Jennifer Rodriguez Compare and Contrast A wise person once told me that there are two types of men in this world: the humble, uplifting men, and the conceited men that feel the need to push other people down in order to succeed. The stories “Johnny Lingo’s Eight Cow Wife” and “My Last Duchess” both contain strong male characters whose personalities drive the storyline and affect the outcome of the story; however the two men cause very different outcomes because of their very different personalities. The authors of each story use character, symbolism, and theme to show how a man’s personality can affect everyone around him, no matter what the circumstance may be. One way that the authors of both stories show just how much people can be affected by the personality of a man is by creating strong leading men as the main characters. The main character of “Johnny Lingo’s Eight Cow Wife” is named Johnny Lingo, who is a rich, smart businessman who has a caring heart towards the one he loves. The main character in “My Last Duchess” however, is an wealthy Duke who owns much land and believes that his duchess should have been more proud of the name he had given her while she was alive. One of the striking similarities about the two men is that their names held honor and recognition. However, it is their attitudes toward the people around them and their significant others that differ greatly. Johnny Lingo is humble, and is willing to sacrifice eight cows in order to make the love of his life feel beautiful and confident. On the other hand, the Duke considers himself higher in importance than everyone else, and found it silly and unattractive when his duchess smiled and gave thanks to everyone. Both Johnny Lingo and the Duke are compelling characters, and we care about them

Moore (Ret) and Joseph L. Galloway. These two books focus on the Vietnam War and more importantly the 1st Cavalry Divisions time in the Vietnam war. Both books are autobiographies written from a soldier’s point of view and both offer a unique look at life for different types of soldiers during the Vietnam War during the same period of time (1965) and even during the same Battles (Ia Drang Valley). Chickenhawk, by Mason, is written from the point of view of a huey “slick” pilot in the army’s first use of air assault or airmobile techniques. The book begins with Mason starting his career in the army and his transition through flight school and eventually making his way to the Vietnam War. The majority of the book focuses on his time in Vietnam and the daily life of an Army Huey pilot in the 1st Cav as well as his transfer to the “Blue Stars”, which occurs at the end of his tour. The last few chapters of the book discuss his time after Vietnam. “We Were Soldiers Once...and Young: Ia Drang - The Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam,” by Moore and Galloway is written from the point of view of Moore, an army infantry Lieutenant Colonel and Galloway...

...English composition compare and contrast essay Point by point arrangment essay 13march 2012 Introduction: There are several reasons why having a college degree versus not having a college degree can greatly benefit you when doing a job search and wanting to apply for higher paying jobs. Having a degree can open many doors of opportunity to you as without it you may run into a road block. In the following essay I will compare and contrast the reasons for this.. First diffrence with having a college degree: On the job you are applying for when it says college degree perfered well when you go to apply for it having that degree puts you ahead of consideration for the job compared to those that do not have it. Having a college degree is liking having years of expereince in a job even if you don’t . ...Compare and Contrast Essay The life of the horse in the story “Am I Blue”, and the life of a slave are very different, but the same in many ways. They are the same because the horse was owned by someone just like the slave was. The horse was also defenseless just as well as a slave was. Both the slave and the horse were both very unhappy. They were both sad, and upset, and hurt. They both wanted to be free but couldn’t be. Both horses and slaves were whipped and told what to do. Also when the the mother horse was taken away from the male horse it’s the same as when a baby is taken away from a woman slave. Both the horse and a slave do not have much freedom, and over worked and taken advantage of. They are different because a horse is an animal and a slave is human. A slave can do more for themselves rather than a horse. Horses can endure more pain then the pain of slavery. Horses are a lot stronger than a slave. Slaves on the other hand never gave up. When a slave falls they get ‘right back up and keep going. A horse if it breaks its leg it’s done for. Its owner will most likely just shoot it and continue on. A slave has to be taken care a little bit more than a horse would. Horses can go a long while without eating. Slaves can only go a couple days. There are many different reasons why these two are the same and why they are different. These were only a...

...Chelsi Howell John Mattern English 11 October 24, 2013 Compare and Contrast Essay Reading the two letters, there was many similarities and differences. The two letters are a like in many ways as to being different in many ways. The first letter was about Rev. Samson Occum and the second letter was about John Adams. The letter to reverend Samson Occum explained the freedom of slavery. It talked about respecting the African Americans because everyone should be treated equal. In the letter it stated that giving the justification of rights was like implanting a principle in gods’ life. God giving second chances to show that he cares about people no matte what because he understands how people make mistakes. The letter to John Adams was about love and religion just like the first letter. Each letter involved a strict religion. Even though the first letter talked about freedom and the second letter talked about power and liberty, it all comes from god and what they think god would like because god doesn’t like ugly. There were many different things about each letter. The letter to John Adams was saying how the woman had more right then the men. It’s hard to explain what was going on in the letter because it went straight to the point. Didn’t really break it down to the point where I could understand what happened. Basically it stated how the presidents didn’t care about the woman. The women were forced to take care of their kids, even though it’s their job already. Abigail...

...Bruna DaSilva ENG 071, Basic Writing Fall 2012 Compare and Contrast Essay Professor Arthur Harris People are always looking for their vacation time. There are many places to chose. The places people choose to take a vacation are the beaches and the mountains in my opinion. Both places can offer fun activities. The beach has activities the mountain cannot give, and the mountain has activities the beach do not. The mountain and the beach are very different. Climate is very important to enjoy any vacation. If someone does not like cold weather, she might have a hard time in the mountains. The cold climate in mountains is the first thing to enjoy it, and the climate also determines the type of activity it offers. Snow boarding, mountain climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and skiing are some activities that people can enjoy when they go to the mountains. There are many places that have mountains where people can go and have a great time. Canada is a country that has many mountains where people can go and have fun. Warm climate is one of the most important thing that the beach has. Sun and fun are two things that can describe the beach. The sea and the warm climate determine activities at the beach. People can swim, play volleyball, play soccer, etc. At many beaches, there are discos and restaurants where people can dance or party at night. Mexico has many beautiful beaches to visit. Acapulco and Cancun are two of the most famous beaches in the world. It doesn’t matter...

...Issa Haddad Jason Sebacher ENGL102 27 November 2012 Compare/Contrast Essay In Dylan Thomas', “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”, he entreats his father to not succumb quietly to death. He uses the metaphor, "the dying of the light" (3) to illustrate that he feels death to be a destructive power seeking to put out the "light" which is the human life force. That he feels this destruction should not be passively accepted is first shown when he states, "old age should burn and rave at the close of day" (2). He employs the metaphor, "close of day" (2) to show he feels death is an end to human consciousness as he knows it. He also uses "old age" (2) to personify the person/people who should fight death, and "burn and rave" (2) to indicate the fight. He uses examples of different types of men resisting death to add to his argument that life should not be given up lightly. "Wise men" (4) do not "go gentle" because "their words had forked no lightning" (5). Another metaphor, meaning that the words they speak receive no notice, therefor there is still more recognition to achieve before death's finality. "Good men" (7), realizing (with the metaphor/personification) that their "frail deeds might have danced in a green bay" (8), also fight against dying. The use of "green bay" (8) as a metaphor for the inevitable "sea" of mortality shows that they realize their actions in life may not yet be enough to secure them an illustrious place in human history and remembrance. "Wild men"...

...Ryan Staggemeier Kristy Tenbus ENGL 1020 September 17, 2011 Compare and Contrast Essay The professional golfers association contains many talented players throughout the world; two of the most known players are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Growing up as a child I always was watching the golf channel with my father and the players he always told me to look out for on the top of the leaderboard were Tiger and Phil. Truth be told my father was right almost every tournament I saw at least one of those two players in the top ten. They both have green jackets from the masters and can both claim the title of the U.S open champion at one point. Although both PGA players Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are outstanding golfers with similarities and differences I believe that over all Phil Mickelson is a better player than Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods turned pro in the year of 1996 and has shocked the world ever since either with the breaking news of his devastating actions or about how he birdied the 18th hole to go into another 18 hole playoff with Rocco Mediate in the U.S open. Over the past few years Tiger has slipped and has made mistakes which resulted in him losing respect of his fans and of his golfing equals. Tiger the man isn’t really someone you really want to look up to but Tiger the golfer shows many ways to be respectful and how to treat people on the golf course. I myself have taken the way Tiger Woods plays into perspective with my own game. He taught me to play with...

It is the new modern age era where social sites make it hard just to pick one. They have different security features, altered creativeness, and ways to may everything simple. Beforehand, we chat about how Facebook and Instagram are not the same, let’s indicate the exciting connection between the two. Facebook owns Instagram, and that will help find then connect with Facebook friends on Instagram. This will also allow the user to link their Instagram posts to Facebook. Also, Facebook has friends and Instagram has followers. Nonetheless the key connection amongst the two stops here, so we can get down to business and point out some of the main differences now. Facebook and Instagram are similar but also very different in their own ways. Facebook is the big brother in this family and their active users are extremely high. With Facebook someone can block a person but the timeline gives more information about them to other people. For example, the TV show Catfish expose people on the internet, "catfish" is an individual who makes a fake profile on social...

...Compare and contrast the strategies of Carrefour and Walmart in the Chinese market Although the whole world has been affected by global recession, China’s economy still grows in a rapid rate compared with other countries’. Furthermore, the expansion of China’s retail market has attracted world’s largest retailers, Walmart and Carrefour, to pile in. The expansion strategies of the two global retailers seem to play a crucial role in the competition in China. Thus both similarities and differences of strategies are worth considering and will be respectively analyzed in the essay. One of the most significant similarities of Walmart and Carrefour’s strategies is that both of them learn about the diversity of regions and customers. Ed Chan, the Walmart China’s CEO, pointed out that not only income level, but also customer preferences were affected by the regional diversity (McKinsey Quarterly, 2009). It suggests that from coastal area to inland regions, the economy is less developed and the income level is accordingly lower. As a result, customer preferences vary from the eastern to the western part of China (McKinsey Quarterly, 2009). Similarly, Carrefour treats coastal and inland customers respectively to adapt to region differences in China. For instance, live fish is displayed to customers in fresh area but frozen fish is sold to people in vast regions according to the diversity of their preferences (Child, 2006). Another similarity is that in addition to coastal cities...

...HIV/AIDS AND CANCER DONNETTA HARRIS UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX LEILANI CLARK COM/155-UNIVERSITY COMPOSITION AND COMMUNICATION Millions of people all over the world have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS or cancer, and in some cases, both. These two diseases are both very deadly and can cause other problems within a person’s body. HIV/AIDS and cancer are chronic diseases that affect the human body, although there are some advantages with HIV/AIDS compared to cancer. Even though there are treatments available for both of these diseases, unfortunately, a cure has yet to be found. HIV/AIDS is another name for Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. HIV is the virus that ultimately leads to AIDS, and AIDS is the disease that causes death. They are not the same. People can live for years and years before getting AIDS. There are three main stages of HIV infection. These stages are acute infection, clinical latency, and AIDS. The acute infection usually follows the initial contraction of the HIV virus. Most individuals may experience flu-like symptoms. Other symptoms may include, but are not limited to, enlarged lymph nodes which may become tender, rash, and sores that may appear in the mouth or genital area. The next stage of HIV is clinical latency, which is also referred to as asymptomatic HIV or chronic HIV. It...

...Dallas Floyd Jordan English 1302.4062 30 March 2012 Essay There are extreme self-esteem issues around the world. From boys to men, girls to women, everyone is affected by their, or someone else’s, comments towards how they look that day. When looking at “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy and “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde, one must decide whether they take criticism from others, or if they critique themselves to the point of no return. In “Barbie Doll” the girl takes shots from her peers about her “…great big nose and fat legs” up to the point where she cuts her nose and legs off and dies (1. 6). But in “Hanging Fire” the girl puts so much pressure on herself to conform to the sociological norm that she begins to think suicidal thoughts, wondering if she “will live long enough/to grow up” (3. 32-33). The mental aspect of self-esteem can have two categories, bringing others down and one bringing themselves down. When younger, one’s mindset is caring about what others think about to fit in with the “cool group.” But leading up to the teenage years, one starts to care less of what others say and judge themselves, which leads to one feeling uncomfortable in their skin. The criticism from peers and critical thoughts of oneself could lead to suicidal thoughts or worse, death. If one separates self-esteem into...

...Sister Flowers / Someone’s Mother In this essay we will discuss the comparison and contrast of two stories, Sister Flowers and Someone’s Mother. One of the easiest comparisons is that both of these stories were written in the first person by the authors. In Sister Flowers the author tells a tale of the struggle she had dealing with a traumatic event. In the same way, Someone’s Mother tells of the struggle the author had in leaving an elderly woman lost and alone. Also, both stories show a person’s genuine concern to help someone in need. Sister Flowers deals with a woman helping a child to find her voice in life. Likewise, Someone’s Mother shares the story of a woman who helps a hitchhiker who has seemed to have lost her way. Though both stories showed similarities they also were different in many ways. One of the ways in which the two stories contrast is that both took place in different parts of the country and in different eras. Sister Flowers is set in Arkansas in around the 30’s; however, Someone’s Mother was further north in New York and took place in 2007. Another difference between the stories was they both had different agendas. Someone’s Mother was more of a story dealing with the characters compassion. In Sister Flowers you felt the story leaning more towards the inner struggle of the character. In conclusion, you can see that there are many similarities as well as differences in these stories. Both were thoroughly enjoyable and should be recommended for all to...
