As a solution, they had to be attached the helicopter to the tower for 50 minutes, even though this task was supposed to take 12 minutes. ...Architecture The Daniels & Fisher Tower in Denver, Colorado is 5 Elements of Architecture The Daniels & Fisher Tower uses five of the ten elements of architecture to create quite a notable building. These five elements are expressed in the buildings materials, the architect’s use of lines and repetition, how the building balances astatically, and the tower’s scale. Material This tower is constructed on top of a 24 foot thick concrete base. The tower is erected by a steel skeleton and is faced with “blond brick and creamy terra-cotta”. This healthy base and firm skeleton contribute to the firmness of this building. The four faces of the tower have Seth Thomas clocks, all with arms measuring six feet long. There is, finally, a 2.5 ton bell in the top two stories of the tower. Line As with any tower, the majority of the lines draw the audience’s eyes up from the bottom to the top. The majority of the tower’s lines are vertical, with a subtle horizontal contrast from the lines of windows on the faces. Just below the clock, the architect constructed a prominate horizontal line. This horizontal line appears due to an observation deck like platform. This floor only stops the vertical sides of the building for only 2 or 3 stories before another horizontal line. These two parallel horizontal lines create a box-like shape that dramatically stopping the eye’s move upward to draw attention to the ornamentation of this part of the tower. Above this block, is a smaller square...

Personal Narrative: I Love C. N. Tower

...I love the C.N. Tower. One reason is I am from Toronto, and I have been up it about twenty times, although it is still fun every time. I find it very cool that this famous tower is in the same city as I was born in, also it is amazing that I can go so high and see so far across my home town. Almost all of my families have been up the tower, and I find that cool because I can talk about it with them when I see them. Every time I go back to Toronto, I always have the C.N. Tower in mind. Every time I fly into Toronto and I can see what was once the world’s tallest tower, looming over the clouds, on top of the world, like it is welcoming me back, that makes me feel at home. And the day when I get to go up the tower is a remarkable experience....

Future plans – The kingdom Tower in Saudi (1km into the sky) Building potential: Space elevator, new arising problems, strength of materials, what that would mean and enable if possible. Throughout history, progression and advancement in technology has fundamentally separated us from our evolutionary antecedents, enabling a life of greater comfort, extravagance and an increased ability to procreate and sustain ourselves. This improvement is especially apparent in the world of architecture and civil engineering, where there has been an unremitting ambition to surpass the existing boundaries, particularly with regards to height. The most renowned early example of a structure where height was key are the Pyramids of Giza where elevation was crucial in order to radiate power and divine authority. The tallest pyramid, standing at 146.5m, was built more than 4500 years ago, and remained the tallest manmade structure for the next 3800 years, until the 1300s when Lincoln Cathedral was built topping it by only 13.5m [1][2]. Following this, a series of cathedrals and churches continued to break and set new records [2]. The Eiffel tower was the next long term record holder, at a height of 300m, holding the record for the tallest structure up to 1930 when the Chrysler Building exceeded it by 19m [3][4]. Remember 3 Examples of Paraphrasing Here is a sample paraphrase: Paraphrase: How much higher skyscrapers of the future will rise than worlds tallest building, the Sears Tower, is unknown. The design of one twice as tall is already on the boards, and an architect, Robert Sobel, thinks we currently have sufficient know-how to build a skyscraper with over 500 stories (Bachman 15). Note the following. The writer never uses the exact words of the author therefore there is no need to use quotation marks. The writer summarizes, uses his or her own words and then cites the source at the end. Sometimes a paraphrase will be large and must be broken up. A good rule of thumb is to break up a paragraph that is completely paraphrased into two or three citations. The writer has given credit to the author and thus has avoided plagiarism. Now the author would just continue writing after double spacing. 4 Original Text: (From Ron Bachman, "Reaching for the Sky." Dial (May 1990): 15.) What Are the Key Aspects in the Construction and Design of the Burj Dubai Tower?

...The main reason The Burj Dubai tower works and allows its occupants to be comfortable lies in its structural design to deal with the main problems such as the wind load, the physical strength of the building and of course the elevator design needed for such a large structure. The Burj Dubai, situated in Dubai, will soon be the tallest building in the world, bypassing the previous record holder, the Taipei 101 by almost 290 metres giving it an astonishing 800 metre height. With over 2700 feet, designing and constructing such a vast building has given significant challenges to engineers and designers alike. Since the building can hold up to 35,000 people at once, it is essential that it is strong, comfortable and able to move people up and down it at a steady rate. This essay will explore how the designers and engineers went about solving these issues. One of the key problems the engineers had to overcome was effect of the wind load and how it would affect the building motions due to the extraordinary height of the tower. Wind load is something that must be taken into account for all buildings, but obviously the wind velocity increases the higher you go and since the structure is over 800 metres tall, there is guaranteed to be a large wind force acting on the building. Three different engineering firms: Skidmore, Owings and Merrill who were all working on the project, hired the RWDI (Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc.) a wind and environmental engineering firm to conduct wind studies...

Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture

...Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture You may not be able to name them all, but most people have at least heard of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Here’s a list with links: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria . Of the seven, only the Pyramid remains, the rest we know of only through historic documents.[1] There have been other “7 Wonders” lists and in 2007, the Swiss government sponsored a project to create a new list, with selections made by popular vote. Over 100 million votes were cast, and the new 7 Wonders were announced as follows: Chichen Itza (the Yucatan, Mexico pyramid), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil’s enormous statue of Jesus), Colosseum (Rome’s arena of Gladiators),Great Wall of China (you can see it from space!),Machu Picchu (ancient city built on an unbelievably high mountain top in Peru),Petra (Jordan’s city cut directly into the side of a stone mountain ),and the Taj Mahal (India’s majestic temple/mausoleum).[2] But my final Cyber Journey of the semester started not as a stroll through history, but as a trip into the future of arts and Architecture with a look at another “7 Wonders” list – The 7 New Wonders of the 21st Century [3], as selected by Architecture, an online review published by the website Quazen. The Transcendece of Art in "Sailing to Byzantium"

...to Byzantium” William Butler Yeats was an Irish poet, dramatist and author born in Dublin in 1865. As he lived during a period of political, economic and even social turmoil, his poetic style went through five periods that adapted to the current situation not only in Ireland, but all over Europe. Yeats’ special interest in the Celtic Revival Movement led him to become one of the founding members of the National Theatre of Ireland in 1904, which became the flagship for Irish playwrights and actors. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature “for his always inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation”. “Sailing to Byzantium,” written in 1926 and included in the collection The Tower, can be interpreted both as a journey taken by the speaker’s aged soul and as the process of transcendence of his own mortality by means of art. “Sailing to Byzantium,” consisting of a four eight-line stanza poem, is metered in iambic pentameter with two trios of alternating rhyme followed by a couplet. Having neither characters nor plot “Sailing to Byzantium” refers to the agony of old age and the work required to remain a vital individual. Byzantium is mainly a trading city: a center of power, knowledge and art, where “monuments of unageing intellect” (8) can be found. In the speaker’s view, Byzantium is “no country for old man” (1), but a city crowded by younger generations. Yeats thinks of aged men as “paltry thing[s]” (9) and “tattered...

...Looking for shelter I arrived at night, when it was raining. The street was empty; there was not a carriage or light in site. Looking for some shelter I jumped down off my pure black horse and tied it up to the nearest tree and then I started to walk towards the black and rusty gate. I heard a thunder storm heading towards me, so I opened the gate in a hurry. As I did I heard a big long creek. I continued to walk down the muddy and wet path and I saw black crows circling the towers roof tops. I got to the old rotten door and knocked; there was no answer. So I pushed the ancient and rotten door and it swung open. I stepped in side. When I stepped in and a horrible stench came roaring down towards me, I called out “hello” and the only response was the echo of my voice. I started to walk towards the dining area, but on the way I heard a loud bang in a near by corridor. It sounded like something had fallen and smashed then I knew I was not alone. The corridor was completely dark so I collected some dry wood form a near by staircase that had collapsed for a torch, I used what I learnt on the farm to light it. I started to creep towards the corridor with my torch the in my hand, the entrance was made of stone and the half open door that was barely hang on to its hinges looked like it was staring right at me, but I pushed on. As I stepped into the corridor a shiver went down my spine, something was telling me that it wasn’t a good Idea. But something else was louring me in....

Logistic Control Tower

...Project : Logistics Control Tower Objective: To design a Logistics Control Tower Solution for E-Commerce Companies Write-up: A control tower is a single command centre for visibility, decision-making, and action, based on real-time data. It’s a powerful cloud service providing a comprehensive unified prospective of your business; top-down to bottom-up. Cross functional team can now rely on a single product to plan, monitor and respond to all business challenges (in this case all issues occur in logistics) quickly, collaboratively enabling you to measure the impact of changes, study response scenario, recalibrate strategies and envision what’s coming down the road, allowing you to see and know it all at the same time. With the help of control tower, Company (and supply chain) will come to be recognized not as a collection of separate functions but as a system in which the flows of information, materials, manpower, capital equipment, and money setup forces that determine the basic tendencies towards growth, fluctuation, and decline. A Supply Chain Control Tower system includes a dedicated team of people responsible for monitoring the alerts of the tower and for taking action when the tower predicts an incident may happen or if an incident already happened. This designated team is delegated the authority to make real time decisions based on the alerts and recommendations reported by the Control Tower. One day a scout drone comes to earth from one of humanities spaceships. This robot is named EVE. It is on a mission to find life on earth. WALL-E falls in love with EVE. Soon eve finds a plant that WALL-E had stored in his home. EVE then returns to the spaceship, with WALL-E following her. Hijinks ensure, and humanity is eventually led back to earth with the help of WALL-E. They then begin to repopulate earth. However, if you look underneath the 'cute' layer, you will find many references to religious stories. The two I am going to discuss are the tower of Babel and Noah's arc. To begin with, I will note the similarities with the 'Noah's arc' story. I am sure you will be familiar with the story, so here is an outline. God tells Noah that the world will flood for 40 days and nights, and that he should build a large boat and round up two of every animal to survive the flood. Noah does so, and then after he is finished, the world floods, from a lot of rain. After 40 days, the rain stops. So Noah send out a dove, which is called 'eve' in some stories, to retrieve a twig from dry land. After it returns, Noah determines that the earth is livable again, and begins to repopulate earth. The movie WALL-E has many similarities with this story. First of all is 'god', being the company 'buy n large'...

Quinceanera

...Quinceanera It is customary for all Latin American cultures to celebrate a coming of age party for their daughters called a quinceanera. Parents commemorate their beloved daughter’s transition from being a little girl to becoming a fifteen year old young lady by inviting family and friends to join in this huge event. A modern day young lady is celebrated with a ceremony, grand party with extravagant decorations, exquisite food, memorable toasts form the godparents, and usually wrapped up with a funky dance. Every little girl awaits the day when she will be treated and given the attention of a princess for a day. It was my pleasure to attend my cousin Daira’s quinceanera, and witness my first quinceanera in Mexico. It was a Saturday afternoon in Tijuana, Mexico as I arrived at the church. The streets were extremely narrow and they had cars parked on either side - trucks, vans, cars – making it nearly impossible for moving vehicles to run past each other. As I drove up I could not help but notice how all the buildings were built so close together, it was difficult to see where each building began. Once I paid closer attention to the houses I noticed the obvious iron gates which bordered each individual home. The buildings were poorly painted a peachy pink color it seemed as if we were in the middle of a rundown apartment complex because of how dirty each building seemed. Through the gates you could see people carrying on their normal daily routine in their homes like little...

A Leap of Life

...for many years and has been done for recreation as well as religious and traditional purposes. There are many different parts to bungee jumping then many people know. Bungee jumping can be fun but dangerous if the jumper is not careful. Bungee jumping originated in the Pentecost Islands in the New Hebrides where men of a native tribe proved their manhood and to ensure a good yam harvest by jumping off a bamboo tower, which was 25 meters high, with a vine tied to their feet. The more modern bungee jumping originated in New Zealand in the late 80s, when jumpers used a rubber rope. This began in April 1979 when four people bungee jumped off the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England, but bungee jumping became famous by A.J. Hackett, who jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. His jump was on TV channels all over the world. As a result, became popular France, and eventually spread to other European countries, and is now a worldwide sport. It is also said that it originated from New Guinea. Men leaped from very tall wooden towers attached to the tower by vines tied to their ankles, it was originally used as a test of courage but has since been converted into a recreational activity and is seen to be a once in a lifetime thrilling experience. The sport is simple yet exciting; jumping from a tall platform i.e. a bridge or a crane whilst attached to a length of elastic chord. A lot of calculations must be done before a bungee jump to ensure the safety of the jumper...
