In The Nick Adams Stories by Earnest Hemmingway and 3:10 to Yuma by James Mangold, Dan Evans and Nick Adams are both struggling to become the noble savage. To be a noble savage they must accept death, be able to survive alone, and be isolated. Nick tries to follow his father's code, known as the hero code. It involves grace under pressure, tacking action, and accepting death. However, Nick is not able to be a noble savage because he is trying to follow his father's code and not his own code. In 3:10 to Yuma, Dan Evans fails to be become the noble savage because he cannot survive on his own. Instead his son, William Evans, has the potential to become the noble savage from the guidance of his father figures. In order for Nick and William to become the noble savage they must be able to exhibit the traits of one as well as beat their own internal struggle. By being the noble savage they can care from themselves and for others.

The noble savage must accept death, be able to survive alone, and be isolated. On the way to being a noble savage, their fathers influence both characters. Nick tries to follow his father's code, known as the hero code. The hero code comprises of grace under pressure, tacking action, and accepting death. Unlike Nick, William Evans has two father figures. Dan Evans, who fails to be the noble savage, gives William his humanity. Ben Wade, who is the ignoble savage, gives William his survival ability. In the end both characters are able to become the noble savage. Like the noble savage who follows a code, at De Smet Jesuit High School students follow a code.
