Dear Mayor Ford,

We here at the Cycling Committee are working very hard to try and promote cycling within our school as well as making the people of Toronto more aware of the benefits of cycling. We feel that cycling is a great way to promote healthy active living, and it is a great way for citizens of Toronto to get together and be involved in their community. Studies have shown that pedestrian and cycling traffic are beneficial for a local economy. Customers who arrive at by foot or bike are more likely to spend more money in a neighbourhood’s shops than those who drive (torontoist.com, 2013). Cycling also brings mental and physical benefits to the community members because it is an easy and fun way to exercise. There are weekly events in Bogotá, Colombia called ciclovías and in these events, approximately 2 million people ride their bikes over 130 km of car-free streets. These ciclovías have been going on for over 10 years, and their success has incorporated other activities in the surrounding areas such as yoga lessons, aerobics and other types of entertainment (nytimes.com, 2008). Similar events have been held in Canada and have showed great success. These events were located in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Halifax and Vancouver. Ottawa has been holding their Sunday BikeDay Program since 1970. Their program closes 50 kilometers of roads every Sunday morning in the summer and has proven to be very successful. We would like to hold an event in Toronto similar to Bogotá's ciclovía or Ottawa's Sunday BikeDay Program. We would start with a small 5 kilometre ride from Ireland park to Dundas Square on a Sunday morning during the summer months. Riders can repeat the course as many times as they please. In Ireland park, there will be volunteers giving out maps, answering any questions, and providing refreshments for participants. At the end of the route, there will be live entertainment at the Yonge and Dundas square stage. We plan to close the streets from 9 am to 1 pm to provide a safe environment for cyclists, runners, and walkers. We feel that this event would be very beneficial for the city of Toronto and we hope that you take our proposal into consideration.

Sincerely,
Cycling Committee

Bicycles

...4/17/14 English 214 Lines, Vines and Bicycling Times The invention of the bicycle dates back all the way to 1817 when Baron von Drais invented a walking machine that would help him get around the royal gardens faster. Since then it was used as a means of transportation for many years, up until the use of cars started becoming more frequent. However, although cars are a good and refreshing invention that makes it quicker for us to move around, the use of a bicycle is much more convenient for the environment, for your wallet since you are saving money and for your health. An important component that affects our life is the environment which is why bike riding is beneficial to keeping the environment a good place for all of those who live in it. Riding your bicycle can help out with the environment since it doesn’t run on anything but your own physical power, while a car releases CO2 because it needs to run on gas. A car uses “[… ] fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel to transport people [it] is the second largest source of CO2 emissions, accounting for about 32% of total U.S. CO2 emissions” Since a bicycle doesn’t occupy gas like a car does, it doesn’t release any other toxins, like a car which, in addition to CO2  also release “…carbon dioxide (CO2 ), automobiles produce methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O)” The result of releases of methane to the environment makes it “more efficient at trapping radiation” which ultimately is deleterious to the environment, but can...

3 Day Nutrition Analysis

...What everyday changes, if any, might you make to increase the amount of energy expended in your day-to-day activities? To increase the total amount of energy expended in daily activities the time and amount of daily active exercises must be increased. The more vigorous the exercise performed is, the more energy is expended. All leisurely activities should be taken care of throughout the day, but the vigorous activities should be planned in order to incorporate all muscle groups and cardiovascular exercise. What types and amounts of exercise would work best for you? Among the exercises listed the ones that would work best for me would be walking, jogging, and playing sports. Also weightlifting and aerobic exercise would help to expend energy and burn calories. Riding a bike could also be an option as this could be enjoyed by the whole family. Can the activities be performed year-round? If not, can you suggest alternative activities and locations for inclement weather? Though bicycling cannot be performed at the home without a stationary bike, running and jogging can be done standing in place or on a treadmill. During favorable weather conditions these activities can be enjoyed outdoors. However, during inclement weather these outdoor activities can be put to a halt. During these times there are still many options. With personal gyms opening at an exponential rate, having the right equipment and an educated trainer has become an easy commodity to acquire. Also, many activities...

..."by absorbing the energy from the impact, buying extra time for the brain to slow down" (Macyko1). Bicycle riders need to wear helmets to protect their brains from injury, yet unfortunately the public is simply not aware of this need and many people will continue to die or be seriously injured unless something is done. Bicycle helmets save lives and should be required by Arizona State law for riders of all ages. Opponents feel that bicycle helmet laws are too strict and are misdirected. Principally, they feel that helmet laws do not prevent accidents and point out the fact that "motor vehicles are involved in 90-92% of bicyclist deaths" (BHSI/Compendium 4). Creating awareness among drivers by lowering their speeds would create a safer cycling environment. Furthermore, opponents of helmet laws believe that "requiring motorists to wear helmets will save more lives" (Convissor 1) since statistics show the likelihood of fatality while riding in passenger cars is nearly double that of bicycling (Bicycle 15). They are also concerned for the overall popularity of their sport when helmet laws go into effect. After helmet laws went into effect in Australia, "surveys in Sydney found the helmet law reduced...

...Current Marketing Situation The primary target market for UScoot is college students enrolled at Ole Miss. Parking on campus is getting worse and worse, and the situation is opening up a very large market for alternate transportation. Ole Miss is closing in on 20,000 students, and the university plans to continually increase enrollment, which will continually increase the size of UScoot’s target market. A secondary market for Uscoot will be campus employees. There are more than 2,500 Ole Miss employees, many of whom are searching for alternate transportation just as the students are, and as student enrollment rises, Ole Miss will have to employ even more people, and this will increase the size of the secondary market as well. Obviously, UScoot will available to anyone who wants to use the service, but the biggest portion of the business will definitely be centered around Ole Miss students. There are 38,000 residents in the city of Oxford, and these 38,000 residents represent the total market for UScoot. The size of the target market is between 15,000 and 20,000, which represents all students enrolled at the university. UScoot will only need to capture about 1% of this market to be profitable. It is not at all unreasonable to believe that UScoot can achieve this number of customers very quickly, and the potential for growth past that number is excellent as well. Enrollment will continue to rise, and the popularity of UScoot is bound to increase as more and more people learn...

Bike Lanes

...Lafayette Bike Lane Dangers and Restrictions Home to the University of Louisiana, Lafayette is one of the biggest college towns in Louisiana. Everyone knows that a majority of college students are poor. Having to pay for food, gas, bills, rent, and school all for the first time it is hard for students to keep up. Many students choose to ride their bike to school or even to run everyday errands. Lafayette has a big problem with biking accidents due to a lack of bike lanes around town. Being a college town we are very far behind on being bicycle friendly. We need to add more bicycle lanes around town, add barriers between the cars and bicycles, and spread bicycle awareness. Biking around Lafayette can unfortunately be very dangerous. As of right now there are only two main roads in Lafayette that have a bike lane. Saint Marry Street and Johnston Street and on those two roads the bike lane does not even span the whole road and instead just little parts of the road. When there are not bike lanes on roads, bikers are forced to ride in the motor vehicle lane obeying the same laws as a large car or truck. This can cause many problems to both cars and bicycle riders. Even the fanciest race bicycles cannot keep up with the 45-mile per hour speed limit on most Lafayette roads. When there are no bike lanes, bikes are expected to ride in the regular lane and obey regular traffic laws. This causes a problem due to the amount of vehicles that pile up behind the slow moving bicycle....

Traffic Jam

...With the increasingly rapid economic globalization and urbanization, more problems are brought to our attention. One of them is traffic jams. The reasons can be listed as follows .For one thing,it’s cheaper to buy a car than a few years ago.In previous years,a car was a luxury that Chinese families cannot afford, but cars are now becoming more accessible to the common people because of the reduction of the price. Therefore we can see so many cars driving on the road. For another reason, with the people’s needs for transport facilities increasing substantially , the road network is far from rational.Stimulated by high demand , the number of private cars has increased at an average annual rate of over 30 percent . Therefore , restricted road can’t meet the requirement of the increasing cars. Although traffic jams has brought inconvenience to us,it seems that people are not prepared to give up their cars and use other forms of transport. Here are a variety of reasons for it.First, owning a car is a metaphor of one’s status.Generally, a man who have a car may be richer than a man who goes by bus.Second, car is more express compared with bus or bicycle. In a survey conducted by a well-known magazine,it takes us one hour to go to your destination by bus. While you may save half an hour if you have a car. Then, how should we solve this problem? Here are some suggestions, which may be of some help. One way is to call upon common people to use bicycle in place of car, which can not only reduce...

Community Recreation

...Community and Recreation: Community Recreation Community The Merriam- Webster (2012) defines community as a unified body of individuals with common interests living in a particular area. A community is also a local grouping within which people carry out a full round of life activities. Although families or other groups can sometimes be relatively self-sufficient, most of them do not live in isolation. For many reasons, ranging from economic interdependence to shared cultural values, families and other groups normally join together to form communities. The community, rather than the family, becomes the social setting for most everyday economic, political, religious, educational, recreational and similar activities. As communities become larger and more complex, other types of organizations are often established within the community to perform these various functions. Thus, a community is a type of social organization that is territorially located and provides the setting for dealing with most of the needs and problems of daily living. Communities vary widely in size and complexity. Recreation McLean and Hurd., (2011) defines recreation as a network of public agencies that provide such facilities as parks, playgrounds, aquatic centers, sports fields, and community centers in thousand of cities, towns, and countries. Recreation is also defined as any activity performed during one’s leisure or free time. Recreation is very essential element of human biology...

Mogg NUR/405 June 11, 2012 Kim Hall Persuasive Letter Dear Mr. Supervisor: My name is Deborah Mogg and I am a Registered Nurse and a student at University of Phoenix in the RN-BSN program. I am writing this letter to you as the Supervisor of the Charter Township of Waterford to bring forward an issue that I feel needs attention in our township. I recently completed a Windshield Survey of my immediate community of Watkins Lake Estates and I have lived in Waterford for sixteen years. During this time I have noted the lack of adequate right-of-ways for both pedestrians and bicyclists. I also noted the alarming number of overweight and obese adults and children in the community. I’m sure you are aware of the exploding epidemic involving obesity and the increase of chronic disease conditions related to obesity including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). The effects of obesity and poor nutritional choices are well-documented and reported in every form of media available today. You may not be aware that the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2011-2020 as the Decade for of Action for Road Safety, with the stated goal to reduce road fatalities around the globe utilizing efforts at the regional, national, and global levels (“UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020”, n.d.). I think these two can be put together to promote awareness and a healthier lifestyle for our community...
