...Comparing Jazz Dance and Hip-Hop Dance The purpose of this paper is to compare Jazz dance styles and Hip-Hop dance styles. The author will discuss the forms of the two dances styles as well as the past and present interpretations of the dances. There are many forms of Jazz dance including Swing, Cakewalk, Black Bottom, Charleston, and Lindy Hop. Although many of these forms of dance are commonly danced to jazz music, many performers also use Hip-Hop music for this type of dance. Jazz dance technique focuses on stylistic leaps and executing sharp moves. Common jazz moves include the catwalk, the ball change, the straddle split leap and the moonwalk. Maintaining good posture is an important element in jazz dance in order to maintain balance and poise while dancing. In order to complete jazz dance steps, a jazz dancer must be flexible, have a strong core and defined muscle tone in the legs. Both Jazz dance and modern dance techniques are based on the basics of the old ballet tradition. To excel in jazz dance, the dancer must master ballet techniques (Personal Communication, T. Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald both did a wonderful job in their own right on “Love is here to Stay”. Unfortunately there is only one first dance at a wedding so in this case they can’t play both. Even though Sinatra and Fitzgerald are two very different singing styles, I think there were many similarities to the approach each singer took in singing this song. But, in this situation there were more differences than not. More differences in the two songs make it harder to pick one song to use. In Love is here to stay, the lyrics are a dead giveaway towards the attitude of love in this song. In this short song, the lyrics are describing how long love will last. Therefore the composer compared love to material things that will only be phases. Saying, this love will outlast all of those items. When comparing the two singer’s attitudes towards these lyrics while singing, I think Ella Fitzgerald did a better job of conveying with her voice the true meaning of these lyrics. As Ella Fitzgerald sang the song I could get a sense of lasting love by the tone in her voice. There are two; one came out in 1984 (directed by Herbert Ross starring Kevin Bacon), and the other one in 2011 (directed by Craig Brewer starring Kenny Wormald). Music and characters are very similar, but the dance moves and time frame are different in both Footloose movies. The first thing noticeable is the difference in the time eras from one movie to the other. In the 1984 movie, the game of chicken is introduced when Ren is challenged to play chicken on farm tractors on a narrow road. Ren is driving one tractor and Chuck is driving the other going toward one another until one tractor goes into the ditch. Now in the 2011 movie, Ren and Chuck play chicken using derby busses to play the game, by racing in a figure eight (with four busses total making sure to not go too fast or too slow). The end is when one of the busses catches on fire, as Ren jumps from the bus, and crashes into the other bus. However two of these men were perhaps the most important of all - George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. While both of these men were born in Germany, the details of each of their employment in the musical profession includes vast differences in both the method by which they acquired their influences and the countries in which they held positions. He starts off praising Lil Wayne’s style and his so called “moth butterfly thing”. But then goes into a more sarcastic bashing of his new album. It is obvious that he greatly dislikes his new album that he is reviewing. The style of this review was very casual, which fits the style of the type of people who would buy his album. You can see that his review is casual when looking at the sarcastic tone of the review in general. You can also see that the style of his writing is casual by looking at how the reviewer mentions the more crude examples of Lil Wayne’s work. In order for zcamp to write his review, he had to have listened to the entire album he is reviewing and know of Lil Wayne’s other albums to compare. Since he compares the album he is reviewing to Lil Wayne’s previous works, he had to know what his other albums sound like.
