ABSTRACT

This project will serve as a research and report of corporate governance at American Express. The company, founded in 1850, is 124 years and is ranked #67 on Fortune’s list of Best Companies 2014 (Fortune, 2014). There are so many perks of working at American Express such as paid 28 day vacation, Hyatt legal services and educational assistance. After one year employees are able to get 6 weeks of paid vacation following the birth or adoption of a child.

Introduction

This paper will serve as a report on American Express, one of the best companies for employees in 2014. The corporate governance at American Express is highly professional and impressive this is why they are ranked #67th position in all over the world in 2014. This paper will represent how this well-oiled machine works.

Corporate Background

American Express founded in 1850 as a luxury delivery company. The US postal wasn’t reliable and insufficient at that time and there was a demand for reliable delivery services for valuable goods. The company started banking and traveling business in early 20th century, when they see more benefits. Finally, they revealed their first credit card and gold card in 1950’s. The company always focused on upscale customers with giving them privileges to their wealthy and famous customers, we can easily see their focus not on quantity but quality.

Products/Services

American Express’ products are simply variety of credit cards with different privileges and it’s an order from lower to higher limits depends on our credit worthiness;
Blue Cash Everyday Card, Amex EveryDay Credit Card, American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card, Platinum Card and Black American Express only for invited and celebrity customers. The company also remains their traveling and reservation services for its customers. They have travelers check and gift card services as well and so many more services for their high end customers such as; platinum and black AmEx card diner, fine hotel, luxury car reservation services.

Vision/Mission Statement

American Express would like to call values and culture instead of vision and mission. Customer commitment, quality, integrity, team work, good citizenship, a will to win, respects for people, personal accountability their highlighted values and represents their culture and behavior as a global company

According to Fortune.com’s research the company ranked#67th position in 2014. They have ranked#51st in 2013 which means they recessed from their position over the past year. American Express is in Financial Services, Banking and Credit services industry.

They have insurance agreement with Aetna International and American Express employees have great health benefits, it covers vision and dental insurance which is so rare in world-wide companies, only complaint about the insurance is high deductions. Most important benefit for employees seems like parental leave time. It has 12 weeks full paid or 24 weeks half paid options and really help families to maintain their life order to babies needs

American Express working with 3 credit rating agencies to rate their customer order to give them best service possible like most of the banks in the US. These are Equifax, TransUnion, Experian credit rating agencies.

Risks

According to Fitch ratings they have high risk of losing their customer to more traditional banks due to high interest rates. Fitch report also says, the company has lack of having long lasting relationship with their customer which ends up with losing their customer to traditional banks.

Corporate Citizenship

As we mentioned in vision/mission part of the paper they tend to be good citizen as a bank. That’s why they have charity events, they support art exhibit and make them happen they have fund for historic preservation.

Conclusion

The reason why I chose American Express is I have been banking with them more than a year and I am very satisfied as a customer and always impressed with their professional and bright outlook as we see on this paper this is not a coincidence. The most important thing about customer satisfaction is giving the best environment to their employees.
