The Author David Laskin shares an informing and inspiring book that is an unforgettable true story of the Great War called “The Long Way Home: An American Journey from Ellis Island to the Great War” who shows the track downs of the lives of twelve men who were born in Europe who came to the United States seeking for freedom and many opportunities and become Americans by serving in the World War I. “ This is the story of twelve immigrants from Europe who served in the American armed forces during World War I. Of the humblest origins, these men and their families came to this country at the turn of the last century in search of freedom and opportunity” (Laskin, 2010, xi). Pierro was born in Forenza, Italy, and emigrated with a cousin in 1913 to the United States to have a job to earn money “The boys understood that someday they’d go to America with their father too earn money too..” (Laskin, 2010, 10). Not only that but because Pierro had killed his neighbor’s dog and was told that the owner suspected it was him and their could be trouble. “ The owner found the dog’s body and was enraged; word got out that he suspected the Pierro boy. There could be trouble-...” (Laskin, 2010, 12). The differences of Meyer’s and Pierro’s voyages was that Meyer “was lucky to have ended up on the world’s fastest ship. For most immigrants, the voyage across the Atlantic was a week or more..” (Laskin, 2010, 32). For Pierro and his cousin they had “ trudge through Ellis Island in the company of hundreds of other southern Italians..” (Laskin, 2010, 41). When Meyer arrived to New York City he worked as a hauler and plumber in New York City because it was a steady job but received decent amount of money. Also, Meyer had “went to work in the scrap metal business, because that’s what he knew” (Laskin, 2010, 51).
