College Survival Guide

❖ Distance learning and the internet – General

1. When going through your courses you need to remember that you are online. You are not in a class room, listening to an instructor. You have classmates that are from all over the country. You must be considerate to others and have a little bit of censorship when discussing situations. This is a great way to get to know people and make new friends.

2. Also, remember that you are on the internet, use it to your advantage. Use resources that you can find and do research, do not just guess at things. Look them up, find the answer.

❖ The University of Phoenix

1. At the University of Phoenix everyone wants you to succeed. There is so much motivation around every corner. The staff they have is amazing and they are always there to help if you ever need some assistance. Remember you have three different advisors that will be with you through your whole career, they are there to check up on you and answer any questions you could have. Your instructors are there not only to teach you, but to help you with questions along the way.

2. The University of Phoenix also has many different outlets for you to use while in class. The Center for Writing Excellence gives you help with plagiarism, editing, and revising. There is also a Center for Mathematical Excellence which will help you with any mathematical questions you may have.

3. Remember to use the University library as much as possible. It offers so many options for help and if you are not sure how to use any of the options given, there are tutorials for everything, to teach you how.

❖ Academic Honesty

1. When writing papers and expressing you opinion, you must remember that it is your opinion. If you are doing research and are using someone else’s words you must remember to cite the author,

Freshman Guide to College Survival

...September 2015 The Freshman Guide to College Survival To all current and future seniors, what are your plans after high school? Going to college? Ok, and what do you expect to get out of college? You probably think you know what differentiates high school from college but, I can assure you that you have no idea. From living situations to time management, college is different roller coaster but, it is on your shoulders on how you handle it. This transition is not going to be easy to deal with, for you nor your parents. Most freshmen can handle themselves for the first couple of days while others are already calling on the first night for the first flight back home. Now at this point you might be thinking "Where will I go?", "What should I wear?", "Will people like me?” etc. but, in reality none of that matters. There are more than a dozen rules in which you may need to actually survive your freshman year of college but, the two factors in which you’ll need the most guidance from is the Freshman Facebook page and roommates. Before you pack up almost everything that you own: clothes, shoes, and photos of everybody you know… one of the first things you’ll likely do after enrolling in school is join the Freshman Facebook Page for your class. Whether you post about the food, classes, or just other classmates that you see around campus, posting helps you to get to know every freshman (even the people you don’t see) socially. Currently, looking at most college freshmen, they don’t really...

...Once upon a time, I was sitting in my room on a dark and stormy night watching T.V. Then all of a sudden my power went out, so I went to look for a flash light, but I started hearing noises from the garage, so I went out there to see what it was. When I went out there, and my garage was open and no one was there. Then, I panicked because I didn’t know what to do. The garage was closed when I got home, so I freaked-out and I closed it then went into the house. That’s when I started hearing those noises. I was scared, so I went to find my dad so I could tell him what was going on because I had know idea about what happened. Then, we went to the garage to see what was going on, and when we went back to the garage we found out that some one was breaking into it. We called the cops but, by the time they got there, the guy was gone. I had this weird feeling that someone was watching me, so I told my dad. He said that he had the same feeling as well, so we went all around the house to find out where that feeling could be coming from. Well we went outside to find out what it could be, and when we got out there, someone was watching us from our neighbor’s house. We went back into the house to fix the power, then we started hearing noises again, so we went to go find out what it was. We found the noise. It was under the house, but we didn’t want to go under there. We called my uncle. He went under there he found it, and when he found it he came back and told us that he couldn’t see...

The Warm Bodies

...A funny new twist on a classic love story, WARM BODIES is a poignant tale about the power of human connection. After a zombie epidemic, R (a highly unusual zombie) encounters Julie (a human survivor), and rescues her from a zombie attack. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and as the two form a special relationship in their struggle for survival, R becomes increasingly more human - setting off an exciting, romantic, and often comical chain of events that begins to transform the other zombies and maybe even the whole lifeless world As much as I enjoy "The Walking Dead" on AMC and movies such as "28 Days Later," one of my ongoing complaints about the explosion of the zombie genre is the general mopery and overall predictability of those ever-staggering creatures. They lurch. They snarl. They sniff the air for the scent of human flesh. They pounce and gnaw. They pound windows and doors, and express frustration when confronted with 10-foot-high cyclone fences. And then they get shot in the head and die. That's pretty much it. We almost never get inside the rotted mind of the zombie or see things from the zombie point of view. They're forever penned in as the Big Metaphor. One of the many exhilarating pleasures of "Warm Bodies" is the flipping of that script. This is a bloody fresh twist on the most popular horror genre of this century, with none-too-subtle echoes of a certain star-crossed romance that harks back to a certain bard who placed a certain...

Zombie Apocalypse

...Ten Reasons to Hope for the Zombie Apocalypse 1. You’ll never have to deal with your evil boss again. Unless, of course, she/he’s a zombie, in which case, you’ll get to bash her brains in (double win!). 2. When your kids ask you, “What’s for dinner?” you can sweetly reply, “go kill it yourself!” 3. You’ll finally get to test out your Tommy Knocker on some zombies, made by the one and only Zombie Fighter Jango! 4. All that knowledge you acquired from reading countless zombie book and weatching all the classic zombie movies will be put to good use (it’s not just entertainment!). 5. Your neighbors will finally stop complaining about your scraggly garden (I think a talent for killing plants is a sign that you’ll be able to kill zombies just as easily – it makes sense). 6. If the government shuts down, there will finally be a legitimate reason for it. 7. Maybe, just maybe, Daryl Dixon will come along, and you can impress him with your crossbow skills (amongst other things, *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*). 8. Twerking will be a thing of the past (one would hope). 9. Stupid diets like Atkins, South Beach, and juice cleanses will immediately go out of style. Twigs for everyone! 10. There will be a shortage of fossil fuels, and we won’t be polluting the environment at such a rapid rate (you’re welcome, Al Gore!). I hope I was able to brighten your day, now that you can add these to your list of reasons to anxiously await the zombie apocalypse. It’s all about silver...

...Unleash the (W)horde My game is a strategy tower defense game with zombies in it! You build different kinds of towers to defend yourself against the zombie whores that are trying to kill you. The theme of the game is basically just zombie survival after you cleared a map you move on to a new one. The setting is everywhere around the world around the time of 2015, from Paris to Bangkok just that it’s a lot darker and grimmer. The goal in the game is to kill all the zombies in the world and of course survive! The character in the game is Bengt Rolfsson he is a middle-aged man around 45 years old with grey hair and a grey beard, he has no family that he remembers since he woke up not remembering a thing except how to build basic towers and turrets, he doesn’t know why he keeps fighting since he has nothing to get from it….or does he? Why you keep playing in basically the human instinct of survival no man really wants to die! You build these turrets and towers by choosing them in the menu in the bottom left they cost a different amount of zombie teeth which you get when you kill a zombie it varies from zombie to zombie since they have a rotten body some teeth might have fallen out. Why you should play my game is because it’s a new thing! There are some game out there that a zombies vs turrets like the game “Plants vs Zombies” but I’m imagining a bit more realistic graphics and of course better gameplay and...

Modern Culture’s Fascination with the Undead

...generation. The essay will continue with a discussion on the most recent and ever so popular vampire films Twilight and “Let me in” and the TV series True Blood and why the latest X and Y generations seems to lack the fear people once had of these blood thirsty creatures. I will also discuss several of the most recent Zombie movies and how they’ve changed over the last two decades. Although zombie literature does not frequent the shelves of libraries and book stores, as do vampire literature. There is a zombie fiction novel written in 2006 called World War Z by Max Brooks, which became an immediate hit and a New York Times bestseller. Brooks had also authored the cult hit “The Zombie Survival Guide”, an exhaustively researched, zombie-themed parody of pop-fiction survival guide. I will also include sources indicating the US Government’s interest in zombie fiction and how the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has made use of this pop culture phenomenon to better inform the public on disaster preparation. In my conclusion, I will argue that the generation Xrs’ fascination with zombies, vampires and all things undead related is part of a search for immortality. In an age of increasing narcissism, identity crisis and denial of reality, generation X’s obsession with the undead seems to be a healthy distraction from the cold bleak truth-that when it’s over…it’s over. My research consists mostly of...

Zombie Sociology in Literature

...Zombie Outbreak in Literature Looking at literature, there are so many different genres and subgenres. When writing is involved, there are hundreds of possibilities and potentials to make an amazing piece that’ll be loved, hated, and talked about for years to come. There is a certain genre that has come into higher and higher power, that’s almost as well renowned as romance or adventure would be the horror genre. In horror there are so many amazing authors, capable of causing the reader to feel such intense emotions through just their writing. But unlike romance or adventure, these emotions are more so fear, anxiety, or paranoia. They write books or poems that leave people checking their closets, plugging in a nightlight, and hiding underneath their blankets to go to sleep at night. Some of the most amazing authors include H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Dean Koontz, and Peter Straub. All of them having different writing styles and stories, yet their pieces all yield the same results. Just like all the other genres, horror can also be broken down into different subgenres. This includes types like psychological horror, which leaves the reader questioning everyone’s sanity, even their own. There’s gothic, involving a mixture of psychological terror in romantic settings, including mysteries, ghosts, castles, decay, madness, hereditary curses, and death. Also on this list of subgenres is supernatural, the main cause of people seeing things out of the corner of their...

Zombie Attack Persuasive Speech

...Preface: To whoever is reading this right now: This is a guidebook for surviving a zombie attack. The author, which is me, is going to tell you about some tips on escaping from zombies in different places. These places are former public facilities with large population. The whole guidebook is based on my experience of watching zombie films and TV shows. Since I am a big fan of zombie and watched plenty of films and TV shows about zombie, I have some suggestions on how to get away with these creatures. I hope this guidebook could help you escape from dangerous situations. Wish we all survive and thrive. Best, Yunhui Chen A short description of zombies • Zombies are dangerous creatures. They have the appearance which is similar to human being’s but not the same. People can easily notice these creatures are different from mankind by their rotten flesh and stinky cloths. The staggering way of walking is also a great way to differentiate them from human beings. • They have the instinct of biting people, turn normal people into their kind and sometimes (in some cases but not always) they would eat human brains to expand their population. • In most cases zombies do not run because of their limbs are inflexible. However, some of them may have the ability to run. • We could not figure out what causes a zombie attack. The only thing we know is that zombies are formed because of a special kind of virus. This kind of virus is injected into human body through zombie’s bite. While...

Analyse of from One Mind, Into Another

...Analyse of From one mind, into another In the short story ”from one mind, into another,” you will hear about a man who has lost his memories after a car crash, in a zombie world. The man evolves throughout the story, and quickly takes the name Mark Jacobs. It is this developing of a new identity after amnesia, and his ability to quickly adapt to the post zombie apocalypse world, that is intriguing me in this short story. That is why I have chosen this topic to analyse in me paper. What is trigger this progression, is it the environment or a specific event, how does he evolve as a person, and how does he adapt to the world. The story start by a man is waked up by a radio, in a turned over car. The man looks at his jacket and finds out that his surname is Jacobs. But he cannot remember his first name, but think that Mark sounds nice. But why is it so easy for him to pick a name? The place Mark wakes up in can be described as a post-apocalypse place. The roads and buildings destroyed, blood everywhere, and bullet casings all over the place. Mark even calls it a sort of a warzone. Mark is properly a soldier, because he is wearing a camouflage jacket with a nametag, just like the uniform worn by the military. So he knows by instinct what to do in a warzone like the one he is located in. He knows that he have no time to spare, and therefore he is choosing the name, that first comes in mind for him. In this case it is Mark, it could be because his unconsciousness still remember...

Zombie Survival Guide Book Report

...Zombie Survival Guide The Zombie Survival Guide is a very excellent book. People think its only about zombies but that is wrong, it can also teach you life saving skills. Like if you had to live on your own in the woods this tells you how to start fires, how not to be seen. How to prepare, what to have, and what not to have. Teaches you how to make supplies, warning signs of situations, and what to avoid. The conflict of the story is that a zombie apocalypse breaks out, and this book helps you to survive. And this book is a list of do’s and don’ts. Everyone needs to know how to preserve, prepare, and execute; whether it’s zombies, dogs, or people. No one knows what can happen so saing there is no such thing and I don’t need to prepare are vital life changing mistakes. What happens if you wreck your car in the middle of nowhere and you have no knowledge of what to do? People say oh your smart you’ll be fine, but that’s because they think oh it won’t happen to me or I think I know everything I need to. But that’s where ignorance has gotten to people’s brains. Just because I’ve camped in my back yard and lived means I can do it in the middle of nowhere and chances are those people are going to die. Now compare that person to me if I had the book. Who do you think would live longer? The person that survived a child attack for the last smore at a bonfire, or the guy with the book of how to survive in the wild during a time of devastation and anarchy? I’ll leave it to you to decide...

World War Z

...September 25, 2013 Title: World War Z Directed by: Marc Forster Written by: Matthew Michael Starring: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox Running time: 116 minutes Rated: PG-13 for intense frightening zombie sequences, violence and disturbing images Before the movie was released there where a lot of rumors about it, key executives were fired, the production was far above budget, scenes had to be rewritten and filmed again. On top of that creative differences between director Marc Foster and main actor/producer Brad Pitt would eventually cause the movie to come out half a year late. Whatever the rumors may have been, the result is not bad at all. The movie is immediately off to a very fast start, within 5 minutes all hell breaks loose. Before that we are introduced to Gary (Brad Pitt) who is a former UN-employee who quit working to spend more time with his family. He travels to Philadelphia where, while waiting for heavy traffic, a huge zombie outbreak takes place out of nowhere. Hundreds of people attack each other and then arise from the death, off course this is answered with huge panic from surrounding people. It doesn’t take long before it’s clear that sudden outbreak is actually a worldwide epidemic virus release. Gary is asked to travel around the world to find a cure, by finding the source of the virus. This panic and action turned out to be a great introduction for all the nerve-racking scenes that would later follow. Never before...

The Global Post-Apocalypse

...The Global Post-Apocalypse Response Paper The foreign movie I watched is a French zombie movie called ‘La Horde’. I had actually watched this movie a few times with subtitles and when reading the assignment immediately thought of this film. This one review written by Felix Vasquez Jr mentions how it is not quite the same as other zombie movies due to lack of emphasis on the characters. ““La Horde” is one of the many zombie flicks that just doesn’t understand a good zombie movie has to be about the people in and around it and less about the zombies”. In this movie the zombies take center stage and you cannot get into the story. However it also mentions in this review how all the audience wants to see in a movie like this is gore. “Necks are chomped on, bodies pile up, and the zombies all look menacing as they gather around the high rise prepared to feast on whatever crosses their paths” This movie is based in Paris in 2008 around the exact same time the economy fell and the EU had to bail out fellow countries of the European union to the financial situation. This movie could be in context to what happened during the financial crisis. The characters in this movie done whatever they had to do to survive and to keep their friends alive. It also shows that sometimes you need make unlikely alliances to achieve something and in this case the police had to make an unlikely alliance to stay alive. The plot revolves around a group of policemen who embark on a mission seeking...

Zomkiat: The Emergency Zombie Survival

...The Emergency Zombie Survival Kit (ZOMKIT) is designed specifically for a Zombie Armageddon, but cannot however guarantee one’s safety or fate. The ZOMKIT is one of the essential items needed when venturing to a permanent residence. For safety, gather all the items on the list and always store it in an accessible place preferable in your home or office. Preparing a kit ahead of time will allow valuable time during the chaos that will transpire. Nevertheless, avoid entering highly populated metropolitan cities as one will be greatly outnumbered by the undead or desperate people escaping their doom. Typically the undead will revisit areas familiar when they were alive. By that same token stay away from large shopping structures or complexes....
