Home health care is a very stressful job at times. Communication is a major part of the job, the patient and their caregiver may be of different cultures or gender, which can make communication difficult if each person is not aware or accept each other’s differences. Most cases are one-to-one meaning that it is just the patient and caregiver in a home setting. Some cases are in homes where other family members also live which can be viewed as a good or bad thing. Family members can make the job easier or harder. The job can be easier when the family members openly communicate with the caregiver and offer assistance. Family members that do not communicate with the caregiver, or want nothing to do with the care of their loved one make the job hard and uncomfortable. The first day a caregiver is on a case they should be polite, eager to work and get to know the patient. In return the patient is usually polite and friendly in return. This type of communication is called relational or transactional communication. “Relational or transactional communication means that communicators exert mutual influence on each other such that the approach one participant takes suggests how the other might respond” (du Pre, 2005, p. 58). So if a patient comes off as rude and difficult, the caregiver will become frustrated and not want to work with that patient after a few unsuccessful attempts at breaking the ice. There are cases where there is more than one caregiver, for example, when caregivers work on shifts. Communication between these caregivers is sometimes limited because verbal communication is less likely to occur. Written communication is how most caregivers will communicate with the person on the next shift. Notes about the day or updates on the patients’ needs are left for the next person to read so that they have a better understanding of what is needed that day.
