An early year practitioner is responsible for the well-being of the child at the setting and there are several ways in which they can meet children’s individual dietary requirements and preferences depending on the setting in which they work.
Working with parents:
The starting point for meeting children’s individual dietary requirement is to work with parents. In our setting before a child starts school the parents are required to fill in an “all about me” form which states any special requests and requirements of the child. Any allergies are mentioned on it so that the practitioner is aware about the child even before he/she joins in. The teacher also greets and welcomes each parent-child at drop off and makes note of any special request for the day. …show more content…
This kind of practice requires to pay extra attention to each child is given the type of food that they need. When preparing food for children with allergies, practitioner should make sure that there is no cross contamination and separate bowls and cutleries are used.
In our setting we do not prepare snack for every child unless snack is provided by the parent and we need to mix a specific amount of warm milk or water.
We do stock Weetabix and fresh milk and crackers to provide to children in case they accidently spill or experience spoilage or any other emergency. The parents are called and permission is seeked before giving any food to their children.
Preparation of babies feed:
When making babies feed, the manufacturer instructions are followed unless specified by the parents. Highest standard of hygiene is maintained. (Use of gloves, sterilized bottles, fresh clean utensils and water, etc.)
