In Turner and hooch the dog, was used for trying to find the one that killed hooch's `owner. the characteristics of hooch would be very big and strong also fast and mean looking but was very nice when scot spent time with him. But scaring other people with hoochs face really came handy in the movie like when hooch was looking out the window and saw the guy that killed amos and started chasing after the killer.

In Marley and me, the reason they got marley was to entertain john's wife while he was at work because she quit her job.
