Community and Recreation: Community Recreation

Community

The Merriam- Webster (2012) defines community as a unified body of individuals with common interests living in a particular area. A community is also a local grouping within which people carry out a full round of life activities. Although families or other groups can sometimes be relatively self-sufficient, most of them do not live in isolation. For many reasons, ranging from economic interdependence to shared cultural values, families and other groups normally join together to form communities. The community, rather than the family, becomes the social setting for most everyday economic, political, religious, educational, recreational and similar activities. As communities become larger and more complex, other types of organizations are often established within the community to perform these various functions. Thus, a community is a type of social organization that is territorially located and provides the setting for dealing with most of the needs and problems of daily living. Communities vary widely in size and complexity.

Recreation

McLean and Hurd., (2011) defines recreation as a network of public agencies that provide such facilities as parks, playgrounds, aquatic centers, sports fields, and community centers in thousand of cities, towns, and countries. Recreation is also defined as any activity performed during one’s leisure or free time. Recreation is very essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement or pleasure and are considered to be “fun”. Recreation implies participation to be healthy and refreshing for the mind and body. Recreation is an essential part of human life and finds many different forms which are shaped naturally by individual interests but also by the surrounding social construction.

...Recreation Definition: Recreation ➢ Refreshment by means of some pastime, agreeable exercise, or the like. Macquarie Dictionary ➢ Any form of play, amusement, etc. used for refreshment of body or mind. Collins Australian Pocket English Dictionary ➢ Simply defined, recreation refers to experiences and activities chosen and pursued by the individual in his/her free time; the basis being that the experience sought and activities pursued, in the real sense of the word, 're-creates' the individual so that he/she may be refreshed to enable him/her to resume daily obligations, whatever those may be. John Ap (1986) Recreation trends and implications for government. In R. Castle, D. Lewis & J. Mangan (eds) Work, Leisure and Technology. Melbourne, Longman Cheshire,167-83 ( p. 167). ➢ Recreation consists of an activity or experience, usually chosen voluntarily by the participant, either because of the immediate satisfaction to be derived from it, or because he perceives some personal or social values to be achieved by it. It is carried on in leisure time, and has no work connotations, such as study for promotion in a job. It is usually enjoyable and when it is carried on as part of organized or community services, it is designed to meet constructive and socially worthwhile goals of the individual participant, the group and society at large. Fly Fishing

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Fishes are caught essentially for consumption. However, catching fish happens to be a well-known recreational pastime as well. Recreational fishing is also known as sport fishing. The main motive behind recreational fishing is pleasure or relaxation along with competition in some cases. It should not be mixed with subsistence or commercial fishing. While subsistence fishing is for basic survival, commercial fishing is essentially for profit. In some countries, recreational fishing has various rules as well as regulations to follow and enjoy the process. The regulations that are imposed on recreational fishing include the laws and the licensing restrictions that deal with limiting the procedures by which the fish might be caught. The most typical of these restrictions include prohibition in using nets and using hooks that are not into the mouth. The most usual form of such fishing is done with the aid of line, reel, rod, hooks, etc. These devices should be used along with the huge range of available baits. In order to help the individuals in the act of fishing, devices called terminal tackle are also used widely. The devices that are generally considered under terminal tackle include floats, swivels, weights, etc. These devices usually help to complement the bait that is being presented to the target. Sometimes lures, instead of baits are also used in recreational fishing. Some of the enthusiastic individuals insist...

Community Problems

...If I were given the chance to identify and improve a problem in my community, I would try to build a safe haven for young people from drugs, violence, and gangs. With the recent outbreak of violence, I feel that communities would benefit by having recreational centers that would have activities, organizational affiliations, gym equipment, and studio equipment that would occupy the time of young people and put their energy to good use. The recreation center could also offer educational opportunities as well, such as tutors, computer classes, online courses, GED classes, job placement, college/university enrollment, counseling, and much more to better help educate the young people of today. Young people not only need help in their social skills, but help with educational endeavors also. If this were to happen, I would volunteer my spare time to the cause, because we, the young people of today, are still the future of tomorrow. Young people need to have a sense of knowing that someone cares about their well being, what they are doing and how they are doing it, where they are going and how they are getting there, and what type of people they are hanging with. Young people need to have a sense of discipline. Young people need direction in their life, a sense of knowing that they are headed down the right path to success. Being a successful human being gives meaning to your life, knowing that someone helped you to achieve a better place in life and giving strength to your existence...

Changing Cultures of Different Dances

...Chapter 1 The Problem Introduction Recreation is an important human activity which benefits a person not only the physical but also a person’s well being. The “need to do something for recreation” seems to be an essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be “fun” the term “recreation” implies participation to have a healthy and refreshing mind and body. It is also very entertaining. Active and healthy recreation is already practice before. One example is the era of Romans. The Romans had the coliseum, where they watched chariot races and other entertainment. The Greeks had amphitheaters where they viewed drama and comedy. Others invented the Olympics, one of the greatest entertainment sport spectacles in the world. Even the bible discusses singing, dancing, music, and other forms of acceptable recreation, so even the most ancient civilizations enjoyed entertainment and recreation of some sort. Aristotle said that happiness result from being the best we can be. The sort of happiness that Aristotle was thinking should not be equated with simple pleasure. Amusing ourselves can be pleasant, but he says it is childish. Amusement for sheer pleasure degrades rather than improves us. Aristotle admits that amusement is helpful because it refreshes us from work. But amusement is never as good as true leisure, which...

The Positive Impacts of Travelling

...“Travel brings both positive and negative impacts.” In about 300 words essay outline, discuss the phrase by connecting it to the development of the tourism industry. St. Augustine once wrote: The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page. I totally agree with the sentence above as traveling brings positive effects indeed. First of all, we experience new things when we travel. We get to interact with new places, regions and cultures. For instance, by traveling to Malaysia where people of different races live side by side, one may discover the relative racial harmony. When traveling in a different part of the world, we expand our knowledge and widen our perspective. While visiting places, our vision becomes enlarged just as by sitting at a small place makes one’s vision narrow. Secondly, travelling provides us the opportunity to disconnect from our routine. We relax and enjoy during the travel without have to worry our problems or issues for some period. We are all burdened with crazy schedules of work or schooling. Travelling away alone or with friends may help us to relax ourselves. The distance of travelling may also help one figures things out that they would not have understood. In the view of the environment, travelling helps promote conservation of wildlife and natural resources such as rainforests, as these are regarded as tourism assets. The entrance charges or guide fees we paid helps generate funding for maintaining animal preserves...

Personal Style Inventory

...Ryan Conrad Personal Style Inventory Signature Code: ESFP My first letter in the signature was an E for Extrovert. I know that being an extrovert has been a great asset to me at my work at Target. On a normal 8 hour shift I come into contact with well over a hundred guests and will most likely interact with at least 30-40 asking where something is or if we have a particular product. As it is the Christmas season now I need to be extremely helpful with guest as well as be outgoing enough to ask a puzzled looking guest if I can “help them find anything today?” As well as the many guests I help, I have many coworkers; we have many new hired on because of the holidays, and many I don’t know their names. In order to work most efficiently and effectively, I need to introduce myself constantly so there is no confusion with “hey you’s.” Being an extrovert definitely helps with this kind of working environment. Of course, with how many guests and coworkers I come into contact there are plenty who are introverts and slow the process. Although being extroverted has helped me greatly in my retail job, it hasn’t helped me so much in day-to-day talking with people and a lot of sales associates. I know I tend to ramble a lot and when I’m making a purchase I tend to think aloud and give out more information then I really intend or need too. I recently purchased a laptop computer at best buy and the sales associate there had asked me what I would most likely be using it for, and instead...

Everyday Heroes

...Jim Fim Mrs. Dyer 5 Paragraph Essay September 10, 2012 Everyday Heroes What’s a hero to you? It’s probably a superstar or a celebrity. But everyday heroes can have more of an impact on a person than a superstar. Everyday heroes like my dad have heroic qualities including enthusiasm, persistence, and compassion. Enthusiasm is a great trait to possess because it helps you have fun. Once, when I wasn’t feeling good, my dad wanted me to go to a car show. I was exhausted, but I went anyway. It was a blast! My dad helps me to have fun when I’m not having fun. Although it may not seem like it, my dad likes having a good time. My dad’s enthusiasm helps him to provide a great time for himself and others. Persistence is another quality my dad possesses; it means not giving up. My dad definitely won’t let me quit if I’m having trouble with something. He will keep trying to finish a job even if it’s not working out for him. Basically, he just plain won’t give up. Persistence enables you to overcome obstacles. My dad’s greatest quality is compassion because he cares about people around him. When I was sick in the middle of the night, my dad went out to the store to get me medicine. He also lets me do stuff and go places. My dad buys me unnecessary things sometimes, also. My dad’s compassion sets an example for others. You may not think of my dad as a superstar or celebrity, but in my eyes, my dad’s enthusiasm, persistence, and compassion make him a superstar. When a person possesses...
