Executive Summary

As we begin our business venture at XYZ Company, technology plays an important part in our success. We must be able to provide an infrastructure that is robust enough to support our customers and employees. It must also be reliable, providing “always on” access. The challenge is being able to accomplish this using new technology at a cost that will not have a big impact to our capital spend.
Per other Partners requests, the following report has been created to address identify a piece of technology that can be used at XYZ Company. The requirements of this tool is that is must be relevant within the last five years, widely accepted in the IT industry, and implemented and supported at a low cost. The tool must show the ability to make a positive impact to our business areas (Marketing, Accounting, Sales, and Quality Assurance).

After extensive research, Virtualization has been recommended as the technology that meets the requirements stated above. In reviewing potential vendors, VMware is the recommended choice due to their market share and offerings. VMware provides significant savings in cost, increased application availability, and desktop management.

By moving to VMware, we reduce cost by not having to spend money on additional server hardware. Multiple applications can be installed to one machine, saving hardware costs. This in turn reduces our server footprint, reducing cost with space, power, cooling, and additional IT Staff to support the hardware. Research shows that these costs are reduced by 20-30%.

By increasing application availability, we provide a stronger online presence. We can now improve our uptime availability online, providing customers to visit our site 24x7, 365 days a year. VMware has the capability to proactively restart failed images, increasing server uptime. Applications can also be moved on the fly, adding additional capacity, and providing more availability as needed.

Using VMware to manage our desktop environment, we can quickly deploy are configurations to our staff. This gives us the ability to secure the environment and only allow approved and purchased software to be used. We will also be able to manage antivirus and patching at one location opposed to having to manage a rollout to many machines. From a support perspective, troubleshooting can be done remotely. This reduces the need for IT Staff to visit the employee’s machine, reducing overall IT expense.

It is recommended that we move forward with this recommendation and begin discussions with VMware to design a solution, where to host the environment, and define a training plan for our IT Support Staff.

Introduction

The main objective of this report is to identify a piece of technology that can be used at XYZ Company. The requirements of this tool is that is must be relevant within the last five years, widely accepted in the IT industry, and implemented and supported at a low cost.

The following pages will introduce the tool selected along with describing the benefits associated in moving to this technology. Industry research has been conducted for this report, and the results will be shown in this report along with the corresponding presentation.

In determining the criteria for the technology, several factors were taken into consideration. First, the technology must be cost effective. Since our business is new, we need to ensure our choice is cost effective and gives us a quick return on our investment. Second, the solution must be available. This means that we will rely on this technology to help us perform our jobs. We must make sure that it is always accessible with minimal downtime. Third, it must be able to handle our growth. We expect our company to grow by 30% in the next three years. This technology must have the ability to meet our growth needs while providing continued cost and availability expectations.

Once the requirements are discussed, the next steps are how we proceed in acquiring the technology solution. This will include setting up meetings with the vendor to discuss how their product will be designed to meet the needs of our company. We must also discuss how our IT Staff will be trained to support the new solution. The last step will be to review our options for where we should implement the solution. Discussions will need to take place on whether we would like to keep this technology in house or if we should look at a hosted environment.

In reviewing the requirements above against the available technology, virtualization is the direction that XYZ Company should take moving forward. VMware is the leader in server virtualization and will be reviewed in this report.

My role in the company is that of a partner in this business venture and my job is to ensure our technology fits our direction along with making sure it is relevant and up to date per industry standards. This report is for the other partners to review, provide feedback, and decide if we move forward with the recommendation.

Research Findings From extensive research, using a variety of relevant and credible resources, there are three issues that should be considered for implementing VMware: 1) Cost Savings; 2) Increased Availability, and 3) Desktop Management.
Cost Savings One of the benefits of VMware is from a cost perspective. In researching cost savings, three sites provided interesting information.
According to www.vmware.com, “Two out of three VMware customers surveyed reduced operating costs related to managing their VMware environment by at least 25% compared to a physical environment, and many achieved much greater savings.”
At www.vmwaregrid.com, they state that VMware improves server consumption from 5-15% to almost 80%. They also report that application costs are reduced by 20-30% because you can run multiple instances on one machine.
A case study was done by Dell Computer on the Gas Atacama Company in Chile.
According to www.dell.com, they realized a 30% savings in operating costs, 30% savings in energy costs, and 25% savings in rack space using VMware.
According to www.cio.com, people use a rule of thumb and place five or six VMs on a single server. This means that instead of having one application per server, you can place multiple applications on a single machine. This alleviates the need to purchase additional servers along with reducing environmental costs (housing, cooling, electrical, etc.).
Analysis: In reviewing the information, VMware provides cost savings on many fronts. We will save money on the purchasing of hardware by reducing the server footprint, reduce the space needed to house the machines, decrease the cost of buying additional application licenses, and shows that we are committed to the environment by using less energy to run our environment.
Increased availability The availability of our systems is a key component in building trust with our customers and employees. We only have one time to make a first impression, and if our systems become unavailable, we will not be given a second chance. Here is data on how VMware increases availability.
According to www.virtual-strategy.com, “At the foundation of each successful vSphere or Hyper-V implementation is networked storage or “shared storage” (i.e. SAN). It’s required to enable IT administrators to provision virtual machines and to move them between physical hosts for workload balancing and to restart unresponsive VMs from a functional host in the case of system failure which essentially makes “high availability” possible.”
According to www.cites.illinois.edu, “VMware's VMotion technology enables the live migration of running virtual machines. Virtual machines do not need to be shut down for the vast majority of physical server maintenance events or virtual-environment patching. The VMware infrastructure will detect physical server failures and automatically restart VMs on another host.” www.windowsitpro.com states the following, “Using the VirtualCenter Server you can move virtual server guests to different hosts in real time. This allows you to take down an active node in the middle of the day by VMotioning off all of the virtual server guests on that node to different nodes. Then you can add memory, replace a power supply, update the BIOS or perform other maintenance tasks on the host node without disrupting the users. The DRS package allows you to dynamically allocate host node resources and make sure you are effectively using existing hardware resources.”
Analysis: Availability and uptime are key factors to the success of any business. VMware provides increased uptime by being able to move application instances around as needed to necessary maintenance can be applied to hardware and software. The software also has intelligence to recognize system failures and can automate system restarts or initialize the movement of the application to working infrastructure immediately.
Desktop Management Desktop as a Service provides us the ability to create a more flexible and secure offering to our employees, driving out unnecessary software and hardware in the organization. From a security perspective www.searchsystemschannel.techtarget.com states, “Because the VM is abstracted and separate from the computer's hardware and other VMs, security is one of the major benefits of desktop virtualization. In many organizations, there is a natural tension between employees who want to have a desktop environment they can control and install applications on, and IT staff who would prefer that computers be locked down and kept safe from malware and attacks that might compromise company information.” By virtualizing clients, we will also see a reduction in support costs. According to http://slcval.blogspot.com, you can perform maintenance and troubleshoot user issues without engaging in expensive on-site visits or maintaining remote IT staff and infrastructure – reducing your overall desktop costs by 50%. Centralizing management also makes patching and maintenance much more streamlined. According to www.forbes.com, the centralized model of VDI allows IT administrators to make upgrades and patches to a core Windows OS image, and then replicate this image out to the company, instead of having to patch scores of individual machines.
Analysis: The use of VMware for desktop virtualization will provide us with many benefits. We will be able to centrally manage our software from an installation and patching perspective. By locking down our offerings, we will be able to limit the possibility of unauthorized software being installed to our machines. This reduces our liability and will also protect our sensitive data, which will now be kept on servers in the datacenter.
Recommendation
I recommend that we pursue VMware as our technology direction. In order to move forward with VMware, there are three things we need to initiate in order to ensure we have a smooth implementation.
1. Recommendation One: Work with VMware to analyze our data and provide a recommendation for implementation.
2. Recommendation Two: Identify where the Environment will be housed. Determine onsite vs. hosted solution.
3. Recommendation Three: Train our IT staff on VMware so they can properly deploy, support, and manage our solution.
Conclusion
In reviewing the information, the use of VMware at our company will provide many benefits. We will see considerable cost savings in hardware, environmental, and headcount needed to support our infrastructure. By increasing our availability, we reduce the risk of our systems being compromised. This leads to a better customer experience along with providing uptime for our employees to work at any time of the day. This solution is also easy to deploy with an ROI that can be realized within 12-18 months. By moving forward we will be able to utilize current technology to bring us up to speed quickly at a cost that is much less than a traditional infrastructure model. References

...​Cross cultural communication is very useful in the business world. But you must first learn to respect and understand the values of a foreign relationship. Building foreign relationships can be difficult due to language barriers and different beliefs. If we as Americans learn to focus on what we have in common with a person, rather than what we do not, stronger relationships could be built with foreigners; for there are many commonalities among people despite the language spoken. I have chosen to compare the culture of Nigerians and Americans. Nigerian culture has much in common with American culture. The things that I will focus on are: language, religion, family values, mannerisms, and economic relationships. In Nigeria, English is the official language. It is widely used for education, business transactions and for official purposes. English as a first language, however, remains an exclusive preserve of a small minority of the country's urban elite, and is not spoken at all in some rural areas. Many religions are followed in Nigeria. The constitution guarantees religious freedom. Christians predominantly live in the south of the country, whereas Muslims live predominantly in the north. Native religions in which people believe in deities, spirits and ancestor worship, are spread throughout the country. ...Different communication styles- refers to when across culture some words are use differently and have different meaning. Body language can also be interpreted differently and sometimes people from different cultures can be offended by it. I believe this is very important for a teacher to keep in mind. For example in Puerto Rico the word “Bicho” is not appropriate, but to us that means insect. A “bicho” bit me. Same word with two different meanings. My husband and I are from the same country in Central America, yet we tend to have miscommunication because some of his words mean something else to me. When we married we had many confrontations because of this miscommunication, body language that I would interpret as rude towards his wife. One day I decided to pay close attention on how he communicated with his siblings and parents, I started learning their ways and everything started changing. In some cultures when a person gets too close is very disrespectful. I came to this country when I was eight years old and I did not get a chance to learn about the customs and traditions of my country. When I went back in 2002 I was very friendly with the opposite sex, and talk to them openly I would give a kiss on their cheek to say hi, and very carefree.
