Abstract
Should college athletes get paid? Does it teach kids that they do not have to have a job to make money, and that they can just do whatever they like because they know they are too good and will not be let off? I find this topic interesting because I want to play a sport in college.
I know that a full ride scholarship would pay for the athlete’s college tuition, food, housing, and their books. I also know that multiple hours are spent by the athlete practicing throughout the day and year. Athletes are expected by their coaches to practice before the season starts and after the season so that they can be the best that they can be for the team. With that being said, how do athletes manage their time with practice, school, and a social life? My intended audience is for anyone who is interested in sports or the benefits college athletes receive from a scholarship. Any athletes might find it interesting what the process is to get a scholarship, whether it is high school students or college. More specifically this would be beneficial to any high school student or parent who would like to know about college athletic scholarships.

Compensation of College Athletes There has been an ongoing debate continuing since the early nineteen hundreds on whether college athletes should get paid. This argument comes from the coaches, the athlete’s parents, and the athletes themselves arguing that universities make money off of the players and the players, in turn, do not receive any money from that. For example, during the basketball tournament, March Madness, universities make millions of dollars off of the players and the fans that come to watch the games and the players do not get any of this money. Although it can be argued that the players do in fact get paid by scholarships. The NCAA, National College Athletic Association, is a nonprofit association that organizes the athletic programs of many colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. This association was founded by Theodore Roosevelt in March 1906 in order to protect student-athletes. The NCAA continues to do this as well as focus on the athletics and the academic excellence of the athletes. The NCAA is made up of three membership classifications that all have their own rules: Division Ι, ΙΙ, and ΙΙΙ. The rules for each division are concerning the athlete’s personnel, amateurism, recruiting, eligibility, benefits, financial aid, and their practice seasons. As long as the NCAA has been around the athletes have never actually been paid with money, it has always been in scholarships. Current president of the NCAA Mark Emmert believes that it would be a bad idea to pay college athletes. He said that most university presidents think that it would be turning the athletes into “professionals.” Athletes work hard every day to be the best that they can be and the best that they can all be together as a team. Every time that a player steps out on the court or field they risk getting career ending injuries. College athletes should be paid because they do not have time for jobs, the college makes money for their work, and America is built on a free market system. College athletes have very limited free time. During most of the player’s free time, or the time that is not spent in classroom or practicing, they are going to be doing their homework that they have for their classes. All athletes are required by NCAA rules to maintain a specific grade point average. This grade point average varies depending on which division that the athletes play for. If the athlete does not sustain the required standards then they will not be eligible to play. With all of these requirements the athletes have to uphold, they rarely have any time for them, let alone have time to go to a job. Since most athletes will not have time for a job how are they expected to have any money? Although some athletes do have a meal plan that is part of their scholarship, others do not. Some players may come from poor families and are expected to pay for their own food and other necessities. Even players that are on a full ride scholarship still need money to pay for things as simple as soap, clothes, or gas. While some may argue that the athletes are being paid by getting a free education, others would disagree and say that it is not enough because it does not cover many things that are needed. Colleges and universities make millions of dollars annually from college athletes. For example, think about how much money the University of Georgia makes just from one home football game. The University of Georgia’s stadium, Stanford Stadium, holds 92,756 people. All of the people that attend the game have paid for a ticket to watch the athletes play and will buy food and drinks throughout the game. The money that the fans pay to get into the game and the money that they spend during the game goes to the university’s athletic program. None of the money that is made during these games is given to the players. If the fans are coming to the game to watch the athletes then the athletes should be entitled to at least a small percentage of the money earned by the university. Since the United States of America is built on a free enterprise system then college athletes should be paid. Although a free enterprise system should allow a person to earn a profit with limited regulations, the NCAA is not allowing that to happen for the players. The NCAA’s regulations are too strict in this aspect. For example, the NCAA can make money just by using an athlete’s name. Look at all of the video games and jerseys that the NCAA sells just because it has the player’s names on it. They are using the player’s name to make money and the players are not getting any of the money. The NCAA should not be allowed use the athlete’s name if the athlete is not receiving any of the profit from it. Also, college athletes are prohibited to be in any commercials or to sign any autographs. The athletes should have the opportunity to earn money from this if they so desire. The time and effort that athletes put into their sport is taken seriously. These athletes treat their sport like it is their job. They work really hard every day so that they can make a positive difference on the team. Some athletes get “paid” in an education, but if an athlete comes from a poor family their education money is not going to help them buy food for their family or themselves. Also if an athlete borrows money from someone to help buy food, whether it is for their family or themselves, they will be suspended. An example of an athlete who did this is Kansas State’s basketball star Jamar Samuels. Samuels was suspended from a game after asking an old basketball coach for money for food. Samuels and the coach both knew that this was a violation of the rules, but Samuels had no money to get food. Believe it or not, some people do not want to go to college for an education, they just want to go to play a sport. If these people are being offered a free education it is basically worthless to them, especially if they were not planning on attending college in the first place. It would be just as useless to give a free education to someone who is not smart enough or willing to do anything with it as it would be to give a homeless man a free television. In both situations the compensation is of no value to the receiver. I believe that college athletes should be paid but I understand why the NCAA and the colleges may not want to pay them. Athlete’s main goal when attending college should be to get an education. An Athlete is entitled to a free education and while they are playing their sport at their college they are being exposed to professional contracts. If the athlete signs a contract to play as a professional then they will be playing for money. Mark Emmert said, “Rather than push college athletes further and further from academics, we need to bring them closer.” While all of this may be true student athletes in college still need money. Some athletes are not on a full ride scholarship so they still need money to buy food. Since they do not have time for a job and the colleges and the NCAA does not give them any partial amount of the money they make, the athletes do not have any money. This has been and will continue to be an underlining problem among college athletes for many years unless some chances are made. In conclusion, college athletes should be entitled to some money. The athletes are the ones who are working and making billions of dollars for the NCAA and the colleges. They should get a percentage of that money that they earn for them, just as if it was someone working a part time job at the college. The athletes should receive the same benefits, and if not they should definitely be able to make money off of their own status of which they have worked hard to earn. I am not saying that they should be entitled to million dollar contracts; I just think that they should be given partial amounts of the money the colleges, universities, and the NCAA obtain. These athletes are not only students but assets to their colleges and conferences. The NCAA is a professional business and the players should be paid like one. The NCAA is a billion dollar business and the players should be allowed to receive a small monetary percentage.

College Athletes and Compensation

...Assignment Five College Athletes and Compensation Professor Adam Lawrence Strayer University June 9, 2013 PART I: PROBLEM The goal of this paper is to focus on evidence that college athletes, specifically, football players should be compensated for the talents they demonstrate on the field; for many reasons. It is well documented that college presidents, coaches, athletic directors often think of athletics as the “front porch” of their campuses (Weaver, 2011), as it relates to college revenues. Weaver further maintains that college athletes, especially football players, are needed to generate the revenues to build both and support a winning football team, and athletics department. And historically colleges rely on ticket sales, game programs, and advertising revenues, to do so. Additionally, coaches’ salary and facility renovations also are factor in terms of colleges and universities needing to generate revenues as well. But before the former can be brought to fruition colleges must first persuade the most talented athletes to their school. What criteria do colleges and universities utilize when recruiting athletes with regard to talent, academics, finances, and student population? Additionally, what perks are colleges and universities offering these athletes to entice them at a minimum to the said front porch? Let’s start by first exploring how colleges and universities generate revenues. First, warning sign (problem) is that billions in annual revenues...

College Athletes Deserve Compensation

...College Athletes Deserve Compensation Collegiate athletes have been around for centuries. In its origin, college sports were only offered for recreational purpose, but now collegiate athletics is a multimillion-dollar industry. Some of the highest paid state employees are college football coaches. College athletics is a lucrative business. Sadly everyone but the athletes benefit from the commercialization of college athletics. Collegiate athletes are constantly being exploited by universities especially when it comes to merchandise. Athletes should be able to make profits off merchandise with their names and numbers on them. Collegiate athletes should also be able to market themselves by partaking in sponsorships and autograph signings and acquire profits if they choose from sales of their own jerseys. College athletes are influential to many people whether young or old. Things that show the effects of the players' influence are jerseys. Jerseys are a players’ entire identity. It's who they are. Currently, colleges are allowed to sell a jersey with a players number only. Most schools try to avoid putting a players name to avoid lawsuits and other altercations. When a...

Should College Athletes Receive Monetary Compensation

...Running head: MANAGEMENT MANAGEMENT: should college athletes receive monetary compensation? Name Course name Instructor’s name Date of submission Introduction The exploits of student-athletes in sports have variously been advanced as generating a lot of dollars in forms of revenues for their respective institutions, which has generally raised the question as to why they shouldn’t be compensated for their sporting prowess. As noted by Kaufmann (2007), student-athletes generate tens of millions of dollars for their respective athletic departments and ideally then should be reimbursed. However, as per the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletics Associations (NCAA), athletes are not supposed to receive any commercial use of their personas and likenesses and are indeed not expected to gain any monetary compensation for their sporting engagements. This has generally been interpreted to mean that they cannot enter into agreements for endorsements in their sporting activities as has been the case with professional engagements. Instead, students are expected to benefit from the payment for tuition fees from their sporting activities. The borne of contention however has been that the universities they play for can enter into agreements of endorsements or other forms of commercial engagements and contracts by utilizing the players identities (Mueller, n.d). This would posit that students surrender their rights of publicity to the universities, raising both legal...

College Athletics

...College Athlete Compensation: Primary Research Review Phillip Richard Cross Oakland University Rochester, MI Abstract This primary research paper explores the topic of college athletics, and if student athletes receive fair compensation for their sporting services. As to how this question was answered, it was conducted with two separate interviews. One of them was with Ben Anderson, my former varsity basketball coach, and also Matt Okaiye, a close friend who plays college football at Michigan State. The main findings of this research was that college athletes receive a great deal of fair compensation, as scholarships and publicity are the primary focus to why. For athletic scholarships, we see that the student athletes receive numerous amnesties and benefits that compensate them extremely well. Publicity is the same way, as the athletes have a large amount of attention on them which leads to economic and compensated value. This research will ultimately lead to the final project which will be on the argument that college athletes should not be paid. College Athlete Compensation The notion of paying college athletes has been an ongoing debate for decades. With college sports continuing to gain popularity and revenue increasing for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), people have questioned whether college athletes should be benefited beyond their athletic scholarships. The question is, do college athletes receive fair enough compensation for their services...

Pay for Play- Ethics Paper

...Ethical Analysis of the Student-Athlete Compensation Dilemma Group 2: Julie Burnett Christopher Fincham Revati Kailasam Catherine Kondo Teresa Seim Ethics and Professionalism in Accounting Andrew Dill ACG 6835 Fall 2013 Introduction The college sports industry is a large industry in America which is estimated to produce $797 million dollars for the 2012-13 season (NCAA). Of these millions, not one penny will go to any of the 400,000 plus college athletes under NCAA rules (NCAA). This however, was not always the case. Prior to the formation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1906, student groups frequently hired players without the stipulation that they must also be students at the university (NCAA). Due to these circumstances and poorly regulated play that often led to injuries, the NCAA was established to provide a safe and fair ‘playing field’ for student-athletes. However, today this regulatory board is not seen as beneficial by all members of society, and is especially negatively scrutinized by top performing student-athletes. In 2005, NCAA Football had an estimated total attendance of over 43 million compared to the NFL of over 17 million, while NCAA Basketball had estimated total attendance of over 30 million compared to the NBA of over 21 million (Humphys, 2008). Despite having more viewers, college athletes received no pay while professional players earned millions. This has prompted college athletes to argue that the NCAA regulations...

College Athletes Should Be Paid

...Should college athletes be compensated? There are many people that think athletes should be paid and there are many people that think they should not. Paying college athletes is a controversial topic that many people are against. Millions of dollars are made by the success of these athletes and the teams they play for. Opponents believe athletes should be paid because of their hard work; college athletes receive benefits from their institutions, and the NCAA find paying college athletes a violation. First of all, many opponents surrounding the issue of paying college athletes believe they should be paid. Their theory of paying these athletes is due to their hard work. College athletes put in numerous hours every week preparing for games. The hours they put in come from practice, study hall, conditioning, position meetings, team meetings, and breakfast checks. There are so many things that these athletes are held accountable for that lead up to the whole package of being a college athlete. As important as football is, academics are even more important. The countless hours’ athletes put in on a daily basis for football don’t stop there. Athletes are required to...

...the time of year hundreds of college basketball players take to the floor in hopes of winning a national championship. Millions of fans invest time, money and energy cheering for their favorite teams. Billions of dollars are made by the television and advertising industries, the food and beverage industries and the College and University “industry”. We watch these young men and women play their hearts out never once considering they have classes to study for or calculating the amount of money they make generate. Today’s college athletes or “student-athletes”, as the National Collegiate Athletic Association calls them, are a part of a long time controversy. While they receive scholarships and are allowed to go to college for free, they also have to “work” in practice and games. They are no different than other college students in that they also have to pay for other necessities. Even if a fan wants to help them out in any way like buy them a meal they can’t because it’s a NCAA violation. This is a hot topic especially during the NCAA tournament. Even the popular IPhone application, Instagram has recently put this hot topic on display. This past week, University of Louisville women’s basketball player, Bria Smith posted a picture of an article about this debate. Paying of College Athletes

...Should Student Athletes Receive Stipends Past their Scholarships? Dylan Windom Arkansas State University Intercollegiate athletics has gained a massive amount of popularity over the past few decades. Student-athletes aren’t asking for millions of dollars, they are just asking for enough money to live off of. Television contracts, multi-million dollar coaches, and endorsements are the way to universities and coaches, so it is suitable to provide compensation for the student-athlete who makes these opportunities possible for each university. Proponents of compensating student-athletes for their participation in these revenue-generating sports have been named “pay-for-play” advocates (Haden, 2001, pp.674). “Pay-for-play” brings out the question whether student athletes should receive compensation beyond the tuition, room and board, and books or should they receive zero compensation. The pay-for-play system faces major obstacles such as employment status (workers’ compensation), any federal tax benefits, Title IX, antitrust under the Sherman Act. The first major obstacle that an athlete would face is attaining the employee status. In order for student-athletes to receive additional compensation for their participation in inter-collegiate athletics, they must be recognized as employees of the university (Haden, 2001, pp.674). To follow along with employment status, the pay-for-play advocates encounter additional obstacles in their quest to compensate the...

College Athletes Should Be Compensated

...College Athletes Should Be Compensated For many colleges and universities athletics programs are a major source of revenue for its institutions. These institutions rely on their athletes to keep the notoriety and popularity of their institutions name. Since, college’s athletes are supposed to be the best at the sports they play, why are they not being compensated? Some might say a student athlete’s scholarship for a free education is compensation enough. However, there are some that say the amount of money institutions make from its athletes is so great that student athletes should be given a kickback. Student athletes should be compensated for the time and performance they give to help their college and universities uphold their reputations. Certainly, both sides of this debate have made very compelling arguments in support of their views. There are those who believe that college athletes should be compensated somehow or be given a stipend for extra money to cover the costs or living that are not provided with their scholarships (Nocera No pg.). Most college scholarships fall on average about $3,500 short of the total cost of attending college each year (Nocera No pg.). Many student athletes come from low-income families and rely heavily on athletic scholarships to get them into a quality school (Burgett No pg.). Although student athletes are given a full scholarship to their school of choice these scholarships do not provide the money necessary for entertainment, travel expenses...

Pay to Play

...Pay to Play: Economic Impact of Paying College Athletes 1. Purpose of Research & Analysis On April 25, 2014, the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., granted Northwestern University's request to review the decision made by the regional office recognizing the school's football players as employees. In mid-April, Northwestern football players voted as a team on whether or not to unionize, but the votes will only be opened if the board ends up siding with the players, which may take at least a couple of months. Ultimately, the Northwestern football players are determining their fate through this secret ballot and their decision to form the first union amongst college athletes—a decision that has the ability to change the landscape of American college sports. If granted the right to unionize, the Northwestern football team will actually have the ability to bargain over their conditions and it is expected that this could ultimately lead to requesting salary compensation for their efforts. In light of these recent historic discussions, it is critical to analyze not only the ethical, but also the economic impact of such potential situations. My research paper has been structured to shed some light into the challenging and complicated discussions that continue to occur around this topic. Specifically, I have broken my research and analysis into three key topics. First, I explore whether or not there is an underlying issue with the current state, from an economic perspective...

Coleege Atheletes Pay Them Now

...Many revere the student athlete. Almost like a celebrity, their many fans cheer them on in a role that many have trained for most of their life. However, outside of a scholarship, which provides the necessities of a college education, such room, board, tuition, and books. The college athlete cannot receive any other compensation. Although a free education is a wonderful gift, whether it is from an Ivy League university or a small community junior college, one must question if it is truly compensatory enough for work the student does and even more importantly for the revenue, said student brings in. College athletes should receive compensation not only because of the large amount of revenue student athletes generate for the university but also for the familiarity and marketability, they bring to the universities brand. The main concept behind college athletes not receiving any money is an effort to keep the amateurism definitive. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has a set of regulations, which define what exactly an amateur athlete is. In fact, every student who plans to compete in NCAA related activities must register to receive certification ensuring the student is indeed an amateur. The website states that 180,000 student athletes apply for said certification and more than 90% instantly receive their certification (NCAA, 2012). One would think with such stringent guidelines that students would receive more than just a scholarship. Whereas, many think that...

These people feel that the promise of theireducation being paid for is enough for the college athletes. On theopposite side of the issue, people argue that the college athletegenerates enough income for the universities, and they feel that theuniversity owes the athletes a little more than a scholarship. Studentathletes should be given a small payment for their services to theuniversity, because they put a direct impact on the schools image andpromote the school in a positive way.
