Recreational Hunting

...Recreational Hunting: The Needs and the Wants Melissa Mosley COM/156 University Composition and Communications II 5/16/14 Trish Prince Recreational Hunting: The Needs and the Wants Hunting has been around as long as man has been hungry. With the modernization of times, the necessity of hunting has changed. Hunting is no longer the only way a family can be fed with the meat of the animals, clothed with the hides from the carcus, or houses built with the tools created from the bones of the animals. Although the reasons to hunt have changed, the need has not. Recreational hunting, especially deer hunting, not only controls wildlife populations, it also provides tradition in families and makes their bonds stronger. Managing the population of deer is an important way to decrease the amount of deer vs. automobile accidents. Imagine for a minute, an early morning commute that goes from home to work. Barely light out the path goes along a long stretch of interstate. Driving the recommended speed limit of 70 mph a large male white-tailed deer, a buck, comes out of no where and runs directly into oncoming traffic. Smack! The deer, a once beautiful and majestic creature, goes flying onto the pavement. He is now a bloody pile of fur and bones. A journey for food is now a death sentence. A vehicle, a once prize possession, is now a dented and broken pile of scrap metal. An ever increasing population of deer in the area causing yet another car accident. In 2005...

...Risk of Second Hand Smoke Belinda Jones Com/156 March 30, 2014 Vally Behjou Passive Smoke Smokers may never realize the harm they do to those around them. A smoker knows the risks they pose to their own health, but do they stop and think about the risks their second hand smoke poses to those who surround them. All nonsmokers are exposed to second hand smoke or passive smoke at one time or place, it simply can not be avoided. Until recent laws took effect, exposure to second hand smoke was everywhere from the work place to public places. Children are often exposed to second hand smoke by their parents and can not choose to walk away from it like an adult can. Just consider how many adults smoke in the car when they have a child as a passenger. The media is full of commercials on cancer and smoking letting all know about that health risk. But besides lung cancer, there are other problems associated with the second hand smoke, especially in young children. Smoke in the Air First of all what is passive or second...

Juvenile Offenders: Children Worth Giving a Second Chance

...Juvenile Offenders: Children Worth Giving a Second Chance Sarah Kee COM/156 June 13, 2012 “Young people are not only disproportionately the perpetrators of crime; they are also disproportionately the victims of crime”—Kelly Richards. When I think about the severity of crime, my last thought is that a child would commit such thing. When that does happen, it comes as a shock to me. Although I do agree that a juvenile should be punished for their wrong doings, I don’t agree with that way the law handles things. Juvenile offenders charged as adults are being robbed of their lives and deserve to get a second chance to make better decisions. My Take on How the Law Handles Juveniles Offenders From a personal standpoint, I can’t help but disagree with how the law sometimes takes its course. In this case, my matter of contention is juveniles being charged as adults for severe crimes. That’s not the only problem, not only are they being charged as adults, but also they are being sent to these adult prisons to serve time. I don’t want to give off the wrong impression that I feel it’s alright for children to commit such severe crimes and not have some source of consequence. The controversy here is to look at the big picture and consider another alternative for the problem. I’m aware of the severity of one committing a homicide or even a sexual assault, especially for it to be a child. That intuition comes from somewhere though. Causes of Juvenile Abomination There are a few...

Women in the Technology Field

...Women in the Technology Field COM/156 Women in the Technology Field The revolution of technology had begun centuries ago; it had been the work of many over the years to bring it where it is today. It entailed people with bright imaginations to come up with technological inventions. These inspiring designs were then taken and built upon to improve its operation. Finally computers were no longer a revolution, but an evolution. During the course of time many men as well as women were affected by technology. Unfortunately, women have not received the same form of acceptance as the men in this field of work. After careful research, women in technology, they found it was difficult to find the names of women influential in technology. In the era when women are increasingly prominent in many industries, there are few women in technology. There are many reasons some women might avoid a career in the technology field. Technology advancement and improvements increase the separation between genders, which show that industrialization and the principles of gender influence each other. Men and women have very different decision making-processes when assessing new technology. In the past, women were considered to be incapable to perform on the same level as men when dealing with technology. Women have been mainly seen as the “stay at home and take care of the kids” person. The majority of professionals in the technology field are male; these are manly environments in which...

Undecided

...Undecided Title Jessica Cottrill COM/156 Gerald Chouinard There are two gods in Greek mythology that stand out from a medical standpoint, in particular. Those being Hippocrates and Asclepius. Hippocrates has become known to many historians and physicians as the founding father of medicine due to his taking it and making it a rational practice, free from magic and superstition. (Osborn, 2010.) The influences of Hippocrates are vast and still provide a basis for physicians today. He was the first to document medical histories and use patient histories to study their illnesses. He factored in all aspects of their lives including past medical problems, the climate in which they live, diet and their line of work. The Hippocratic collection is composed of Hippocrates writings from his research and practice of medicine. It is composed of sixty books documenting information on every part of the human body including the brain, skin and eyes. It is unclear as to whether Hippocrates wrote all of the collection, but it is thought to have been written by himself and his students. (Truman, 2013.) The myth of Asclepius and his contributions to modern medicine are surrounded by more fantastical stories of healing than, Hippocrates. According to ancient Greek history, Asclepius was so skilled in his surgical and healing capabilities, it appeared as though he could rise the dead to living again. According to myth, Asclepius was struck down by the gods who were...

Film Noir and Romance: It’s No Fairy Tale Baby

...Film Noir and Romance: It’s No Fairy Tale Baby Film Noir may not seem like a very romantic subject considering how many of the couples in the films are eventually lead into their death or a prison term. There are some romantic aspects to these type of cinema. Even if a couple does have a tragic end, there is always some sort of romance in the middle. It could be lust or love, but it is usually there. While all Film Noir never ends as fairy tale, an audience can look at most of the films and see how love, or lust, can drive people to do despicable acts of crime. Before describing how romance and the many varying types of love appear in Film Noir, it is important to understand the different gender roles each character plays. The male protagonist paired with a femme fatale is the usual leading roles in a Film Noir, but that isn’t a hard set rule. Men can play the male victim, damaged men, a private eye, a psychopath, or a homme fatal, (Spicer 85). Women can also play a variety of roles such as the nurturer, the good-bad girl, the female victim, or a femme fatale, (Spicer 90). Male victims can be a protagonist who just gets trapped in the web of lies weaved by a beautiful woman, a femme fatale. The damaged man is usually a veteran who has a hard time adjusting to society after war or a police officer who loses control. After seeing so much violence it is hard for some men to see the world as a happy place. These men are usually paired with a nurturing female character. A private...
