Creative Process in the Aircraft Troubleshooting World

In all my years in the Air Force nothing made me more excited than troubleshoot an aircraft weapons system malfunction. Discovering what caused the problem, where that particular problem was on the aircraft and coming up with the final solution gave me such pride in what I did on a daily basis. What was best was when I was working on the A-10A aircraft. This was not the high tech computer heavy aircraft in today’s Air Force. This was a “hard-wired” jet that had little to no digital capabilities. To troubleshoot these took time tracing faults through wires and reading wiring diagrams and schematics. I spend many times inside a Hardened Aircraft Shelter with a multi-meter and a book in front of me, checking for voltage and continuity in wires. It came natural to me and I never thought of the processes that I used to accomplish the troubleshooting. As I look back on these times, I was definitely using a creative process to fix these ailing aircraft, and it was very simple in the way things flowed.
Troubleshooting Defined
Basically troubleshooting is finding a way to fix a know problem. Webster Dictionary defines a troubleshooter as “a person skilled at solving or anticipating problems or difficulties” or “a skilled worker employed to locate trouble and make repairs in machinery and technical equipment” (Marriam-Webster). I have defined a troubleshooter as someone who knows how to get things fixed and thus a problem solver. Troubleshooters are called upon to do a task that many cannot perform; they use processes to solve problems many people cannot fathom. Does this make them smarter than others? The three steps to follow in refining your solutions are to working out the detail, finding imperfections and complications and making problems. Original Problem The original issue that I had a problem with was the ability to learn the new 787 Dreamliner in order to complete my statement of work in an efficient amount of time. The initial solution was to pair up with someone that was more knowledgeable in that particular area or system and learn it that way. Several reasons that I was not able to learn this airplane with the time frame given were not enough time, systems were more complex than what I was used to, and also there were too many mechanics that were picked over me to get that job to actually learn it. After looking at the solution that I had decided based upon my time frame, and talking it over with some co-workers I had to rethink my solutions to the problem. Initial Solutions Initial solutions that I seem fit that will benefit my time schedule would be to learn the airplane on my spare time. Playing with the airplane while no one was working was also an option, that way I can see which systems affects each other, and also how to navigate through the navigational computers.
