Controle

...In: Computers and Technology Unit 6 Research Paper 1: Network Attached Storage UNIT 6 RESEARCH PAPER 1: NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE NT 1110 WAYNE HOVIS PART 1 What is a NAS device? A network-attached storage (NAS) device is a server that is dedicated to nothing more than file sharing. NAS does not provide any of the activities that a server in a server-centric system typically provides, such as email, authentication or file management. NAS allows more hard disk storage space to be added to a network that already utilizes servers without shutting them down for maintenance and upgrades. With a NAS device, storage is not an integral part of the server. Instead, in this storage-centric design, the server still handles all of the processing of data but a NAS device delivers the data to the user. A NAS device does not need to be located within the server but can exist anywhere in a LAN and can be made up of multiple networked NAS devices. What is the speed of the network adapter available on a NAS device? The speed is usually 1GB Ethernet connection but it can be changed to multiple Gb, 10Gb, fiber optic by adding a PCIe network card(s). It depends on the NAS device. Most newer ones will have Gigabit ethernet, very cheap or old ones may only be 100Mbit and high end ones may have 2 separate gigabit ethernet connections. What is the capacity range? Depending on the type and volume of content you plan to store, there's a choice of capacities...

...Cameron White Unit 6 Research Paper 1 What is a NAS device? A NAS (Network-Attached Storage) is a server that is dedicated to nothing more than file sharing. It’s usually a network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS usually has a speed of 1GB Ethernet connection but it can be changed to Gb, 10Gb, fiber optic by adding a PCIe network card. They usually have a capacity range from 0-Unlimitied. The capacity varies because you can always add on hardware drive controller cards. You can have a board that has six SATA ports that can allow 30 drives to be attached and 3TB drives are used in RAID 50, then there would be 72TB of storage. When using RAID there aren’t really any fault tolerance. Older models of RAID have been known to lose all storage if one or more drives fail. When using a NAS device there are management features available like using SSL to protect the web management interface to bare minimum, also support of protocols such as SSH for encryption of RSYNC data transfers. SMB’s with more than two dozen users will appreciate a proper management console from which users and permissions can be managed. SMB’s that have deployed Active Directory will be looking for a NAS that supports it as well. Some models can switch off when not in use to save power and you can always play with the settings. NAS can be really helpful and can defiantly be helpful with a family that all has there own computer. With NAS you can have photos and videos and share them/access...

...Storage). Network-attached storage (NAS) is a dedicated hard disk storage device that is set up with its own network address and provides file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. 2. NAS devices come in many varieties depending on if you build it yourself or purchase a vendor product. The speed is typically one gigabit Ethernet connection but this can be changed to multiple gigabit, 10 gigabit, fiber optic by adding a pci-e network card(s). Older parts can be used which may be limited to 10/100 megabit. If you need an exact answer for speed, simply look at the wiki on gigabit. The capacity range again varies; people have built 40 TB machines and other just have 2TB. With port replication and add-on hard drive controller cards there is hardly a limit on size. A board with 6 sata ports can be replicated (1 to 5 port) allowing for 30 drives to be attached, if 3TB drives were used in raid 50 that would be 72TB of storage. As far as fault tolerance, raid 50 is fairly stable if set up correctly, raid 10 has been touted as one of the best setups since more drives can fail at one time without data loss. All of those features can be used on typical NAS devices....

Granger Paper Co. Case

...Acc 327 Case No. 2 Spring 2012 It is January 20, 2012, and you are the senior auditor in charge of auditing the 2011 year-end financial statements for Granger Paper Company (GPC). GPC is a profitable company that has been in business for many years. It is primarily a manufacturing company that buys wood from timber growers and converts the wood into a variety of paper products. It is a publicly traded company with a reputation as a good corporate citizen. Although GPC has been audited many times in the past by external CPA firms, this is the first year your firm has conducted the audit. GPC’s total revenue for 2011 is $80 million. In examining the revenue for the year, you notice that $3 million of the revenue does not come from GPC’s primary operations (i.e., revenue from sales of paper goods). This $3 million in revenue is labeled as timber revenue in GPC’s books. This strikes you as odd because, generally, GPC buys timber. That is, timber is part of the cost of goods sold for GPC and, as such, is an expense. You ask GPC’s controller, Pat Smith, why GPC is recognizing timber revenue? Pat informs you that GPC began diversifying its operations a few years ago. A natural extension of its business seemed to be growing and selling timber. So, five years ago, GPC bought 10,000 acres of land in Alabama and Mississippi for purposes of growing timber. The land was purchased from a previous timber grower that had recently harvested its timber. Immediately after purchasing...

Rendell Company Case

...Rendell hired its first controller in 1980 to address this exact problem. Rendell had seven divisions, with each division responsible for the manufacturing and marketing of their line of products. A controller was assigned to each of the seven divisions, and they reported to the general manager of their respective division. Frank Bevins, Rendell’s corporate controller, was concerned about the organizational status of his divisional controllers, as they do not report directly to him. Consequently, the company was experiencing difficulties in implementing its modern control techniques due to the strained relationship between the corporate controller and the divisional controllers. Problem Identification The primary problem faced by Frank Bevins was that he felt he was not obtaining adequate information from the divisional controllers regarding the divisions’ budget and performance reporting. He suspected that it was due to the fact that the divisional controllers reported to their respective division’s general manager. The controllers’ primary loyalty was therefore to their division’s general manager, hence a biased report to the corporate controller. Bevins was facing a dilemma of whether or not Rendell should restructure its organization in such a way that would rectify this issue. Case Analysis The divisional controller’s task was to assist the general manager in budgeting and providing performance report. Although the divisional controllers adhered to the accounting...

...handle the stress that air controllers face every day on the job. I wouldn’t be able to face it right now of course, but if I was trained, why not? They wouldn’t allow just anyone to be able to be an air controller without the proper knowledge and education/training. If you are properly trained for this particular job then you know what you are up against and should have no problem in doing the job. Although I am sure that this job isn’t for everybody and I am not sure it would be for me. It is a lot of pressure and you have a lot of lives that you are responsible for. 2. I think the overall stress that air controllers are faced with everyday is the fact that they have so many people’s lives in their control. One minor setback or something so little, or any decision or mistake can cost a major tragedy. That would be my biggest worry if I were an air controller. 3. I don’t understand what Pete Rogers means by “almost like a mini convention of type A personalities” but I am guessing he means that it is a reunion where they can come together and share ideas. They all perform the same job so they understand each other as opposed to someone who is not an air controller.
