Aadhaar - India's Unique Indetification

...Aadhaar: India’s ‘Unique Identification’ System In our politics, we have yet to tap into our new language of hope. For this to be mirrored in our political institutions it requires us to imagine an India that rests not on the struggles of our past, but on the promise and challenges of the future. It requires us to shape systems and policies that give people the ability to travel in search of work, to educate their children and to tap into economic growth.1 — Nandan Nilekani Nandan Nilekani, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), sipped his coffee while thinking about how to reply to the journalist badgering him and his core team about UIDAI’s challenges. “Will you actually be able to deliver ‘unique identification’ to every Indian resident?” asked the journalist. It was August 30, 2012, three years after the government of India (GoI) had approved the UIDAI project plan. In that time, UIDAI had chalked up some victories. 190 million people had been enrolled within two years of the initial rollout in September 2010. The Australian and Indonesian governments were studying the UIDAI system to adapt it for themselves. Yet some were skeptical that UIDAI would meet its interim goal to cover 600 million of India’s 1.2 billion residents by 2014, and whether the time, cost, and effort were justified. Nilekani responded, “175 million Indians have received a letter in the post giving them a 12-digit number.” India had the largest number of post offices...

Women

...12:06 Page 1 WOMEN, GENDER AND WORK People are not defined solely by their work, nor is it possible to ignore the effects of factors outside the workplace on a person's status at work. To seek equality at work without seeking equality in the larger society – and at home – is illusory. Thus an examination of the issues surrounding women, gender and work must be holistic. That means considering the role of productive work in life as a whole and the distribution of unpaid work as well as the myriad questions relating to employment. This important anthology brings together the thinking of leading philosophers, economists and lawyers on this complex subject. Selected recent articles from the multidisciplinary International Labour Review are assembled for the first time to illuminate questions such as how we should define equality, what equal opportunity means and what statistics tell us about differences between men and women at work, how the family confronts globalization and what is the role of law in achieving equality. There is an examination of policy – to deal with sexual harassment and wage inequality, for example, as well as part-time work, the glass ceiling, social security, and much more. A major reference on the best of current research and analysis on gender roles and work. Martha Fetherolf Loutfi has been Editor-in-Chief of the International Labour Review, a Senior Economist for the Brandt Commission and in the ILO’s Employment and Development...

Starbucks

...the annual ritual was steeped in Starbucks tradition. But for the iconic coffee company, this had been no ordinary year. Starbucks got its start as a Seattle-based coffee roaster in 1971. At this time, the larger coffee market was dominated by supermarket brands such as Folgers and Maxwell House, and per-capita coffee consumption in the U.S. was on the decline.3 During the next two decades, however, sellers of specialty, high-quality coffee beans began to attract a niche following.4 In 1987, entrepreneur Howard Schultz bought Starbucks with an eye toward introducing European-style coffee culture to the American market. Under Schultz’s aegis, Starbucks spread the gospel of high-quality, customized coffee drinks to urban areas around the country. The enthusiasm of Starbucks customers helped the company grow its revenues from about $10 million in 1988 to more than $1.3 billion ten years later.5 By 2007, the coffee company earned $9.4 billion in revenues through a network of more than 15,000 stores worldwide.6 Starbucks performance record since its 1992 IPO made it, for many years, a darling of the investment community. Between 1995 and 2005, the company’s stock rose from about $2 to more than $30, and it...
