There are three key points that are evident throughout the piece: 1. The speaker believes the his lover should be able to live forever although death occurs naturally; 2. His lover believes his attempts are all in vain and he cannot prevent life and time to metaphorically wipe her away; 3. The sonnet presents a theme that provides two paradoxical perspectives, one just as valid as the other. The setting of this sonnet is at a beach where the speaker is writing his lover’s name on the sand. His writing is washed away by the tide so he wrote it again yet his writings still suffered the same fate. In the sonnet, the tide/water is personified as a provider of pain to the speaker. The speaker’s wife steps in telling the speaker that all his actions are in vain since he cannot stop the tide from rushing in. Metaphorically speaking, the tide represents death that sweeps in continuously upon life and the act of the speaker’s lover stepping in simply shows that she believes that all the speaker’s actions are in vain for he cannot stop death from taking her from him and from time fading out her name. In the last decades there have been a lot of studies documenting the impact of psychological traits on the decisions made by managers. The call center was in charge of both incoming and outgoing calls, for those that needed questions answered regarding Medicare recipients, for example the closes doctor’s offices. As Automated Health Services won more and more contracts with different government programs for different states, the call center expanded. They decided they needed to hire more customer service representatives bilingual in Spanish. Several were hired in the next month. It did not take long before we noticed the ratio of bilingual representatives to callers. Most, spent the day speaking English with very little translation needed. The director of human resources had me investigate the situation. I was to determine why we had a need for bilingual representatives, more specifically Spanish representatives if the call mass was not evening out. I realized that the manager that had made this decision had based it upon two behavioral heuristics. She first chose Spanish because of how many employees of Spanish ethnicity worked there. There are clear differences between the two types of thinking and when we are dealing with system 1 by itself we tend to be dealing with situations where we need to be fast and quick on our feet to come up the answers or reactions that we need. System 1 is defined as “operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control” (Kahneman, 2008). It is because Daniel Quinn has written "My Ishmael" in such a beautiful way that what he's thinking comes across to you like as though you're having a conversation in person with him. He uses a talking Gorilla as a means to convey his points of view on how the world is in a degenerative mode and though I felt this strange at first, it became clear later as to why he used a Gorilla in the first place. The Gorilla here represents nature's voice and is a reminder that we need to look for ways to communicate with nature, first hand. This was the first eye opening aspect from the author. The second was the author's penchant for coming up with brilliant stories to derive and communicate his point to the reader. Instead of driving in his philosophies by pure theory would have been boring and heavy, but the author uses wonderful and thought provoking stories to do the same, so effectively. The first was the simple concept of food kept under lock and key. This is a practice that comes so naturally to us, but he brings out why this is a very unnatural way of things.
