As I was looking for programs I found that the Gateway Foundation had a facility near my area in Aurora, IL. The facility is located on the campus of the Provina Medical center which is one of the area's most prominent hospitals. The address is 400 Mercy Lane Aurora, IL 60506 and the phone number I called was (630) 966-7400. The name of the person I spoke with was Nick Turner. Nick Turner is an outpatient counselor for the Gateway Foundation in the Aurora facility. The first question that I asked Nick was if he could give a brief history lesson about the company? He explained that the Gateway foundation is a non-for profit organization that is dedicated to helping people that are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. From the counselor I found out that the Gateway Foundation opened its first facility in 1968 in the Cook County area. The study examines the causative factors that push children on to the streets, their encounters and experiences in their attempts to cope with street life. The study used both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data was collected from 50 street children in eight areas in Kumasi where the street children are predominant. The study identified that children who live on the street adopt a range of survival strategies, both legal and/or illegal, to confront the challenges of urban street life. The study further identified that the plight of children arises not so much out of negative experiences they have gone through such as child abuse or child neglect but broadly to the absence of and inadequate programmes resulting from the low-priority placed on issues related to child welfare in the country generally.
