An individual or organization engaging in advocacy typically volunteer to protect children’s rights which may be abridged or abused in a number of areas. (Weinzweig, 2004) A child advocate not only provides a child with a safe haven, they also provide a voice when the child is not loud enough. Child Advocacy services can usually be sought after through the help of a case manager. In Colorado, when a child is placed in foster care, a service that is provided through the state is case management. One of the services that case manager’s offers their clients when in foster care due to abusive situations is resources to child advocacy. Case managers not only find a child advocacy program for individuals in need, they ensure that the services provided are correct for that client. They want to make sure that the client is comfortable with the advocacy process. It is the job of the case manager to be the contact person between the foster family and advocacy program, because although they are dealing with children, some of the matters can be confidential. These numbers only represent the children to whom that are strong enough to tell someone and hope for some change. No one really knows how many children are abused throughout his or her life. This is such a huge epidemic today that it can be compared to an iceberg; small amount of the ice you see however, the larger portion is hidden. Most individuals know that the forms of abuse range from the medically neglected and physical abuse to abandonment and mental abuse. Typically, children will finally come forward after someone outside the family notices a change in the child’s demeanor or sees marks that do not appear to be from everyday playing. Training employees and volunteers on policies and procedures is important to keeping the integrity and competency of an organization. How an organization manages the logistics and how the community perceives them is a huge factor in the success and effectiveness of an organization. One of the community organizations that will partner with the new group is Hearts to Nourish Hope. This non-profit organization is extremely vigilant about their process of employment for at-risk youth. All students ages 14-18 must go through a stringent application process including an interview. Once in a position whether it is at the organization itself or community partners, students must fill out daily journals and self-reports on work and the procedures. Hearts to Nourish Hope has a great tracking system for how youth are doing in their jobs with employers’ daily evaluations. Though this is tedious, it allows for the organization to continually check on youth in a holistic manner. Because the summer employment is funded through a federal grant, youth are paid which in turn helps them manage their money and have real world experience. As we all can see, based on these statistics little to no money is being given to prevent and treating addictions. This is a serious problem. I believe that if more efforts were being made to educate people on prevention it would help to decrease drug use. It is not enough for people to tell individuals that drugs are bad, they need to see it for themselves. I believe this is why kids want to do drugs because an adult standing in front of them saying drugs are bad and that they shouldn’t do them isn’t enough. If anything it makes them want to rebel, because what does this person know about drugs. I think people need to see how addictions truly hurt individuals and their families. Prison is a temporary solution and it uses a lot of resources. There needs to be more effective things put into place, because making more laws is not going to help the problem.
