Countee Cullen

...Countee Cullen 1. The metaphor of the dark tower is significant because it represents a foreshadowing of the slaves eventually rising up in the future, while the white people will fall apart. It could also be a representation of a connection that the slaves made to their future. They knew that even though the white people had all the power and control over them at that point in time, they knew that it wouldn’t be like this forever. 2. The last two lines represent the underlying message that the slaves are aware of, which is that their conditions and struggles will not always be this way. They know they will not always be slaves, and that some day they too will have their opportunity to rise up against the white people that treated them so poorly for the entirety of their existence. 3. The title of “Incident” is ironic because to the boy, the situation he experienced was something much greater than an incident, but rather consumed a great amount of his thought. Between May through December, the boy is completely consumed with what seemed to be a minor encounter between two children of different races. So to call it something so insignificant as “Incident”, when it was so much more than an incident to him, makes the title ironic. 4. After reading this poem, I realized that the influence you have and the way you act towards other people is much more important and effective on them often then you are aware of. The one memory that the boy remembers is an insulting...

6.04b Countee Cullen

...06.04B Countee Cullen 1. Explain the significance of the metaphor "dark tower." Cullen’s metaphor of a “ dark tower” is serves as a symbolism to showcase the struggle of African-Americans, and from the dark tower, he sees their struggles and those who oppresses them. The dark tower could also be seen as a means of escape, a means of someone of having the way out from the current situation which African-Americans were in. 2. Explain how the last two lines of the poem "From the Dark Tower" complete the message expressed in the first two lines. These lines “So in the dark we hid the heart that bleeds, And wait, and tend our agonizing needs” shows me the determination which Cullen saw in African-Americans. His determination for a change is evident in this sentence as he’s sure of an incoming event that will come which will change everything. It’s as if he’s saying subtlety ,soon, a message of hope for those that are going through agonizing pain, that their needs soon will be met. While reading the poem, I believed in Cullen’s words not just as assurance but as a promise, a promise that he’d sure keep. 3. Explain the irony of the title "Incident." As suggested by the title, the incident in the poem is completely downplayed by Cullen. The incident is so traumatizing to the narrator that he stills remembers every excruciating detail of it; such an incident wouldn’t linger on someone’s mind, if it wasn’t one that affected one very deeply. 4. Write your reaction...

Twilight Review

...by the fact that Twilight boasts easily some of the worst writing and editing I've ever seen. Let's not forget about the horrid VFX and pasty makeup, either. It's one of the cheesiest films of the year, and can definitely be put in the category of "so bad it's ALMOST good". Yes, I just invented that category. The 'allure' of the film appears to be the character played by Robert Pattinson, who ironically was previously known for his role in the Harry Potter series. Pattinson succeeded there and he more than succeeds again, as he more than fit the bill for what he needed to do with the character. Most actors would believe the only requirement of the character is to be good looking, but Pattinson takes it a step further and makes Edward Cullen very likable, trustworthy, and in the end, a good hero for the audience. Kristen Stewart is sort of the queen of not showing facial...

...WATER He was gone. Love, life, meaning…over. My life was torn apart just seconds after he tried convincing me that he was not the right one for me. His word felt like a hole that was punched right through my chest. My vampire boyfriend, Edward Cullen had left me. It all happened so quickly remembered the night before, the Cullens were celebrating my birthday, when one of the Cullen family’s most feared incident of happening happened to me, occurred. Jasper, Edward’s brother, almost killed me when he smelt the drop of blood that oozed out of a paper cut I received when I was opening a gift. And now, they were gone. He was gone. They had left me. Alone. Little did they know that they had left me, unprotected, from the red-haired vampire, Victoria, who was out to get me. It was months until I realized that the love of my life was gone…forever. My best friend, Jacob Black, was there for me when I was alone or whenever I felt very down. Soon the hole I had in my chest felt as if it was healing. It was very comforting to have Jacob around. We did so many activities together that made me keep my mind off Edward. Then, one day, when I was doing something reckless, I heard a voice. A familiar, beautiful voice, soft like velvet even though it was irate. It was his voice. Edward’s. My muscles locked in place, froze me where I stood. Was I hallucinating? Soon I found out that whenever I did anything reckless, Edward appeared in every situation. Jacob promised that he would take me...

...society. These two people came together no differently than any normal human beings get together in high school, with mutual interests, like their knowledge of biology and their taste in music. Twilight encourages abstinence until marriage, and although the final novel, Breaking Dawn, has some underlying sexual themes, they purely pertain to the plot and are not described in scenes, only referenced to. Still, the books are far cleaner than what’s found in other books written for the same age range, television, movies, and magazines. The relationship between Bella and Edward is based on mostly compassion instead of the physical relationship that is portrayed on television. The media argues that all Twilight readers are infatuated with Edward Cullen, and buff hard body Jacob, yet most of the readers of the Twilight saga are not unhealthily obsessed with the characters or actors portraying them. Celebrity fixation has always been a part of teen culture, and hasn’t every generation had a teen heartthrob, do we remember, Elvis, Shawn Cassidy, The Beetles, New Kids of the Block? Harry and Twilight

...There is a new war happening all over the world, but it is not world war three. It is a war that is waging between the fans of two extremely popular book series that have also made their way to the big screen and in to our homes. The fans of the Harry potter series and the fans of The Twilight Saga are feuding over which one is better. I have seen words thrown back and forth on social media sites such as facebook and twitter that you would think would belong to people arguing over some important political issue or something along those lines. Harry Potter and Twilight are two of the biggest selling franchises and should both be treated equally by the fans of either. Harry Potter is a seven book series written by author J.K. Rowling that takes place in Europe, in a magical fantasy version of today’s reality. The series targets older children and young adults, but has grown into a phenomenal fad that has fans from one to one hundred. The story follows a young boy, Harry Potter, throughout his years at a school for witchcraft and wizardry. The story line has ups and downs, twists and turns and details that bring the world of Harry Potter to life right in front of your eyes. The Twilight Saga is a four book series written by author Stephanie Meyer that takes place in Forks, Washington. This series targets a little older audience than Harry Potter does, reaching out to teenage readers and older. While the fan base for this series might not reach as young of a crowd, it definitely...
