With this informative speech being the second speech I have given in this class, I would have to say that it was a little jumbled compared to my narrative. I was very apprehensive about this speech and I feel that came out through my speaking. I was very confident about the topic I was speaking on, but I feel the broadness of the topic threw me off a little bit. Overall, I am satisfied with my speech but know I have some weaknesses to work on. But besides the weaknesses, I was happy with some of my strengths in my speech. In the beginning of my speech, I feel I did a good job starting off with a couple interesting facts and emphasizing a pause between the two. I know we talked about the importance of pauses in speeches, which I felt I did a good job with last time, so I tried to following actions from the last speech. Along with the pauses, I feel that I had a decent amount of voice inflection through my speech. I did tend to stumble a few times throughout my speech, but I thought I did an ok job changing the tone of my voice. Also, I feel that my movement went alright through the speech. I did begin to shift my weight when I would stumble on a sentence or point, but otherwise I did attempt to move after my intro and body. Lastly, I think I did a good job of using proper hand gestures. At times I would keep my hands close to my body when I sharing my aunts story, but when I began to talk about the actual topic I began to use my hands more to emphasize points I was saying. So overall, I feel I had some good strengths in my informative speech. Even though I did have some positive aspects of my speech, I also had some negatives points. I do feel that this speech was worse than my last because I felt the need to focus on more things I needed to work on, so I became very nervous which was apparent through my speaking. I think that because I was so nervous going into this speech, it definitely through me off a majority of the time. One negative aspect of my speech was when I unknowingly paused for about five seconds. I think because there was so much running through my head that I got too ahead of myself and forgot what I was talking about. That was definitely one thing I noticed right away that wasn’t good. Another difficulty I had in this speech was the multiple sources I had to cite. I am not used to orally citing information, and I know out of my three sources I forgot to cite one. So that kind of upset me. Overall, I think my nerves took over my body during my informative speech, which caused me to have some difficulties. So now I know some things I need to work on for my persuasive speech. In the end, I think I did an ok job on my informative speech. I definitely had some good qualities presented in my speech with some flaws here and there. I felt worse about my speech right after I presented it than when I watched it partially because I don’t think it was as bad as I felt it was. I know I still have things I need to work on for next time and I will just have to try harder when practicing those for the next speech.

Personal Narrative: My CNA/Phlebotomy

...Remember all the times as a child when someone asked you "What do you want to be when you grow up?" My response had always been the same, a doctor. My CNA/Phlebotomy class made me wonder if that's what I really wanted. I started to question the one thing that had never changed in my life. I walked into class, talked to my friends for a few minutes, then sat down and waited on class to start. I was always anxious to know what tasks we would be performing that day. The bell rang, and as soon as it did, my teacher stood up from behind her desk with the biggest smile on her face. She cleared her throat and said "You guys get to watch a woman give birth today!" Everyone got so excited. I was relieved when she told us that it was just a movie and it wasn't live. As I was watching a woman give birth, all I could think about was how exciting it would be to deliever babies. That thought cleared my mind a few seconds later. The doctors cut the umbilical cord and delievered the placenta. I immediatly felt dizzy, so I put my head down on the table. Apparantly I had fainted because I woke up and I couldn't see anything, but I could hear everything going on around me. I started to panic. My teacher already had cold wash rags laying all over my body by the time I had woke up. Once I had come to realization of what had just happened, I started to think....

Moreover, the mode of address in this film is indirect to the audience which was used the third person angle to encode the meaning to the audience. On the other hand, I choose this movie because of few reasons. Firstly, I love the main character- Zac Efron very much. He has acted in many teenage romance films before, for instance, High School Musical 1, 2 and3. After I watched the High School Musical, I admire his out-looking and his acting skills. Therefore, I choose this film. Besides, the narrative of this movie is very special, which is a non-linear structure and always include some flashback scenes. Firstly, I am going to analyzing the narrative structure of this text. As Todorov mentioned; narrative structure can be divided into 5 parts, which are equilibrium, disequilibrium conflict, recognition of disequilibrium, attempt to...

Movie Critic Review of Crash

...Crash: Of Racial Discrimination and Stereotypes November 3rd, 2011 Crash: Of Racial Discrimination and Stereotypes Directed by Paul Haggis and produced in 2004, Crash was the Oscar Awards winner of Best Picture in 2006. Aside from Best Picture, the movie won only one other award: Best Original Screenplay for Paul Haggis and Robert Moresco. Despite its little recognition, Crash is an important movie to watch. The movie is essentially about racial discrimination and the consequences of stereotyping people. Set in LA, the story covers a 24-hour period. The movie depicts the stories of several people whose lives are intertwined by accidental and casual encounters, usually on the streets. The characters in the story are people of varying ethnic groups: a bad and a good cop, a group of police investigators, a couple of teenage robbers, a DA and his wife, an Arab family, a Hispanic locksmith and his family, and an affluent African American movie director and his wife. The story revolves around how all of these people have deeply ingrained prejudices and how they themselves could suffer from discrimination. ...This excerpt from Nabokov's Pnin focuses on the main character Pnin and how he is obsessed about his health and assumes every worst possibilities that could happen to him. In this extract Pnin is in a station waiting to board a bus to Cremona. Due to circumstances he has to leave his bag in the station and board the bus and that's when he starts getting paranoid and anxious that something is happening to him and he thinks to himself that it's because he left his bag in the station and something bad is going to happen to him. So he stops the bus, gets his refund and lands in the middle of a strange town and starts thinking more about why he is feeling the way he is. He manages to pull out all sort of discomfort he is feeling at that moment and questions everything he did the day earlier. It seems like this story was written from the viewpoint of Pnin's Physician and he knows that Pnin has always had the tendency to over think every situation that comes his way and has a way to make it look bad, like it's written in the excerpt, “...That the repulsive automation he lodged had developed consciousness of its own”. Pnin has also kept track of and noted down the date of all those time he got the same anxious feeling and he's very specific about it. He seem like a very fidgety and a nervous person as a whole. Compare and Contrast the Secret Life of Walter Mitty and I’m Going

...“The Gift of the Magi” Milton Wiscovitch Jr. ENG 125 Prof. Jennifer Chunn November 26, 2012 Theme and Narrative Elements of “The Gift of the Magi” O Henry’s short story written in 1906 “The Gift of the Magi” identifies the theme elements as poverty and love. The lack of money and living in a poor neighborhood affected both Della and Jim. They expressed their unconditional love for each other by sacrificing their most prized possessions in order to buy a Christmas gift. Through this act of love both Della and Jim saw how much they really loved each other by wanting to make their partner happy. This short story identifies that love has no boundaries over having money through self sacrifice when it comes to giving all you have for the one you love. The couple sacrificed items that brought them joy such as Della’s hair and Jim’s watch which was important to the both of them but wasn’t worth much financially (Clugston, 2010). The plot’s analysis centers around the initial situation which states that Della only has $1.87 to purchase her husband Jim a gift on Christmas Eve. Both Della and Jim are poor and love her husband more than in the whole world. Della’s long hair and Jim’s gold watch were the only things they had and gave them up for one another. In the conflict, Della sells her hair to get the money in order to purchase her husband Jim a gift. This solves the problem of not having enough money and later she finds the perfect present for her husband. This opposes...

The Role of Sound in the Thin Red Line

...The Role of Sound in The Thin Red Line Terrence Malick attempts to recreate a part of the war in the pacific on screen through the use of a variety of techniques in The Thin Red Line (1998). One of the most prevalent of these techniques is the use of sound in the movie. Unlike the majority of war movies this movie doesn’t feature a soundtrack that glorifies the battle scenes. The presence of periodic narration and a focus on natural sounds like wind and water moving across the landscape also set this film apart. These audio features combine flawlessly with video to create a very deep and seemingly realistic depiction of the horrors of war. There is little, if any, soundtrack in the intense scenes of battle. This stands out in contrast to the blockbuster action flicks that portray intense action as thrilling and exciting with high tempo musical scores. By creating this contrast with typical action movies Malick lets the audience know that this movie should not go down the same way as the latest Rambo movie does. When a musical soundtrack is present it is often sad and low or it is associated with the environment of the film, such as native islanders singing or sticks drumming against one another. The toned-down soundtrack gives the movie a more authentic feel. The musical soundtrack is most lighthearted when Pvt. Witt is with the natives, separated from the army and civilization. Malick also uses the soundtrack to highlight shifts in emotional scenes. An excellent example...

Saving Nea

...Saving Nea In the short fictional story, “Saving Sourdi,” author May-lee Chai focuses on the bond and relationship between two sisters, Nea and Sourdi. Nea, the younger sibling in “Saving Sourdi,” looks up and admires her older sister, Sourdi. As the two sisters grow in age, Nea isn’t ready to face reality and watch her older sibling start a life without her. Throughout the story, Nea makes desperate attempts to “save” her older sister. In reality, Nea is the character in the story that needs to be “saved”, rather than her sister. Nea, the protagonist and major character in “Saving Sourdi,” is immature and dramatic. At the age of eleven, Nea stabs a man at the restaurant, after hearing him call Sourdi a “China doll.” While Sourdi manages to remain calm during this event, Nea reacts without thinking of the consequences. Toward the end of the story, Nea calls Duke and tells him that her sister is in danger. “Look, I don’t have time to explain. We have to go tonight. It’s an emergency. A matter of life and death.”(Chai 91). Here, Nea acts without thinking and makes it sound like Sourdi will die if they don’t go to Des Moines. Nea’s decision to call Duke for help leads to Sourdi’s husband getting punched in the face. Also, this episode results in the two sisters growing further apart, which is not Nea’s intention. The mother brings some light onto Nea as a character. She tells Nea: “You not like your sister. Your sister know how to bear things!”(Chai 90). What does the mother mean...

My Mother and Her Sister

...My Mother and Her Sister by Jane Rogers Looking back at our childhood, we all had a certain idea of how the world around us was working. An ignorant illusion that was created by our parents and the way we have been raised as a child. As we become grown-ups, everything is turned upside down and suddenly we see the world around us from another perspective. This is the exact theme in the short story “My Mother and Her Sister” by Jane Rogers, 1996, which tells the story about a girl who finally realises that the people around her, after all doesn’t match the illusions from her childhood. ”My Mother and Her Sister” is told from a 1st person narrator’s point of you, limited to the unnamed main character of short story. This is being expressed already in the first line of the short story: “My aunt Lucy…”(l.1). Reading the short story you get the feeling that the main character is a woman, because of her feminine values and behaving in life. The short story is set in modern time, and is characterised by a lot of flashbacks, throughout the story. The flashbacks reflect the main character’s life, as it was before she became a grown-up woman. Especially here, we get to know her aunt Lucy, and her deceased mother Dorothy, who are sisters and not to mention each other’s opposites. Both are included in the main character’s sweet childhood, where everything is portrayed with joy and happiness. Here Dorothy, the main character’s mother, is described as person who enjoys life...

Principles for Interpreting Narratives

...Narratives are meaningful stories that retell past events about specific characters (Fee and Stuart, 2003).  Biblical narratives are just like narratives except they are inspired by the Holy Spirit. Biblical narratives tell God's story. Biblical narratives have three components characters, plot, and plot resolution (Fee and Stuart, 2003). The characters include a protagonist, which is the main person in the story (Fee and Stuart,  2003).  An antagonist which is the person that causes the conflict and lastly, agonist which role is to support the main characters in the story.  A narrative main function is to retell a story using specific characters.      When interpreting narratives it is easy to make common mistakes associated with interpreting narratives. Although, there are many errors people make when interpreting narratives, I will only list three, which are moralizing, personalizing, and lastly misappropriation.     The first, error is moralizing. Moralizing assumes that moral teachings or principles for living can be taught from all scripture (Fee and Stuart, 2003). The second, error is personalizing. Personalizing involves reading a narrative and making it pertain to you, instead of realizing that the narrative tells a story about specific characters in that story (Fee and Stuart). The third and last error is misappropriation, which means to appropriate the text for purposes that it was not intended for (Fee and Stuart,  2003).      There are many principles for interpreting...
