The Death of an Egocentric
Have you ever been so angry with your parents that you’ve contemplated running away from home? After you calmed down, did you logically realize how terrible of an idea that was? Chris McCandless was placed in a similar situation in the novel, “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer. However, rather than acknowledging the conceptual faults behind running away from home, McCandless made the conscious decisions to follow through and purse his augmented and simply erratic adventure. McCandless’s decision was inevitably futile because although he had moderately justifiable intentions of going into the wild, his ignorance, arrogance, and lack of preparedness surmounted his intentions and would inevitably cost him his life. One significant conceptual flaw in regards to why McCandless went on such an adventure was his lack of maturity. Similar to McCandless, Krakauer also pursued an expedition to escape responsibility and bonds of human interaction and intimacy. Krakauer stated, “The accumulated clutter of day-to-day existence---the lapses of conscience, the unpaid bills, the bungled opportunities, the dust under the couch, the inescapable prison of your genes---all of it is temporarily forgotten, crowded from your thoughts by an overpowering clarity of purpose and by the seriousness of the task at hand” (P.143). Without a doubt, Krakauer reveals the similarities between his incentive to go into the wild and McCandless’s incentive to go into the wild.
