The Haitian people use a secret commission to govern social deviance by using poison to place people in a state of living dead whereby, a funeral actually takes place for the drugged individual including a proper burial. Even though somebody died at the end of both stories, their deaths were different. In the story “The Flowers the main character was Myop, and in the story “A Rose for Emily” the main character was Emily. Myop was only ten at the time; she was an innocent little girl. In the book, he uses the real life individual, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, also known as Carlos the Jackal, a Venezuelan born terrorist who was capture after he killed an informant to the French government as well as two intelligence officers. The Jackal, as recent as 1975, participated in the planning of an attack on the headquarters of OPEC in Vienna, Austria. He then led a team to carrying out the attack, which led to the deaths of three people (a policeman, an OPEC employee and a member of the Libyan delegation) and the taking of 60 hostages. This inclusion of the Jackal is the biggest difference between the novel and movie. Universal Studios released their version of the book and they were counting on it being a blockbuster hit movie starring, Matt Damon as Bourne. The movie was well received and fans quickly became fans of the Bourne trilogy as they anticipated the next movie release date. But soon after the premiere, the Ludlum devoted began to turn on the movie blaming the differences between the novel and the movie, how could they mess with the beginning of the trilogy so unashamedly. ...have chosen both speak of endings and changes. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” describes a sunrise and the beauty of it and how that beauty fades as the sun continues to rise. In “I Used to Live Here Once” the main character is remembering her childhood home and in the story visits the home and describes the changes. I choose these pieces because they are both about endings and change and use symbolism to describe the changes. These pieces both show the change in a very detailed way even though one is a poem and the other a story. In comparison they may not look the same but when you read the words in both you can imagine what is being seen and feel that you can see it fade, as nothing lasts forever. The room had no windows, so the smell of gun oil filled my senses at least eight hours each day. It clung to my clothes like smoke, and like a smoker’s cigarettes, it became my smell. A miserable scene is set with grey weather, and Achebe uses alliteration in the phrase 'drizzle of one despondent dawn' to emphasise the depressing atmosphere. There is no sign of sun at the start of the day, as the phrase 'unstirred by harbingers of sunbreak' tells us (harbinger meaning a sign or announcer). A pair of vultures are sitting together on the branch of a tree. Achebe uses both alliteration and metaphor in describing the branch as a 'broken bone', and the tree is dead. This reinforces the bleakness of the scene and reminds us that vultures are in the habit of feeding on dead creatures. The first suggestion of gentleness comes when Achebe tells us that the male vulture is 'nestled close to his mate', conveying the feeling that they are fond of each other's company. The description of the male vulture, however, is hardly flattering: 'his smooth / bashed-in head, a pebble / on a stem rooted in / a dump of gross / feathers'. The metaphor of the pebble is appropriate, as the vulture's head is indeed small in comparison to its body, and the adjectives 'dump' and 'gross' emphasise how ugly the bird is. Yet his head is 'inclined affectionately to hers', so the attraction between the pair of vultures is clear to see.
