Comparison Essay- Barbara’s letter
In the extract from ‘In Cold Blood’, Capote uses metaphors to express the views of Barbara, writing to her brother Perry from San Francisco. She highlights her disappointment surrounding the events but says she’s willing to forgive him. “It’s no shame to have a dirty face, the shame comes when you keep it dirty” the adjective ‘dirty’ is used as a metaphor representing the sins and actions of Perry.
She pointed out that she wasn’t too pleased with Perry’s actions, which had eventually ended him in prison. She was also aware that her criticism to him was going to result in resentment and actually thought of what could possibly happen “Not to hear from you at all or a letter telling me exactly what you think of me.”

Barbara loved Perry dearly but was angry at him at the same time, and that was the driving force of this passionate letter. Again she wanted Perry to know about her feelings towards him and also to see things from someone’s point of view. She often admitted her faults and weaknesses as human and in the same way she urged Perry that he should take full responsibility of his actions and shouldn’t blame his dad for any wrong doing. “i truthfully believe none of us can take the blame” the adjective ‘truthfully’ reminds us that Barbara is showing her feelings towards what has happened and is speaking very openly with Perry, giving him an acknowledgement of her thoughts and feelings.
Perry’s inabilities to show signs of sincere regret and lack of respect for laws embarrassed her deeply. However as Capote narrated, Barbara’s letter complimented Perry’s intelligence and excellent vocabulary skills. By the time Perry reads this far in the letter, his emotions facing him are very clear; Barbara may have added a compliment to sympathise with Perry and give him a small moral boost.
In the novel ‘true history of the Kelly gang’ Carey creates sympathy towards Ned through the use of metaphors “may I burn in hell if I speak false” he does this to give a different view of Ned Kelly to that of a cold blooded cop killer. In contrast to Barbara’s letter, Carey created the novel, telling a story as if Ned was narrating it through a letter towards his daughter. “My dearest daughter” the adjective ‘dearest’ again gives us father like imagery, creating sympathy for Ned.
Ned Kelly in 19th centaury Australia was seen as an outlaw and a cold blooded murderer. Carey introduces the idea of a daughter to portray Ned as a fatherly like figure, almost a saint, standing up for the harsh injustice of the Irish settlers in Australia. He explains to his daughter the reasons behind his acts. Ned never had a daughter, which suggests Carey is highly trying to sympathise with Ned. In capotes ‘In cold Blood’ Barbara’s letter to Perry is very emotional for him; it goes into detail about his upbringing and states that Perry cannot blame his upbringing for the murders. She describes him as a wild animal and urges him to change his ways. Whilst Carey uses the letter to create sympathy for Ned, capote includes it, not to sympathise but to almost tell of. It highlights Perry’s relationship with his family and to give us an understanding on the background Perry is from.

Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. The meeting was only 10 weeks away and Bernstein, Trexel’s president and chief executive officer, needed to present a coherent vision of the company’s new strategy. Bernstein believed that Trexel’s patented technology for manufacturing foamed plastics had the potential to revolutionize much of the worldwide plastics industry. His innovative process technology, known as MuCell, allowed the Woburn, Massachusetts company to produce foamed plastic utilizing 25% to 50% less material than traditional solid plastics without a significant decrease in the strength of the plastic. Bernstein believed the market for products produced via this...

...Season 1 Episode 1 Sex and the city aired "Once upon a time an English journalist came to New York. Elizabeth was attractive and bright, and right away she hooked up with one of the city's eligible bachelors. The question remains, is this a company we want to own? Tim was 42. A well-liked and respected banker, who made about two million a year. They met one evening, in typical New York fashion, at a gallery opening. Like it? Yes, actually I think it's quite interesting. What? I feel like I know you. Oh, doubtful. I just moved here from London. Really? That's my favorite city. It is? Absolutely. It was love at first sight. You know, I think perhaps I have met you somewhere before. For two weeks they snuggled... went to romantic restaurants... had wonderful sex... and shared the most intimate secrets. One day, he took her to a house he saw in the New York Times. How about if we start at the top? There are four bedrooms upstairs. Do you have any children? Not yet. That day Tim popped the question. Would you like to meet my folks Tues-day night? I'd love to. On Tuesday he called with some bad news. My mother's not feeling very well. Oh, gosh, I'm sorry. Can we take a rain check? Of course. Tell your mum I hope she feels better. When she hadn't heard from him for two weeks, she called. Tim, it's Elizabeth. That's an awfully long rain check. He said he was up to his ears and that he'd call the next day. He never did call... Bastard. She told me one day over coffee. I don't understand...

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...

"We were renting rooms in a big house with a shared kitchen. I was cooking breakfast when I looked up and saw this man-Victor- walk into the room. I had the strangest reaction. My legs wanted to carry me to him, but my head was telling me to stay away. The feelings were so strong that I felt faint and had to sit down." Once Maggie recovered from shock, she introduced herself to Victor, and the two of them spent half the morning talking. "That was it," said Victor.
