Book Review for Meditations from a Movable Chair

...Abstract Meditations from a Movable Chair consists of a series of non-fiction essays by Dubus that are detailed memoirs of his life. Just by reading the title, one can tell how the book describes the way that Dubus continued to write from his wheelchair after being “crippled” by his accident. Readers had the opportunity to experience this honest man’s life through his eyes. Being a handicapped man, everyday tasks became challenges, taking much longer to accomplish. Throughout all the hardships, Dubus had the perseverance to continue living his life and do what he loves; write.   Book Review Andre Dubus' essay collection Meditations from a Movable Chair, is not a book that I would have chosen off of a prodigious bookshelf to read on my own time. Dubus incorporated twenty-five immensely personal short stories into this book to prove how hard life can be. From the very title of the book, most of the essays explain his reflection on how the accident changed him emotionally, fundamentally, and physically. Position Having read Meditations from a Movable Chair, I was very fond of these essays and actually enjoyed the disorganization of the chapters because I have a penchant for putting pieces together. The great thing about short stories is that they are thorough and get right to the point. Dubus writes about themes that are relatable to ordinary people; some of the themes include: family, tolerance/acceptance, religion/faith, perseverance, tragedy, art, literature, commitment...

Reaction Paper

...San Mateo, Kristina Marie (.) Ent102 MANILA FAME Reaction Paper Last Sunday, me and my co-entrep students went to MANILA FAME which was held in SMX Convention Center. As I walk through those furniture and handcrafts, I was really amazed on what I saw. I was stunned and really delighted. To think that there`s so much things you can do in an object as long as you have wide imagination and creativity, you can design and even put up a very unique thing that can change the world`s perception in furniture and handicrafts. And in that object you created you can earn a lot of money. In just a simple chair, a very simple chair, you can earn 300,000, just like that. Seriously, it invites people to sit and appreciate the art and the couches with oversized pillows make you want to linger. Those seats look comfortable. The tables I saw are super cool. I also appreciate the bed, the unique clothes made of pineapple, the handicrafts. Very nice. And of course, who wouldn`t notice the chandeliers (can we call it that?) is awesome. The wires are not as noticeable as I thought they would be. I really like the use of the unique couches, how they match the designs. Such a great idea. There certainly is a lot to see. And, I think the large pillows (with the printed animal on it) are pretty. And the chairs, it reminds me of antique stores whose owners place objects on the chairs to discourage customers from sitting on them (usually with good reason). Upon seeing the designs of the chairs, I...

...courage and will to change and to be open for new possibilities and opportunities, as Sarah told Bethany that it could move people to do great things and can also provide a new perspective. It could also be considered as a life changer, as it can greatly influence individuals that have gone through several trials and problems. It can also empower us to be prudent; being persistent enough to do good things with faith in God towards other people, especially our loved ones. If compassion would only exist in everyone, there will be no more wars, no more hatred and pain in our hearts and our children will play, with freedom and happiness in their hearts. Motivation: Importance in Perseverance against Adversity Bethany’s passion was always surfing: from being little kids, when her mother was convinced that she and her best friend Alana were mermaids, up to...

Wave Era Research Paper

...!!!What Is A Wave Period? Have you ever tried surfing? In order to surf, we need waves. However, there are things that a surfer needs to consider when looking at waves. One of the things that surfers look at is the size of the wave. For more experienced surfers, they will most likely want to surf on waves with a high amplitude. Also, it won’t be any fun if a wave appears and disappears quickly. Surfers will want to ride waves that last long, or waves with a long cycle, and so they look at the wave period. The __wave period__ tells us how long it takes for a wave to complete its cycle, or we can say that it is the time it takes for two wave peaks to occur. The conventional symbol for wave period is ‘’T’’, and its standard unit is in ‘’seconds’’....

...in the 80´: when it comes to garments, all the major technical brand began to be available not only to the specialists, but also to the rest of the consumer population This created a big opportunity for all the mayor competitors alongside with Billabong, but also put pressure on them, since they were force to find a balance between two different direction, one leading to the basic market of surfers and the other to the secondary market of the emulator. This is a tricky combination, because, while the dedicate surfer is more interested in the utility of the garment, for the follower is more important to make a fashion statement. There is no doubt about the fact the consumer capitalism had an huge impact for the growing popularity of surfing garments and all the commodities related to it: equipment and clothing are not now only available in specialized store, they can now be found in K-mart, for example. In our opinion this has been an...

Soul Surfer

...Soul Surfer In the 1960s, the term “soul surfer” was used to describe a surfer who surfed for the pure pleasure of surfing. Though they may enter competitions, a soul surfer is more so motivated by a spiritual, compassionate, peaceful way of life. The movie, Soul Surfer is a film adaptation based on the 2004 autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on Board by American professional surfer, Bethany Hamilton. The main characters at the heart of the story are Bethany Hamilton who lives in Kauai, Hawaii with her parents Tom and Cheri, and two brothers, Noah and Timmy, who all happen to be surfers as well. But Bethany, along with her best friend, Alana Blanchard has a passion for the sport and work to become competitive professional surfers. Another character that plays a major role in Bethany’s life is her youth ministry leader, Sarah Hill. In the film, Bethany narrates and retells her story of how as young teenage girl, she lived and breathed surfing and being in the water and her dreams and goals of becoming a professional surfer. It’s an account of her life on how after losing her arm in a shark attack she had to adjust to life as a handicap and had to decide whether it was going to define her as handicap. Throughout the film, Bethany tries to find a way to recover her “soul” by looking to her Christian faiths and beliefs that somehow she felt were being tested. Media attention was brought to the family resulting of the shark attack...

These major changes, once started, took 15 month period of 6-12 week cycles. Before every implementing this project The city-government and its various agencies were in a blinded state of turmoil. They were have so many issues with technological communication that the only option was change! So change they made by implementing a single centralized IT group whose sole purpose was to bring the city-government out of the ashes. This of course meant saying farewell to the existing 14 management systems, saving costs in doing so anyway. The new system, the enterprise content management (ECM) system had to fill 3 major roles records, security, and finally communication. The ECM chosen blew its competitor away with a million dollar a year in potential savings. That and its ability to accommodate the cities...

...Gifts By Logan Tueller 1995 I have no memory of this gift. The day I was born, my mother gave me the best gift I still can’t begin to comprehend. She brought me into this world and for that reason, this is the best gift of my life. 1998 This is one of the earliest memories I remember. The day I received my best friend for years to come. My dear stuff animal lamb, which I consequently named Lamby. This present is among the most treasured I can remember and I still have that soft as tissue paper lamb in my room. 1999 Christmas is the best time for kids to receive the dream gift they have wanted all year. This year is when I got all my toy-like desires met. My dad and older sister always liked to play with my new things so I unwrapped everything and left all the toys in the box for five weeks and looked upon them with excitement and yet I had no desire to play with them. 2000 First remembered trip to Hawaii that I ever took. This trip I received my first skateboard which I had developed a newfound interest in since watching my cousins skateboard on their assorted ramps. I also learned how to surf on this trip which made me who I am today. 2002 At seven years old, nothing interests boys more than war and guns. This is the Christmas when I was given a Red Rider pellet gun and a tool belt so my life from then on consisted of breaking things and shooting things. 2005 I have been fishing before this time but my father and I packed up early and went to...

Firewire Surfboards

...FireWire Surfboards Firewire Surfboards was created in the year 2005 by a group of colleges who happen to be friends. They all wanted to make a new kind of surfboards for the average person that wanted to go out and enjoy the waves. Firewire makes the claim that its surfboards are stronger, lighter and more flexible than any of its based competition’s surfboards. In order to keep up with the competition Firewire decided to start making custom surfboards instead of just their usual or original sizes. Along with making custom surfboards Firewire is doing other things in order to stay ahead of their competition. Channel Islands surfboards seems to be the major competitor of Firewire surfboards. However, it's surfboards aren't price efficient from what I’ve read, and doesn’t seem to come close to offering the flexibility and maneuverability that Firewires does. Firewire competitors mostly uses time dated technology and production that is thought to be harmful to the environment. Most “surfers prefer their gear old school,” that’s from what I’ve gathered, and the companies that have been established for decades had the upper hand on supplying this demand of the surf market. It also didn’t help that many of the surfboard manufactures had signed professional surfers and thousands of loyal customers that felt the technology “represented a real threat to the entrenched surfboard” companies that they had grown accustomed to. Firewire’s entrepreneurial team should have...

Southern California Surfing

...Surfing on the California Coast Surfing traveled from Hawaii and arrived at the stretching coast of California over a hundred years ago. Since then, almost all characteristics of the sport including the style, the gears, the wave, the surfers, and even the industry have changed radically. The sport which was once not even known to more than a handful of people has traveled across the globe. Even though there are still several isolated and undiscovered, hundreds of surf spots are frequented by different types of surfers every day. There are numerous surf spots from northern to southern California, however, here is the list of our top five: Rincon, Santa Barbara Situated on the border of the Ventura and Santa Barbara County line, Rincon is divided into 3 breaks - Rivermouth, Indicators, and the Cove....
