“On the page headed May 17, 2155, she wrote, Today Tommy and I found a real book!” Can you imagine living in a world without a paperback or living on a different planet where it rains twenty-four seven. Well this is how the two authors Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov set up their characters in the books “All Summer in a day” and “the Fun They Had”. The authors used lots of literary elements to reveal the setting and set the tone of the story. They also used figures of speech, sensory details, and dialog to add more depth to their stories. Plus the authors used details to affect the mood and atmosphere of the two stories. The Two stories “All Summer in a day” and “the Fun They Had” have lots of differences and similarities such as they both portray the future in a sad and depressing way with little chance of contentment. For Example, in “All Summer in a day” the kids don't believe in the sun or what Margot tells them about …show more content…
Bradbury uses lots of similes, metaphors and personification to describe what the sun and what the characters might be comparable to. For instance, the children compared the sunny outdoors to “a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of Flesh like weed, wavering, flowering in this brief spring. It was the color of rubber and Ash, this jungle, from the many years without Sun. It was like the color of stones and white cheeses and ink, and it was the color of the Moon.” Another difference in the sories was how the setting affected the kids differently. The setting caused the children to become very depressed, lonely, and very mean to one and another which caused lots of tension in the story. For example, all the children were rude and always bullied Margot because they envied her, they also were impolite to their elders. The last variation in the sories was how “All Summer in a Day” ended super abruptly leaving the reader with lots of mystery, which was a different style that Isaac Asimov did not

A Separate Peace

...A Separate Peace In the 1940’s, World War II had a huge impact on the everyday lives of Americans. Many people had to sacrifice money, supplies, food and even lives to contribute to the war effort. However, the characters in John Knowles’ “A Separate Peace” appear to be sheltered from the influences of the international conflicts as a result of attending an all-boys boarding school. The novel focuses on the friendship between Finny and Gene, two friends who bonded during the carefree summer sessions at the Devon School. When the winter approaches, the students find themselves having to deal with stricter administration and rules. The new order and increasing impact of the war causes the students to stress and worry. In an effort to relieve the misery, Finny decides to organize a winter carnival for the pupils. Although the festivities of the winter carnival suggest that the boys have been successful in creating a separate peace, Knowles’ use of war imagery in describing the setting, prizes, and the boy’s behavior suggests that this peace is illusory. Although the setting of the carnival seems serene at first, a closer look at the descriptive language reveals that the Devon school is in a war-like state. The brutal winter causes the students to have a depressing view of their school life. The despair that the cold weather has brought with it causes Gene to loathe winter, he compares it to a “corrupt…conqueror” who’s presence has “destroyed everything”. In spite of getting ready...

...waters, the beauty of its coastlines, the Agricultural land, and the reaches of the Employment opportunities, all in contrast makes California more desirable place to live than Florida. Introduction California is one of the best and desirable places to live in the world. In the winter of 1987, I was living in Florida city, one morning I got up to go to work, the day was very nice from one minute to the next the sky started to get dark, darker clouds cover the sky. People at the trailer park was so fearful, they started to run to shelter places, they were right that day, it rained so hard, and it was lightning and thundering, the winds were so strong that, it could take a tree up from his roots. The people who did not have enough time to run to the shelter place, suffer very big loss, the next day I went to the town to look around, the little city was devastating, windows from business broken, trees were laid on the streets, cars were upside down, and broken homes all destroyed, it was a disaster that I will never like to re-live again, and it was a big experience in my life. ...Marisa Cipolla Mrs. Fader Day 2 Block 1 January 29, 2013 All Summer in a Day 1) At the Beginning of the story how did the students feel? Find two details from the story the prove your thought. Explain. All of the children were extremely excited for the sun to come. They knew it only happened once every seven years. The last time almost everyone saw the sun was when they were two years old and don’t remember anything about it or what if felt like, or looked like. They believed the rain would stop and they could finally see the sun. 2) Explain how Margot’s experience of the sun is different from the experience of all of the other children on Venus. Find at least one specific detail to explain. Margot has a different experience with the sun, because she was born on Earth and brought to Venus later in her life, all the other kids had been born there. So Margot had seen the sun every day until she was around four years old. For Example, “...She remembered the sun and the way the sun was and the sky was when she was four in Ohio. And they, they had been on Venus all their lives, and they had only been two years old when the last sun came out...” She had been able to see and feel the sun for four years of her life while all the other kids only saw it and felt it for one hour seven years ago. She is the only one who knows and remembers what it looks and feels like. 3) What Point is made about Margot when the story says that rain had “washed the blue from her eyes”...

...classes were the easiest, and they were completely wrong. Sadly it was back to reality, no more staying up late and sleeping in with not a worry about what I was going to do that day. Now I had a schedule to follow Monday through Friday that involved homework, studying, writing essays, and soccer practice. It was seven thirty in the morning on the first day of school, which was the earliest I had been up in 3 months and I was already working on an assignment. I never would have guessed my first day of classes would involve graded assignments and homework. I assumed it would be full of listening to the teacher explain the ten page long syllabus that only comes in use during the first week of school, while I daydream about my summer, trying to fight my eyelids from closing. But the assumption I made about the typical first day of high school was completely wrong and it changed my outlook on high school for the rest of the year. It’s seven thirty in the morning, the sun is barely out and I’m already sweating through my t-shirt. Luckily I am not the only one, as I look around the classroom everyone looks miserable and fatigued. You could tell everyone wanted to be anywhere but at Anderson High School. The bell had just rung and our English teacher introduced himself and it seemed like it was going to be a fun year. Mr. Ger was dressed professional, wearing an Anderson golf team polo with khaki pants. I expected him to hand out a syllabus for the class to go over but instead he gave...

I’m self-conscious get easily embarrassed and often wonder how people think of me. Growing up, I went through a lot of verbal abuse form my parents. I ran away from home once when I was really young because I couldn’t stand my dad. Ever since I was little, they’ve always had high expectations for me and my sisters-especially in school. They always wanted me to do things their way and pretty much had everything set for me. They sent me to go to school in China when I was about 8 years old even when I didn’t want to go. They would give me lectures if I didn’t earn an “A” in one of my classes. After high school, I wanted to go to culinary school to study something that I really enjoyed but they demanded me to go to a university like most people did and get a “real” education. I felt like they never really supported me emotionally throughout my whole life. If I was having problems or went through a bad day, I definitely don’t turn to my parents first. I remember onetime I try talking to my mom about an issue I was going through and she just made it seem like it was my fault- which wasn’t what I needed to hear. As a kid, they were always...

Double Trouble

...One may be shy, while the other loves meeting new people. Discovering why identical twins differ—despite having the same DNA—could reveal a great deal about all of us. By Peter Miller Photograph by Martin Schoeller Every summer, on the first weekend in August, thousands of twins converge on Twinsburg, Ohio, a small town southeast of Cleveland named by identical twin brothers nearly two centuries ago. They come, two by two, for the Twins Days Festival, a three-day marathon of picnics, talent shows, and look-alike contests that has grown into one of the world's largest gatherings of twins. Dave and Don Wolf of Fenton, Michigan, have been coming to the festival for years. Like most twins who attend, they enjoy spending time with each other. In fact, during the past 18 years, the 53-year-old truckers, whose identical beards reach down to their chests, have driven more than three million miles together, hauling everything from diapers to canned soup from places like Seattle, Washington, to Camden, New Jersey. While one sits at the wheel of their diesel Freightliner, the other snoozes in the bunk behind him. They listen to the same country gospel stations on satellite radio, share the same Tea Party gripes about big government, and munch on the same road diet of pepperoni, apples, and mild cheddar cheese. On their days off they go hunting or fishing together. It's a way of life that suits them. "Must be a twins thing," Don says. This afternoon at the festival the brothers...

BEBE is one of my favorite store’s to shop because I love their work clothes, and dresses. For this reason I decided to pick Bebe store to conduct research of the company’s success by interviewing their store manager. When I came in the store last weekend a very nice looking lady with a beautiful long white summer dress and red lips approached me and asked me what I was looking for? I immediately told her I wanted to speak to the manager to ask her a few questions about the store business retail strategy. The lady smiled and told me she could answer my questions. I was impressed by her kindness of taking me to her back office to take a few minutes of her time to answer my questions. This interview gave me insight of the company history, strategy, and many more relevant factors that attribute to company becoming world's top fashion retailers. A. History of the Company As I mention earlier I interviewed Bebe store manager: Jane Altholz to learn about the company history and business strategies. ...is so much better? This is one of many problems in the current game retail industry we will be exploring. The Steam Client is a digital game retailer and a multiplayer and communications platform created by Valve Corporation in 2003. Steam has over 1500 games available and over 54 million active users and is estimated to control roughly 70% of the digital game market. Steam will be the future of game retail and it is positioning itself perfectly to do so. This paper will discuss the current state of the game industry and how and why it has gotten there. From there it will focus on how games are sold today and how retailers are positioning themselves for the future. Lastly the paper will dissect the Steam client and all it has to offer; specifically comparing it to current physical and digital retailers. As technology goes digital, entertainment media seems to be stuck in the physical past; at least for the time being. This is changing rapidly as more and more gamers are realizing the benefits of digital distribution. DFC Intelligence is forecasting that boxed retail will have declined from $29 billion in 2011 to $24 billion in 2016. Meanwhile, the market for digital distribution will grow $15 billion, to US$39 billion in 2016, up from US$24 billion in 2012 (Okalow b, 2012). The game industry has been in a slump for several years now (partially due to the recessionstate reasons: 1,2,3); however, the upward trend of digital sales gives hope...
