The Infamous Cyberbullying in Cebuano Teenagers.
A month ago, my cousin introduced me to a website known as the ‘’Ask.fm’ which allows the user to get asked and post questions from anonymous users online. She seemed to be very excited about it. But unlike her I wasn’t really interested about the site because I chose to stick my nose with Twitter and Facebook. A week after, one of her friends sent me a friend request in facebook and before hitting the accept button, I took a peek at his timeline first. What really caught my attention are the screen captured pictures that her friends posted along with the caption “ this is the anonymous person behind the bashes’’ tagged along were the other people whom I’m pretty sure that were also bashed by the same basher since their comments apparently told so.. But what triggered my curiosity the most is the picture of the traced account of the basher. It looked familiar until I realized that it was my cousin’s. Eventually, I found out that using her anonymous account in Ask.fm, she asked her friends offensive questions and bullied them.
At the present situation, modern technology has made man’s lifestyle easier and has helped every citizen to solve their problems at their own standards into their day to day living. Technology has become the most essential part of life. It has always made the world to reach the top and to increase the developments. However, behind the convenience that it offers to society lays the aftertaste that technology leases to every individual. This disheartening matter has alarmed many people across the globe with its startling backlash as it targets teenagers using the internet. The controversy I am trying to bring about is the infamous “Cyberbullying”.
Bullying does not just take place in school or at any physical place. Unfortunately, there is what is known as cyber bullying. Although this happens with just the computer monitor or a device in front it is spreads like wild fire. Some may say that this is not even serious, but cyber bullying can damage a person emotionally and mentally for a long time. What is even worse is that, this can result to suicide.
Teenagers nowadays are very much ubiquitous in Facebook and other social networking sites. Productively, I myself am using it to communicate with my classmates about school tasks and to keep in touch with my friends. My facebook status and tweets in twitter has somehow become my way to share thoughts and views on practically everything. However, despite of the positive chain reaction from the internet; it is also a dangerous seat for cyber bullying
Sadly, Philippines is not excluded in this issue, most particularly,in Cebu. In fact, there have been several reports regarding about cyberbulling that appeared in the province.

Last August 13, 2014, a cybercrime was reported in the Cebu TV Station. A man and two high school teachers were investigated over allegations they took part in the cyber-bullying of a 17-year-old girl. Cebu City police intelligence branch head asserts that such crime could fall under online libel, depending on the outcome of a review of the affidavits the victim and the accused may file.
Moreover, the Department of Education has reported an increasing number of cases of bullying taking place in the networking sites. Countless cases of cyber bullying have also been detected to the teenagers around the province of Cebu notably to their academic and social life.
The unfortunate incident that bumped my cousin with Ask.fm is no longer unfamiliar. In fact there were many bullying related suicides where seven young people ended their lives because of social media bullying that occurred in the same website. And this could possibly happen in any websites and to any Cebuano teenagers.
Let us refuse to be a victim of this transgression. Let us help in shielding other teenagers in facing the harshness that the outside world bombards. Let us instill kindness and good citizenships wherever we go and let’s encourage our mates, friends, colleagues and community members to spread positive remarks and comments and to not be a bystander when they see any cyber bullying act. Let us fight against cyber bulling.
