the hundreds. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery and spent 20 years working for various slave owners. In “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” written by Douglass himself, the brutal conditions of slavery as well as Douglass’s character and the role of religion are all shown from what Douglass experienced while he was a slave. The conditions for all the slaves in the South were very similar. Most slaves were given the same allowances once a year. Like the...

...Mercedes Benz AMG Mercedes Benz is an amazing car brand with great horse power and a beautiful look. The brand offers different styles of cars from Sedans to SUVS and sports cars. One of the nicer versions is the C63 AMG. Three important aspects of the car are the Engine, the Transmission, and the LED headlights. This essay will explain the features of each and why the features make the AMG a great car. The Engine of the AMG is very important for the car’s function and drive. The 4.0-liter V-8 biturbo engine of the AMG is the first sports car engine in the world which has the turbos inside the V of the engine. (AMG Driving Performance , 2015). It also has dry sump lubrication, which is “a lubricating motor oil management method for four-stroke and large two-stroke piston internal combustion engines that uses additional pumps and a secondary reservoir for oil—as compared to a conventional wet sump system, which uses only the main sump below the engine and a single pump.” (Dry Sump , 2015). This makes the engine more efficient because of the prevention oil-starvation at high g loads, and because their lower center of gravity positively affects performance. (Dry Sump , 2015). The head of engine design at AMG stated: “With the new AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, we present a fascinating and powerful sports car engine, which also achieves the next step in efficiency due to numerous measures.” (Mercedes Benz, 2014). The advantages of the engine are that the eight-cylinder engine...

The Right to Work

...Islam and Human Rights Course Islam and Terrorism April 2016 Introduction: Terrorism has become one of the outstanding features that marked the twenty-first century, as its acts and threats have been in existence for millennia, and because it acts as a real danger facing the human existence. Terrorists have widened their activities and increased their practices in many regions of the world in recent times, such as Turkey, France and Belgium. Terrorist groups have used violence as a mean to achieve their goals and they did not adhere to any religious principles or moral, and they have showed us how they have used advanced weapons and equipment’s in their attacks. The core principle of terrorists is that the aims justify the means, which carries with it the destruction of human civilizations. Muslims are being exposed by campaigns of slander and distortion, waged by western countries, politicians and media, and these campaigns have seen an increase of ferocity after the emergence of the (ISIS) terrorist group in the Arab countries, and specially after the terrorist attacks on some Western countries. Some Arab and Islamic countries participated in awareness campaigns about the thought of the new emerged terrorist group (ISIS) extremist on the Islamic religion, but violence and extremism is no longer mentioned in Western countries, but they became attributed to Muslims, Arabs.
