We live in a world full of rules, regulations, policies, laws and other standards. Chaos would become us if we did not possess order. Simply put, business rules are the laws, if you will, that govern an organization day to day operations. In database management systems, these rules direct users how to manipulate the database management system. However, business rules in general, are necessary for standardizing an organizations day to day operations with any functioning part of the organization (2007). Business rules are what shape the end results of the process they regulate. For example, if you needed a new social security card the social security administration has a business rule that you must have documentation with your birthdate on it by showing either a birth certificate, hospital record, or passport (“Social Security Number and Card”). That is one simple example of business rule, but there are many others that range from very minute to the extremely intricate, all of which are vital to a business’s functionality.
Business rules are developed by an organizations leadership and used to create standard operating procedures (SOP), and technical manuals (2007). Managers help create business rules, and help to ensure conformity within their realm of influence. When dealing with information technology systems, like database management systems, the developers rely on precise business rules to grasp a solid understanding of what the organization needs (2007). It is important for the management team to develop business rules and train their entire organization to follow them in order to minimize confusion and maximize consistency. A business rule affecting database users would state how to go about accessing, creating, or modifying entries in a clearly defined manner.
