Mission:

In line with the Lasallian Business leaders code of ethics, the purpose of our group is to embody knowledge, moral values and sustainable development with the intention of addressing the needs of the Aetas community. Through the use of literacy medium in reading, writing and basic math.

Quote:
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day ; Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” (Maimonides ,1229)

2. Please list the primary population(s) served? (youth, seniors, children, homeless, etc.)

According to our source, the estimated population in the community is 500 which consists of 150 families with age brackets as follows: * Adult population: 30 years old and above * Youth population: 12 to 29 years old * Infant to child population: 1 month to 11 years old

Please see below graph for further breakdown:

Figure 1: Population Served 3. What community need would a service-learning class or student address? Indigenous people of the Philippines as we call the “Aetas”, are one of the oldest groups of inhabitants found in the province of Zambales and Luzon Island which were scattered in the mountainous regions not until Mount Pinatubo’s volcanic eruption. After the 1991 volcanic eruption, they were forced to move to the lowlands. There, however, they feel like newcomers, as it is now a different linguistic environment. Though Filipino was widely used as a medium for communication, the culture demands literacy.

In this project, we are to target the children of the Aeta community having poor and insufficient educational system at present. This leads us to providing them basic alternative learning in the form of reading, writing, and mathematics. As we believe that children are our key to a brighter future, we mandate ourselves to partake in developing the Aeta children by advocating education so that they work and think not only for themselves but for the benefit of their whole community.

Situated at the Central Luzon region where our Aeta community moved during the volcanic eruption in 1991, it is no wonder that Pampanga is where some of our fellow Katutubong Aytas live and built their own community. According to (source), Pampanga is comprised of 20 municipalities and one of which is the municipality of Porac (East of Mount Pinatubo) where illiteracy rate is at 7%.

4. How will the project specifically address this need? As future Lasallian Business Leaders, we will address the depleting number of literacy ratio in the Philippines particularly in Porac, Pampanga by imparting to the Aeta community some of the most important social values and literature that will enable them to change the way they think about life and business, beliefs and culture. We are driving to create greater opportunities for the Aeta community by extending to them practical methods in business and basic educational assistance.

5. List and describe the project objectives, related activities, and project outcomes.

Project Objectives * To connect young Inararo (Aetas) in the Municipality of Porac Pampanga with literacy supports and learning opportunities to promote the development of reading, writing, basic math, and thinking skills. * To make them understand the importance of literacy development and growth, both of which support success in school, livelihood, and in life. * To impart values of society by complying with the essence of cultural and ethical conduct.

Related Activities * Literacy Activities on Writing, Reading, and Basic Math * We will provide a classroom type of learning activity for the children.
We will have lesson plans, activity guides, and quality books (English and Tagalog) that children can use. * We will encourage interactive participation among the children thru creating positive atmosphere (introduction, ice breaker, etc.), questioning the audience, reward and recognition system. * We will hold team activities along with activities to engage parents and foster a home-school connection. * We will hold examinations for them to apply what they have learned throughout the program.

* Book Drive * We will be asking from family, friends, and colleagues, donations of their preloved books that can be used by the children.

* Recognition Day * We will hold a Recognition day as culmination of all their hard work and active participation during the program. It is also a day when we gather and celebrate the success of the event.

Project Outcomes * Children take their first steps toward learning to read and write to prepare them for their future. * Children can help spread literacy awareness across the community. * Children will enhance or learn the basic literacy skills such as: basic handwriting, reading, understanding and following directions, and critical thinking.

6. Is this project one time or ongoing? The actual project activity would be on-going, however we will do an ocular inspection in our target audience prior to the actual CSR activity. Moreover, we will continue to maintain constant communication with our contact person after the duration of the said activity to monitor the progression of self-education of the children in the Aetas community. As MBA student we must be the instrument of change in this society.

7. What are your proposed service dates and hours? The project will begin on February 25 to be followed by a continuous four-hour visit to the community on March 6, 13 and 20.
