The Cotton On story began in 1988, when a young eighteen year old, Nigel Austin, began selling acid wash denim jackets out of the boot of his car at markets in his home town of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Initially the Jackets did not sell well but when the price dropped they were an instant hit.In 1991 and the very first Cotton On store opened in Geelong.

In following years the Cotton On brand continues to thrive as it expands to all corners of Australia, as well as the first Cotton On Kids store opening in Knox City Shopping Centre in 2006. By 2007, Cotton On opened its first store in New Zealand, as well as the Cotton On Foundation being established.

Cotton continues to open stores overseas in countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong
