Michael Singleton College Admission Essay As a child, I had hopes of becoming an adult. Whether it was me playing army with my friends on the front lawn, roaming from yard to yard in the neighborhood, or putting on grandpa’s ties, we all tried to grow up as fast as possible. This came to a reality for me pretty fast. My father left my family when I was seven. I watched my mother struggle so much. Working always, barely seeing my brother and me, it was a constant grind for her, and I have much respect for her. I tried hard to be like her, i was too young to realize that she wanted me to stay young and grow up on my own time. She had obligations to me, and I had mine; to be a child and not worry about the struggles of the real world, and

...Affirmative Action College Admissions 2 Abstract Affirmative action has been a strong subject of discussion and debate for more than 30 years. Its use in college admissions has even been heard and ruled by the U.S. Supreme Court. Affirmative action is in essence, a policy or procedure developed by numerous institutions of higher learning to attempt to diversify their student bodies racially and by ethnicity. Looking closer at this procedure will display the advantages and disadvantages of affirmative action and college admissions. Affirmative Action College Admissions 3 Affirmative action is the practice, usually by institutions, of giving preference to racial minorities or women when hiring employees, giving awards, or deciding whom to admit (So you Wanna, 2003). Affirmative action arose out of a desire to bring minority groups into institutions and professions that had traditionally been dominated by white males. It first appeared after the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s as an attempt to accompany the new legal equality gained for minorities with social and economic equality. This paper I will discuss the history, advantages and disadvantages of affirmative action in college admissions. After explaining these issues I will state and my belief on the issue of affirmative action in college admissions. In 1961, President Kennedy signed Executive Order No. 10925, putting the term “affirmative action” its first use in relation to civil rights...

Grutter V. Bollinger Essay

...Grutter V. Bollinger Research Paper 2 Abstract Barbara Grutter (plaintiff) which is a resident of Michigan who was denied admissions into the University of Michigan Law School. Lee Bollinger (defendant) was president of the University of Michigan. Grutter filed this suit because the University had discriminated against the basis of race. Supreme Court ruled that the use of affirmative action in school admissions is constitutional if it treats race as some factor. Is affirmative action still necessary for guaranteeing equal access to educational opportunities at elite universities and graduate schools? Should admissions decisions be based solely on academic criteria and merit? Key Words: affirmative action, Grutter V. Bollinger, and diversity. Grutter V. Affirmative Action

...How Affirmative Action Ban Affect College Admission? Abstract: In this research paper I examined the effects of affirmative action ban on the university enrollment stage. The importance of this topic is that it is very contentious social issue today. In this paper I mentioned some of the experiences of African American activist Ward Connerly, examples of his movement and his opponent approach towards affirmative action. The research finds that affirmative action bans decrease the enrollment in selective universities. However, affirmative action debate will continue in the United States. From research discussions I find that affirmative action carries out emotional reaction, because the concern is the inequality in education. However throughout the research I found some confusions and mixed proofs for that concern. Affirmative action in college admission is one of today’s most argumentative social policy issues. The supporters of affirmative action view it as a just response to past or present discrimination, stress the social benefits of producing minority role models and leaders, and claim that there are educational benefits to diversity. At the same time its opponents contend that it is an impediment to achieving a race-blind society and may even be harmful to those it is intended to directly benefit. The issue has been in headlines as affirmative action in college admissions has been limited in recent years by court decisions...

Providing information on the school quality may elevate the sorting of students and improve the quality of human capital. In this study, we exploit publicly available university rankings in China and school-major level admission score data to estimate the sorting effect of information provision on school quality. We find evidence that the public ranking of universities significantly affects the decision of students and the outcome of university-student sorting. a b Corresponding author Tel.: +852-9722-3859 E-mail address: zli.economics@gmail.com Corresponding author Tel.: +1-917-9753195 E-mail address: cw1379@nyu.edu Catalogue 1. 2. Masters Admission

...Demystifying the American Graduate Admissions Process Karthik Raghunathan Graduate Class of 2010 Stanford Computer Science kr@cs.stanford.edu Abstract This paper attempts to discuss at length the various factors (along with their respective weightage) that the admissions committee at a top graduate school in the US takes into account while reviewing a Master of Science (MS) application. Disclaimer This paper is a mixture of facts, inferences and extrapolations, based on my personal experience as an admissions committee member at Stanford. All views expressed here are solely mine and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of Stanford University. 1. Introduction In this paper, I outline the various parameters involved in the complex decision making process of a Masters admissions committee in a top graduate school in the US. To clarify this further, (i) This report is mainly targeted at MS applicants, but a lot of it can be extended to PhD applications as well. In most cases, the requirements for a PhD admit will just be a stricter version of those mentioned here. (ii) I do not have a specific list of universities in mind when I say "a top graduate school". Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley and CMU are certainly up there, but I am not particularly referring to any specific list of graduate school rankings. In a more general sense, I am talking about schools where the default attitude of the admissions committee is "rejected, unless strongly proved otherwise" rather...

...COMPUTERIZATION OF COLLEGE ADMISSION TEST OF DON MARIANO MARCOS MEMORIAL STATE UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION Situation Analysis Technology nowadays is fast changing and new machines are developed in order to make the job faster and more convenient. Automation is designed to maximize, efficiency, convenient, and quality services offered. It is undeniable that automation is a lot faster compared to the traditional way of doing a job that requires more effort. According to IIM (Indian Institutes of Management) sources, a Computer- based Assessment, also known as Computer-based Testing, e-exam/online test, computer testing and computer-administered testing, is a method of administering tests in which the responses are electronically recorded and assessed. It enables educators and trainers to author, schedule, deliver and report on surveys and quizzes, test and exams online with real time results. It has many advantages over the traditional (paper-based) assessment. Wed-based Entrance Exam embraces a wide range of student activity ranging from the use of online testing/e-learning software to on-screen testing. And now Web-based system is commonly used in many organizations (Besnard et al., 2006). There are a variety of aspects needed to be taken in to account when Web-based assessment is deployed, such as software quality, secure delivery, reliable network (if internet-based), capacities, support, maintenance, software cost for development and test delivery and licenses. Gap Year: Good/Bad

...from high school wants to go to college. Some decide to directly enrol into college or university, while the others opt for a gap of a year prior to enrolling in higher education. The time period between high school graduation and arrival at college can be the result of several factors, including deferred admission at a student's college of choice or purposely taking a gap year to prepare for the next step of formal education. The argument arises when the students prefer taking gap to explore the world & to find some field they are interested in and when the parents worry about their children getting off track regarding higher education. Traditionally gap years are seen as time out to travel between school and university, to learn life experiences and broaden horizons. It is not unusual for a student to hesitate to pack bags before heading off to college right away. They might want to take a year off before going to college. Taking a gap year is also linked to higher motivation in college. While many students take a year off to earn money for tuition, programs involving international travel or service work are more common among affluent students or those from competitive high schools, where pressure to get good grades and gain admission to a leading college is most intense. Burnout from the competitive pressure of high school and a desire "to find out more about themselves," are the top two reasons students take gap years. Many competitive colleges and universities encourage applicants...

Great Essay Presentation

...Tips for a Great College Essay Why write an essay? The purpose of the essay is to convince admission officers whom you’ve never met, in less than ten minutes, that you would be a good match for their colleges. At the most basic level, it allows admission officers to evaluate your communication and writing skills. In addition, the essay allows admission officers to discover more about you as a person – a side of you not shown by statistics like grades and SATs. The essay gives information about your history, attitudes, interests and creativity; it gives a sense of your values and goals. What admission officers are doing is creating a community…looking to see how you would fit in that community, what would you bring to that community and what sets you apart. How the essay is evaluated • • • Is your writing mechanically sound? Is your writing style comfortable? Can you write a good sentence? Can you write a good paragraph? Do you address the question asked? Can you form a thesis? Can you discuss a theme? Is your argument logical? Can you get in and out of the essay with some finesse? Do you write with style, nuance and creativity? Do you write with a distinctive voice? Choosing a topic Choose the essay topic that appeals to you most. The topic is less important than your delivery Remember: there is no right or wrong answer. The college just wants to know who you are and how your mind works. Oum Student Manual

...In Malaysia, the provision for education is the biggest challenge for the government as the nation strives to become a fully developed country by the year 2020. One solution is to use technology as an enabler to bring education to the masses. Universities are taking up the challenge by updating the content of their programs but more importantly, utilizing the latest technologies to improve the delivery systems. One of the emerging delivery systems much talked about is Open and Distance Education which is fast becoming the way of providing education to the masses. As a result of this new phenomenon, in August 1999, the Minister of Education invited Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn. Bhd. (METEOR), a consortium of 11 public universities in the country, to set up an open university. The move by the Minister led to the establishment of Open University Malaysia (OUM) in August 2000 followed by its official launching on 26 August 2002 by the Right Honorable Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia. OUM is the seventh private university in Malaysia. Although incorporated as a private university under the Private Higher Education Institutions Act 1996, the University leverages on the quality, prestige and capabilities of its strategic partners - a consortium of the 11 public universities. OUM adopts the motto “University for All" which is consistent with its philosophy on democratization of education. This philosophy underlies the belief...
